coconutbunny 121 October 19, 2012 Share October 19, 2012 Sup brothers and mamasitas I've decided to pick up on music and really wanted to get into Piano (I use to always ask my mother when I was a filly for piano lessons but instead she put me into damn rugby -.-) I'm just asking for anypony who plays this wonderful instrument to share their experiences, how long did it take you to master and did you enjoy the process? How much commitment is needed and such. I'm really intrigued and can't wait to start learning how to play Thanks in advance! One of the songs I want to play once I get a hang on things
Mephala 2,635 October 19, 2012 Share October 19, 2012 Piano is hard to play at the start but once you get into it, it's really easy. I'm still technically Grade 4 in Conservatory, but I play Grade 7 and 8 songs without much difficulty. You just have to stay motivated. As with any instrument, it's gonna be irritating at first. Just pick something you really wanna play and go for it, no matter the level of difficulty. Also, learn your scales-major and minor melodic/harmonic-and ALWAYS PLAY WITH YOUR LEFT HAND. NEVER start a piece just with your right. Good luck!~
Titan Rising 2,156 October 19, 2012 Share October 19, 2012 (edited) My advice is to memorize which notes are which, maybe get a book of scales and arpeggios to practice a bit a few times a day, and then choose the hardest song you can find (that you actually want to play) and keep practicing until you've memorized it. It will take a while but you will learn a lot, and your hands will learn to work together The instrument takes a lot of dedication and it never really becomes easy, it's all about continuing to challenge yourself. That's to say you could practice your whole life but there will still be chords and phrases that may be difficult for you, or sheet music that's hard to play and read. There is a large learning curve basically. I'm not great at reading sheet music; I am fairly good at playing, but I'm definitely not a master. I can tackle pretty much anything given a couple weeks. It took a long time, something like 7-8 years I believe, but I only really began getting good when I started playing the kind of music I wanted to and consistently challenged myself Edited October 19, 2012 by Hollowshield
Blitz 127 October 19, 2012 Share October 19, 2012 Well, I started learning a month ago, and what's really helped me is remembering the easy notes (like C on the thumb, E on the middle finger, and G on the pinkie) and then using those to figure out the other notes from there. LightRaider 148 October 19, 2012 Share October 19, 2012 Heads up: you never "master the piano". I've been playing for 7 years, and I still learn alot of stuff. (every note sharped? that really threw me for a loop lol). First of all, you should learn the names of the notes (A-G), then learn how to read sheet music. Getting to play a song perfectly is practice, practice, practice. I never knew how being forced to play the piano would pay off so much. Are you taking lessons from somebody? If not, its going to take alot of commitment to learn by yourself.
