Just a few theories........

Ok, so my sis was watching G1 my little pony (not me I can't stand the older generations) and I noticed some strange similarities........

 

 

Changelings = Flutter ponies

Why: They both have insect wings. It has been stated that flutter ponies feed off of love.(don't ask me where, I really don't remember) The flutter ponies might have been able to use the love and friendship they lived off of to make the place the live (probably what is now the Equestria badlands) My guess is, when the normal ponies left because of Discord, they no longer had a means of making the land around them pleasant. Discord also might have been the reason they look evil. If the ponies that had lived in the area never told anypony else about the flutter ponies, then even Celestia wouldn't have known about them. Probably some time later, somepony discovered the flutter ponies in their evil form, and assumed that they had always been that way, not knowing that they could change them back.

Crystal empire = Crystal dessert

Why: Well, those Windigos had to go somewhere, why not up there?

Crystal ponies = Twinkle eyed ponies

Why: The twinkle eyed ponies may have left where they were before and made a new empire.

Elements of harmony = princess ponies

Why: There's six elements of harmony, and there are six princess ponies. The princess ponies have wands, no reason why when they used them they weren't in the form of wands.

However, the Desert part... Don't get me wrong, but they don't look similar in my eyes. Sure, they coined the name off it, but it looks completely different. Desert - Snow. HUGE Castle - Pointy thing. It didn't make much sense after seeing that.

A lot of stuff from the old shows made it into G4. Lauren Foust has said she was a fan of the older ponies, so it makes since that she would use some of what she enjoyed about them. And I'm sure that plenty of the people working on the show where fans as well.

Ha i've made these connections before i used to watch gen 1,2, and even 3 and still love them to this day, without them we wouldn't have gen 4. the changelings and flutter ponies do have so many similarities, its crazy how they can rehash most of this and sell it as something new and something better i love all the old references the have on the show, its real nestalgic.

oh and the Pointy thing in the crystal empire is a castle there is a throne room and everything, thats where King Sombra ruled,

Interesting theories. I can see the similarities...Lauren Faust did indeed say she was a fan of the other generations.

I think the Changelings and the Flutter Ponies are a bit far fetched. But a good theory, nonetheless.
