An idea I'd like to propose

Here's the thing. This is something that has been in my mind for a little while now. I see all the time people that don't know that a ponycon will happen close to them or that can't find any bronies near them from their same countries IRL or even online. So, before I had posted 2 threads with two different links.

https://docs.google.com/spreadsheet/ccc?key=0Atwa0sRxZuyAdE16RWZUdW5pdFZrbkxJUHh0d3R6S1E#gid=0

https://docs.google.com/spreadsheet/ccc?key=0AkqRuvcSSOaedHYzWFpsYm9vZzlSMzVNcUU2aDhURUE#gid=0

The first contains a lot of the Facebook brony groups created around the world, and the second indicates all the ponycons that will be done. So...

I don't think a whole section for it would be wise or easy, but I dunno... my wonder is: "Is there a way to have this things somehow on show for people to see so they can look out for these?" Because, suppose there comes a brony from...Poland. The Polish Facebook group has more than 3000 members AND will get a ponycon next year! If a brony from there was none the wiser and wanted to meet/know others and go to a ponycon, but never it occurs to him/her to look in Google for example, he/she might be missing on a lot. Plus, I know there's an calendar for events, but I figured that any con, ponycons included, require some good planification. Maybe even months for them (like saving money to buy stuff, trips, hotels, etc). So I'd think that people being able to see if there's a ponycon where they are early enough, they could have a better chance of going (plus the "Acknowledging the existance" of a ponycon close to him/her).

Maybe something small. Like the size of the calendar in the main page or something like that, one having a title like "Looking for ponycons close to you? Look no more!" and "Looking for bronies online from where you live? Right this way!". I don't have much of an idea. But I just wanted to propose this to see if it was able to happen. I always try and help people who really want to know bronies from their countries and/or go to ponycons because I always see people have no idea, for all they know, there's a HUGE brony community already formed, or a ponycon around the corner from them. So...yeah...I hope I got the idea correctly.

Unfortunately, however a great idea it is, we'd have to get Hasbro's (and Studio B's) permission. And I'm not sure that they totally approve of the fandom in the first place.

Er...how in the world would we need to get permission from Hasbro and DHX? I'm not talking about making a pony convention. Just letting people know where there will be one, and also if the region one lives in has a Facebook brony page. That's it. Why would we need Hasbro's and DHX's permission for that?Posted Image

Arcanel, I understand your basic idea here is to create a database of pony conventions and Facebook groups, is that right?

I highly approve of the idea, as it could be a great way to add some static content to MLP Forums that's useful as a general brony resource... in turn, people may show up here and even register to help establish a greater online footprint for their local brony communities.

What I'm actually a bit indecisive on is whether such a resource would be better off as part of MLP Forums or as a dedicated site all its own. I can definitely see some appeal in having a single, simple site to visit in your browser that is a list of every pony convention on the planet.

Putting it here on MLP Forums, however, would make it easier to expose the resource to our existing community - and perhaps broaden our perspectives for making it a wiki-like resource that anyone can contribute to.

We have a great piece of software called IP.Content that's perfect for this sort of thing, and is really customizable (IP.Content is what currently sits behind our FAQ and the RP Character Database).

Putting such a resource together right on MLP Forums could potentially attract a lot of attention and possibly boost our registrations, not to mention the opportunity to tie it in really closely with our existing content (ie. adding conventions to the calendar and stuff). On the other hand, dedicated sites have a certain charm to them that established ones don't, at the expense of facing the challenge of building traffic and gaining attention in the first place.

Sorry to say this, but... dream on. Sorry, Arcanel. Posted Image

I'm pretty sure we don't need Hasbro's permission to compile a list of pony stuff.

More or less using the links I posted before, yeah, I think that is the main idea...and I completely understand.

For the main part, I made this, so people could find their brony comrades out there, instead of just leaving there wondering "Is there a brony close to me?". And as a plus, it did cross my mind that it could boost the forum's traffic by a lot (which, should it happen, makes me wonder if a huge traffic income won't come, effectively killing you and the mods, but that'd be underestimating you guys.Posted Image ).

As for the site in itself.....well...why not do both? Except the site would be more complete, adding any brony meetups as well. While that could be a tiring job for everyone who participates looking around, this goes mainly to the countries and regions where meetups don't happen as commonly as, say, USA. Plus, looking for meetups could prove already too much for what the site could handle on it's own (or so I think. Forgive my lack of knowledge, but I really know next to nothing about techno stuffPosted Image ). I would probably not be able to do the extra site. I'd have to ask around and see what happens, using the information from the spreadsheets, and whatever they don't have, look around in Google. However, maybe you could add the separate section or whatever you could have planned, and also have an ad or something like that on the other site so that people who watch, can see the huge "MLPFORUMS" ad, and with any luck get interested, kind of like making a symbiotic relationship, or something similar.

If one would have to choose between though, I think I'd go with the choice that helps the forums, for the sake of helping it grow.Posted Image Plus, in the meanwhile, another one thinks of gathering the site which could be handled around elsewhere, but with sections already implemented, it would still bring more people around here.

If both could be done, here's what I think it could do. The section gets implemented here, and then another team from wherever (like I said, I would totally go and do it myself, but me and tech things don't go hand in handPosted Image )   (maybe one could make a thread about this?), goes and makes ther site, and we submit it to Equestria Daily and other news or media sites. In theory, they should get interested enough to get it at least on a post of it's own (or if not enough, on EQD's Nightly Roundups), which would prolly lead people to the site. If you can arrange to have co-op somehow with MLPForums, both parties could be benefitiated.

I'll leave the final say to you though, of course. Whatever you say will be fine by me.Posted Image

OK. Sorry, I thought she meant by showing it on the show. Now I feel like an idiot. Sorry.

Not a problem!Posted Image However, the idea of making a ponycon out of members from MLPForums, considering we have enough for that, is such an interesting idea I would like to see it come to fruition some day we could hope for.Posted Image

No Facebook group DOES NOT mean no brony group ever my friend. Look and you shall receive.
