Magic Man 222 March 9, 2013 Share March 9, 2013 (edited) I've been thinking about it, and I think the way they handled the Changelings was very clever, not just because of how menacing and threatening they made them, but also because it was vague enough to reduce the possibility of canon clash in the future. The comic takes what we knew of the Changelings in the show and fleshes them out more, like how precisely they eat love, their conquering kingdoms, their shapeshifting skills and the ways they can use them to their advantage. But as for things like their origins and homeland, what they do has some implications, but still vague enough that if the show goes in a certain direction with them, we could take the comic and the show as both equally valid. I mean, for example, we saw the Changelings conquer a kingdom, raising the question of whether they're nomads or if they do have a homeland. The comic never really answers the question, but that's good because we don't know if the Changelings are set to reappear in Season 4. Now if the show confirms that they are indeed nomads, no clash in canon, but if they are shown to have a homeland, then it could easily be inferred that Chrysalis had taken absence from the crown and picked an army to accompany on her in a crusade for more land, it just got more muddled and personal with Twilight and the rest of the Mane Six' interference. It all works out either way the show goes, so props for the writers on that. Just to let you know, my headcanon and fanfics on the Changeling Homeland is based on the Far East like Imperial Japan and Korea (the North being more appropriate for the Changelings). I dunno, for me, it just really creates this contrast between it and Equestria North American/Western European culture, and god willing, if the show does go in that direction, it'd be great to see some East Asian architecture and culture shown through it. But also, picture this; Changeling Samurais! Edited March 10, 2013 by Magic Man
Orablanco Account 3,707 March 9, 2013 Share March 9, 2013 That's really the problem with doing a comic like this while the show is still going on is that the writers can't really innovate or do any considerable character development without clashing with show continuity. That said, yes, the way it was written was clever. Considering the challenge with writing a comic that has a meaningful story without being too big, it'll be interesting to see how they handle the first canon return of Nightmare Moon. pinkiefan1287 610 March 10, 2013 Share March 10, 2013 I also liked how the writers of the comic handled the Changelings. The Changelings are now trapped in the castle and they have no way of getting out. So this kinda shows that they wont be shown in season 4. I did like the Changelings as villains and I was kinda hopping they would come back, but maybe there is just no need for them anymore. It also shows that the Changelings don't have a Kingdom. If they had one Queen Chrysalis would have just gone back to that one and got more forces. To what it looks like they take over an area, capture who ever lives in that area, and then eats them. Once they eat all the food and they have no more food they move on and take over another kingdom. I have a hard time imagining the Changelings having a kingdom or any kinda of cutler at all. It could just be that the regular changelings have to real differences from one another. We don't even know if there are any females with them. The comic shows they can think and do things on their own, but it could be just orders from their Queen. So it could be they can't do many things on their own with out orders. So thats why I think Changelings don't have any land of their own or even any cutler. Made by Gone ϟ Airbourne

Like Twilight said, they won't be able to get out "for a while", that line therefore pretty much enables them to eventually get out of the castle. Don't take it that they won't return to in Season 4 entirely. I don't think the Changelings are just going to be tossed aside like that, especially as they have still so much potential. I kind of think you're presuming a bit too much from the comic, the continuity of which is still kinda semi. Well, again, like I said, the comics make it kind of vague. It does not explicitly say they do not have a kingdom or if there are not females (it's an army, not necessarily the entire species). Like I said, it can be inferred there is no kingdom, but nothing is for certain, hence why what the writers did with the Changelings here was so clever. It showed off how dangerous the Changelings are without causing any permanent conflict of canon with the show. I mean, okay, so they're currently stuck in the castle, big whoop, by the time of the show, they'll eventually get out for their next big scheme or hopefully, they're redemption/making peace with Equestria (here's hoping). Scootalove 10,689 March 10, 2013 Share March 10, 2013 I really do like the comics but, sometimes it's hard to write about comics and the show at the exact same time. I don't know how Marvel pulls it off but, in this case the Changelings portrayal in the comics looks excellent. To paraphrase Mordin Solus, a culture or art or anything like that implies that there is a presence some kind of thinking beyond survival. While I'm sure the changelings are intelligent and fully sentient beings, all we've seen of them so far is mindless feeding and oppression of other races. And their leader isn't exactly nurturing an enviroment that would make one say "Dude, let's make some art." What I saying is that they wouldn't have a culture because they don't care enough to have one. At least in my head canon. I'm sure they have some place where they retreat, but all it would be is a wasteland. Edited March 10, 2013 by CITRUS KING46 Onwards to my DeviantArt page! Sig by the illustrious Kyoshi! And I highly doubt that the Changelings well be seeking peace if they ever get out. One, I don't think the ponies well trust them that much, after the kidnapping of a princess, a town, and children, blowing up parts of their kingdom, threats of turning them into their food, defeating and imprisoning their leader. Not to mention their newest crime in the comic genocide. It's not like with Discord. He did not try and kill anyone and I kinda believe the whole reforming thing that took place with him. Not to mention Discords powers could be helpful to the world and he maybe able to make thing better. Now true he could go evil, but I would trust him more then the Changelings. Also what could the ponies gain from the changelings? What can they do to make life better? The only thing they would gain from peace is that the Changelings never step forth in their land. So thats why I don't see any signs of peace for them. I'm sure they have some place where they retreat, but all it would be is a wasteland. Well they may have land to call their own, but maybe they don't. Why would they need to take over a kingdom if they had land? It just seem like more work to capture other ponies and some may even fight back and then bring them back to their kingdom. Now maybe they take over the land and when they have it captured they send one back to bring the other to feed the new home. Still who knows.
