Restyling ponies manes: can anyone offer any advice?

So I have a collection of merch: the ones in question are all the mane 6, CMCs and Cheerlie 

 

I've decided I'd like to start restyling there manes to be more show accurate especially since some of there manes overtime have become unsightly and fluffy.

 

I don't really know what the best way to do this is though: because it's clear Rainbow Dash for example needs a mane cut but once the scissors have done there job there's no going back so I'm holding back doing anything before I've done my research.

 

So if anyone can offer any advice to restyling pony manes I'd be grateful
