private Rhapsody in Blue

The director just kept the scene going for the oddest of reasons... Sterling could feel himself faltering even as it was his time to sing ''Some Enchanted Evening"... Right before the kiss! The talk on politics had ended so quickly... and with a declaration of love no less! Apparently it seemed like the director was really soaking the awkwardness between them and felt that it was perfect for the scene! Sterling then began to sang the world-famous tune... while trying his best to embrace Blue Note... no Nellie, as lovingly as he could! He could hear giggling from above, leaving Sterling to wonder why everypony was giggling around him... did they all think he and Blue Note were a couple?

--------

"Hehehe! Do it now Applebloom! They're going to kiss!" Sweetie Belle giggled from above. This was going to be perfect, and nothing would stop Sweetie Belle from matching best friends together... Not that she knew that.

--------

Sterling now gave his kiss to Nellie... The director wanted it to last a while, so Sterling made sure to move towards her lips slowly... But when the mistletoe came down, it hit Sterling's nose! Sterling jumped at the thing that was poking at his nose, forcing the director's hooves to the situation!

"CUT CUT CUT! What is the meaning of this?! This was going to be perfect!! Who's up there?!" The director shouted angrily as the CMCs scuttled away, hoping that they wouldn't be caught.. Sterling looked upwards and noticed that the mistletoe was still hanging... Did everypony really think he and Blue Note were a couple?! Sterling gave a sigh, hoping that Blue Note wasn't too angry either...

Blue Note stepped back when she saw something falling from above the stage. "Mistletoe?" she thought. "Why would somepony do that?" It was frustrating, especially since she had a very low tolerance for pranks.

"I thought I heard voice from above the stage," she said. "I can't believe the nerve of some ponies." She looked very pointedly at the mistletoe. "Don't they understand that we're trying to do something serious?"

Sterling tried to think of a possible reason for the mistletoe to appear all the way from above, and who possibly could have tried to set up such a dumb idea... For him, it was something only fillies would do... Fillies... Wait... Sterling snapped his hooves and immediately rushed out towards the backstage, not even thinking about Blue Note's frustration at the fallen mistletoe. Sterling quickly rushed to the entrance to the upstairs region, quickly finding the two CMCs who were guilty of the deed. The two CMCs came to a grinding halt after they ran and bumped into Sterling as soon as he presented himself as an obstacle against them.

"Sweetie Belle... what   were you thinking placing the mistletoe down like that... you distracted a lot of ponies... especially Blue Note and the director..." Sterling scolded the two CMCs, particularly highlighting Blue Note's anger at the whole situation. It was already awkward enough between them, and the mistletoe just made things worse.

"Don't blame me! Sweetie Belle forced me into this!" Applebloom responded angrily. "Tell all that to Sweetie Belle! She forced me into it!" Applebloom continued, clearly trying to absolve herself of any guilt. Sweetie Belle looked on at Sterling with tears once Applebloom pointed her hoof at her.

"I'm sorry Sterling... I just wanted to see you guys kiss happily when it was time for you two to do so... I just wanted to encourage you because you were looking so awkward... I thought you were supposed to be happy with Nellie... and... oh...!" Sterling tried to stop Sweetie Belle, but she rushed off in tears... she felt like a real failure... and an idiot at that... Applebloom gave chase to Sweetie Belle, leaving Sterling to wonder more and more about his friendship with Blue Note...

-----

The director became even more furious when Sterling rushed off to the backstage. With Sterling gone, there was no way to continue the rehearsal at the time... So he called for another recess where Emile and Nellie were no longer needed until the end of Act I, which would be the end of the rehearsal. Cheesy and Ruby were going to be back on.

Blue Note was left standing on the stage by herself. Sterling took off so quickly, and the director called for them to move on. There was nothing to do but move backstage. Dread came over her at the thought of talking to Sterling about this. It was already awkward between them.

Sweetie Belle and Applebloom barreled past her. She saw Sterling standing farther away. She moved over to him. "What happened to them?" she asked. She felt unsure entering into this conversation, knowing that its direction might shift from the CMC to something less comfortable.

Sterling turned his head towards Blue Note with a jump. He wasn't sure whether to tell Blue Note about what two of the CMCs did to them... Sweetie Belle had a good intention about it, and she was in tears at the moment... Sterling shook his head, wondering what he should say... Deciding not to lie, Sterling tried to make Blue Note make him speak the truth out instead of him willingly doing it, so he countered with a question of his own, albeit in a very cheeky manner,

"Do... do you really want to know Blue Note?"

Blue Note's curiosity was piqued now. "What, will I be an accessory to their crime if you tell me?" she asked. Maybe some banter would ease the tension. It was a bit odd he wouldn't directly tell her what was going on though. She wondered if things were okay between them and if this awkwardness would disappear after rehearsal.

Blue Note sure had a good sense of humour. Unfortunately, it had to come at the wrong time. Sterling chuckled awkwardly in reply, still wondering how to say the truth to Blue Note without making it too awkward. Sterling gave out a deep breath before giving his attempt at saving their friendship from his own words...

"Blue Note... you see... Sweetie Belle was the one who came up with the idea. She thought we were a cute couple both in the story and in real life. She felt the awkwardness between us and she thought it was getting in our way for the story... She just wanted to help, and now she's in tears after how bad it turned out..." Sterling gave a sigh after giving his explanation, Hopefully Blue Note wouldn't be too angry at what he said, or what Sweetie Belle did for that matter... He could hear all the chattering that was going on between them... probably rumours about Emile and Nellie being a real life couple and having plans to break up perhaps...

"Ohh..." Blue Note said. The awkwardness reached its critical point for her. She paused a few beats. Sterling was wise not to bring this up immediately. "Well, this will be a good a lesson for her." She couldn't be too mad at Sweetie Belle; she wasn't doing anything out of spite. It still didn't help anything though. Blue Note sighed and decided to do the difficult thing. "This is really awkward for both of us. Isn't it?"

Sterling too gave out a sigh when Blue Note mentioned the awkwardness of the situation. This was probably it. Would he and Blue Note be forced to separate ways after South Pacific? He couldn't bear the thought... why did the awkwardness have to come so soon after they had become friends? Sterling hoped that it wouldn't have to come to a separation, but the way things were looking, maybe it would be the case...

"It... it really is... I... I honestly don't know what to say..." Sterling could feel his trembling heart cry out for a confession, but at the same time, Sterling didn't want to let his cards out now! It would ruin everything he hoped for between him and Blue Note! Their friendship would go downhill too, and that was the last thing he wanted given his situation back home... What was he to do?!

"Well... what do we do about Sweetie Belle?" Sterling asked unconvincingly, desperate to deflect the awkwardness away... even if it could be futile...

Blue Note felt a little better getting her feelings out. Sterling looked as confused and unsure as she felt. "I don't know either," she said. "You're my best friend and..." Blue Note had to pick her next words carefully; she didn't want this to go away. "And I hate to lose that to this." She gestured at their costumes and the set of South Pacific. "I've never had a friend like you before, and ponies like you don't come around everyday. The last thing I want to do is ruin it." She looked away from Sterling for a moment, never having showed so much vulnerability. It was freeing in a way, but it was also terrifying.

Sterling still kept a confused face when Blue Note now talked of their friendship. It was clear that Blue Note didn't want to veer away from the seemingly unavoidable conversation. It seemed that Sterling too had to think very carefully on what to say about their friendship. He was literally walking in blind with the whole situation beginning to reach its critical point.

And now... Blue Note just had to mention it... He was her best friend. Sterling's heart skipped a beat when she mentioned those words. He'd never had a mare call him her best friend in his life. Blue Note truly was the first mare to have called him that. Sterling gave a shake of his head, wondering exactly what to say... he too had to choose his words carefully...

"Blue Note... I can't deny it anymore. You too have been my best friend. You... you really mean a lot to me too... I have to say the same of you. Ponies like you don't come everyday either. I'm not embarrassed by you in any stretch. And I don't want something dumb like this to ruin our friendship either." Sterling replied as calmly as he could, which wasn't very calm given how he stuttered a lot. Deep down, Sterling wanted something more, but he knew it wasn't the right time to say such a thing... at least not yet.

"Okay," Blue Note said, breathing a sigh of relief. Nothing was going to go wrong between them. "We're going to be fine. We just have to get through South Pacific without any more incidents. I may be wrong in saying this, but I don't think anypony else will give us something to worry about." Hopefully the mistletoe was just a one off incident, never to occur again. Talking to Sterling made her better about their situation. Though underneath all of relief, a tiny part of her was disappointed. What if they could have become more? But staying best friends was for the best. Nothing was going to go wrong this way.

Sterling nodded in reply to what Blue Note had just said. He too was relieved that he and Blue Note were going to stay best friends. He knew how musical productions like this could ruin friendships because ponies would be ragging on their potential relationship, placing them on the spotlight. Sterling breathed deeply before giving his reply to the situation,

"Yeah... we just have to get through this... and then we can keep on being best friends in peace..." Sterling knew this was the best response he had at the moment. But at the same time, it didn't feel satisfying to him. It was as if his heart wanted to pester him about something because it wasn't getting what it wanted. Sterling had to continually use his will power to keep it shut, but it just couldn't be helped. Sterling mentally spoke to the heart, saying he would talk it over with it once the rehearsal was finished. This was going to be a long night...

Blue Note gave him a small smile. "I think we'll be all right," she said. "Honestly I think Ruby and Cheesy are the ones they need to worry about. I don't how understand how they can be in the same room with some sort of minor explosion." Without Sterling she would go insane having to see those two all the time. "I'm sure this purgatory called rehearsal will end soon."

---

Before they were needed on stage, Cheesy had to ask Ruby a question. Cheesy knew he had to ask it with some finesse, or he could forget getting anything from her. Luckily, charming ponies was one of his greatest skills. "Hey, Ruby," he said confidently going up to her.

"What?" she snapped. Cheesy didn't cower or snap back like she was used to. He just flashed a grin.

"You're a really talented actress." Ruby's annoyance melted away.

"Thanks," she said cautiously.

"You know," he leaned in and lowered his voice, "you're the only pony here with real talent. Blue Note and Sterling don't belong here, but you don't just belong; you own that stage. And me, I'm nowhere near as good as you."

"Thank you for being the only pony with any idea of what constitutes real talent!" Ruby beamed at Cheesy. She finally was getting what she deserved from somepony at least!

"See, I want to keep up with you, but I'm not a natural like you. I need some help, and you're the best pony for it. So what do ya say? Can you help me learn to play Billius."

Ruby sized him up, giving him a thorough look. "I suppose you need to be able to keep up with me. I'll help."

"Thanks," Cheesy said with a grin. "I'm looking forward to it."

Sterling chuckled when Blue Note mentioned Cheesy and Ruby.

"Yeah... I'm not sure how they can get along if at all! They certainly act very differently from each other from what I've seen!" Sterling continued to chuckle, unaware that the two ponies were actually conversing decently at the moment. Then it occurred to Sterling... Sweetie Belle was probably still saddened by her little "encouragement" to him and Blue Note.

"Blue Note... should we be checking on Sweetie Belle...? I'm worried about her..." Sterling asked with a rather worrisome face...

---------

Off in the hallways of the University of Manehattan, not far from the auditorium where "South Pacific" was being rehearsed, there was a white filly crying by her lonesome... Applebloom was trying to comfort her to no avail... Having given up, Applebloom headed back to the auditorium, waiting to be called up for the end of Act 1... the white filly that was Sweetie Belle was feeling her worst... She had no intention to mess up the rehearsal... Then, a white mare with a free-flowing purple mane saw her younger sister crying at the hallways... and rushed up to her...

"Sweetie dear! Whatever is the matter?! Tell me everything that happened during the rehearsal this instant!" Rarity quickly threw her hooves, placing a warm hug over her...

"Rarity... what are you doing here? I thought you still had that errand to run at Manehattan..." Sweetie Belle spoke with sniffles... She had thought Rarity was still trying to sell her newly designed Winter coats to a dealer in Manehattan...

"I managed to get all that done early, but that's not the point! Tell me all that happened here! You look terrible darling!" Rarity urged Sweetie Belle as lovingly as she could... It was within her to comfort her sister... Sweetie Belle then told all that happened, leaving Rarity shaking her head inwardly. Sweetie Belle was always the type to act on her feelings first...

"Sweetie dear... you understand that you can't just place a mistletoe down like that right? Relationships are a very serious matter, and although I see the lovely intentions you had, you simply can't try to force something that may not be there... Love takes time Sweetie Belle... Even if this is just a play, think of the ponies you may have impacted by doing that..." Rarity hugged her all the more tightly in a show of love. She didn't want to rebuke Sweetie Belle, but Sweetie Belle needed to learn a valuable lesson...

"I understand Rarity... it's just that... they looked so cute together, and it was like something was in the way between them... It was like they were worried about something, and I just wanted to help... I remember hearing about a mistletoe being used to encourage ponies to kiss... and I thought it would help Emile and Nellie...." Sweetie Belle replied with another sniffle.

"Well Sweetie dear, just because they look cute doesn't mean they're automatically a couple. Also, the mistletoe is a tradition reserved for couples. What if the two ponies weren't a couple? It may have made the situation worse for them..." Rarity replied calmly, trying to teach her cute, but naive sister a lesson in love. Sweetie Belle nodded, her sniffles beginning to decrease.

"I... I understand... But still... what if the two were really best friends... and had a very real chance of being a couple... that's what they looked like..." Sweetie gave the best squeakie face she could give... but Rarity shook her head again.

"Dear... I'm sure that possibility may be real, but like I said, you can't just force a relationship like that. Most relationships don't work like that." Rarity replied as coolly as she could. Deep down, she too liked to match make, but she knew her limits...

-----

Back at University of Manehattan's cafe, Chemm and Rocky were talking again, but it certainly wasn't the friendliest of conversations... The two had grabbed their coffees as usual, but something wasn't right about this encounter...

"Chemm... I have to talk to you about something..." Rocky began with a solemn look.

"What's up?" Chemm replied with her eyes raised. She was concerned about their relationship, but at the same time, she couldn't help but blaming Rocky for his constant fear about their relationship...

"Seriously Chemm... I don't think this is going to work. You've been so busy... and  you've been hanging out with other stallions too..." Rocky replied with a sterner look now. He had enough.

"What are you talking about? You're being paranoid. Those stallions are just friends! Don't you understand that?! Jeez!" Chemm's frustration was showing in her reply, giving an angry look herself.

"Chemm. You claim to be busy with your work, and yet I see you hanging out with other stallions when you should be back at your work." Rocky replied with an angrier look.

"Ugh! I AM busy with my science! You always catch me when I'm free is all!" Chemm replied, her frustrations blowing once more.

"Well why don't you spend that free time with me then?! Seriously Chemm, I had enough, especially with you and that... ERLEN... being lab partners..." Rocky replied, now standing up from his seat.

"What?! He was my only other choice Rocky! What do you expect?! Ugh! I've had enough of these arguments! Ugh!" Chemm replied, she too getting up from her seat.

"Well if you've had enough of them, I hope you think hard about your commitments! I'm outta here! It's over." Rocky then turned and walked away with a stomp, not even taking his coffee with him... Chemm was left there... to think about what just happened... and just before Hearth's Warming of all days... Chemm gave a sigh and trotted away, looking at the ground...

"I suppose we should go find her," Blue Note said. "She seemed upset, and I can't fault her too much. She's just a filly." While the mistletoe hadn't exactly done anything positive for her, she couldn't stay too mad. Sweetie Belle was a young pony who didn't know any better. "Where exactly should we check?"

Sterling nodded in reply. He was worried about Sweetie Belle. He knew that she didn't intend anything malicious with her mistletoe, and he wanted to see if she was alright.

"Well Sweetie Belle left through the back door here the last time I saw, and Applebloom just came back, so she can't have gone far... Must be in the hallways." Sterling replied as he motioned for Blue Note to come along. Hopefully Sweetie Belle really wasn't too far...

---------

Rarity continued to comfort Sweetie Belle as much as she could with her hugs. Sweetie Belle's tears were still there, but it was beginning to cease just when Sterling walked up to Sweetie Belle to see if she was alright... Rarity looked up and saw the crimson pony, but Sterling was quick to talk first...

"Umm... hello? Are you... Sweetie Belle's sister?"

"Why... yes I am good stallion... who are you?" Rarity asked in reply. Given the costume he was still wearing, Rarity guessed that this was the stallion Sweetie Belle was talking about... he seemed nice enough, but Sweetie Belle was right on one thing... he certainly wasn't the most suave pony she ever met.

"I'm Sterling Crimson... and I just wanted to see if Sweetie Belle was alright... she ran off crying after trying to place the mistletoe down on us..." Sterling explained. She certainly seemed like a very glamorous pony as reports of her suggested. After of all, Sterling was talking with an Element of Harmony...

"Oh... she's alright. She's sorry for the trouble she caused from you. She didn't mean any harm from what she did, and she also says that she learned her lesson about love... right Sweetie Belle?" Perhaps it wasn't a bad idea for Sweetie Belle to try to match make Sterling... after all, he looked like a lost cause to her. But she was certainly doing it wrong... besides, love can come softly right?

"It's alright. We were worried about Sweetie Belle is all..." Sterling replied.

Blue Note nodded in agreement with Sterling. "We're not mad at you," she said to Sweetie Belle. "We know you didn't mean any harm." She hoped saying this would make the young filly feel better. She didn't need to be miserable over this. But at least she seemed to be repentant. That was the important thing.

Sweetie Belle's tears began to soften as Blue Note agreed with Sterling's acceptance of her apology. She then looked up to the two friends and spoke in reply.

"I'm sorry about all that... I just thought you two needed some help with South Pacific... but I shouldn't have done it." Sweetie Belle formally apologized, hoping that Sterling and Blue Note weren't too hurt by the whole fiasco.

"It's alright Sweetie Belle. You had good intentions, but next time, think before you leap." Sterling replied with a warm smile. Sweetie Belle smiled back in reply before she got up from Rarity's loving hug, jumped, and ran back to the backstage to reunite with Applebloom... Rarity and the two friends were now alone.

"Well...I should be getting going then. I'll have to keep a good eye on Sweetie Belle and Applebloom from now on." Rarity said. She then got up and trotted away, giving a wave to Sterling before she was out of sight.

"Well... I guess it's just us two now again... Huh...?" Sterling spoke weakly. He wasn't sure what to make of Sweetie Belle's "idea" to him and Blue Note. Was there something she saw that they didn't?

"Yeah," Blue Note said. The awkwardness hadn't entirely disappeared. "Should we go back? Or maybe the director won't miss us," Blue Note said sarcastically. She punctuated her statement with a snort. "Hopefully Ruby and Cheesy are keeping him busy and he doesn't miss us too much." She could talk to Sterling like a friend. As long as she didn't try to hard and didn't think about it too much, she could do it. Sweetie Belle may have been onto something, but she didn't know everything. She didn't know how unbearable it was to be abandoned or forced to say goodbye. Staying friends was for the best.

Sterling chuckled at Blue Note's apparent sarcasm. When it came to the director, he called everypony in and out as he pleased.

"Yeah. Maybe the director's having a meal of them both today, especially Cheesy! I wonder how he got into the production in the first place... he's certainly not the best of actors!" Sterling continued with another chuckle. It felt good to him that both ponies were trying to diffuse the awkwardness. It was most certainly working, for they were still talking like friends, but his heart was still having a hard time accepting the fact that they would remain best friends for the time being...

-------

"Alright, places everypony! We're going to move into the scene featuring Bloody Mary, Cable, and Billus! Since Cable's already here, I still need Ruby and Cheesy!" The director called out. They needed to sing "Bali Ha'i before they ended rehearsal for today... unfortunately they couldn't go as far as he liked, but it was certainly progress since most of the ponies were handling their lines well. He couldn't wait for this scene. It was finally time for Ruby and Cheesy to get singing once again... Just what he needed to see...

(I was wondering... will Ruby and Cheesy be a couple?)

"I don't even know why he would want to be in the production," Blue Note said. "He's not the most musically inclined. Last time I checked he didn't even know what a clarinet was." She was almost curious enough to ask him what they hay he was doing here. Almost. Being near Cheesy at rehearsals was unbearable. She always did her best to look away when he was near, and she never stood in the same area as him if she could help it. Otherwise, she might be in danger of either screaming or crying, depending on what he was stupid enough to say. "How the director puts up with him, I will never know."

----

Ruby could appreciate that Cheesy could at least recognize talent, despite being unable to produce it. Helping him was for the best of the show, even if he was a tad insufferable and colossally ignorant. His work ethic would be the first thing he needed to improve. "Wipe that stupid grin off your face, we need to get out there and sing."

Cheesy still gave her an grin. "Lead the way."

(I think they would get on each other's nerves too much for that. I've got different plans for them...)

Sterling shrugged when Blue Note pondered about Cheesy. He certainly wasn't the type to like music, and Blue Note mentioning his ignorance about her clarinet left Sterling shaking his head as well.

"Well... from what you've said, he's not musically inclined, nor is he great at drama... perhaps somepony forced us into it like we were... somewhat?" Sterling replied with a guess of his own. What other possibility was there? Sterling and Blue Note were technically forced into the show as well without any sort of audition as well... and he didn't feel they were the best actors either. They may have been good singers, but Sterling didn't feel that he could play the lead role so naturally as the director suggested.

-----

The director was now telling everypony what this scene was supposed to show, albeit with a condescending tone... He felt that the ponies were so lost that they needed the simplest language he could give them so they could understand what was going on... He had to that for the whole rehearsal, so why not make it particularly clear at the end?

"Well in this scene, Ruby is supposed to tell Cheesy about a remote island that's far off in the distance... and Cheesy, having always been intrigued with the place, starts to sing about it with Ruby! I hope that's easy enough to do for two aspiring actors!"

"That must have been it," Blue Note said. "I can't imagine him joining willingly. I just wish I didn't have to see him. I was hoping that I'd finally be rid of him at the end of the semester." After everything he had done to make her life miserable, Blue Note would not have minded if he fell off the face of Equestria. "Just a few more months of this, right?"

------

Ruby wanted to mention that she was an aspiring composer and singer as well, but the scene had to start. She performed her part flawlessly, naturally. Her line deliveries were perfectly timed, and her inflections were just right for Bloody Mary. Cheesy, having gained a bit of confidence, became more convincing than before. However, confidence could not substitute for lack of knowledge. He continued to miss, distort, and forget words while he was singing. Ruby did her best to cover for him, but even a perfect performer like her couldn't fix everything.

Sterling nodded when Blue Note mentioned that it would only be a few more months. He didn't feel too tortured by the other players like Blue Note was, but the practicing needed for the performances was tiring, and it forced him to sacrifice time from his violin playing. To make matters worse, Dr. Thorrington liked to playfully tease him about him playing a singing role instead of being with the firsts for the concert. "We've missed you a lot Sterling! Why did you choose to sing?!" was something he would always say whenever Sterling came for a piano lesson. Even if Dr. Thorrington appreciatesdhis singing capabilities, his playful teasing wasn't something Sterling laughed with so much...

"Yeah... just a few more months. At least this rehearsal's almost over." Sterling spoke assertively. He just wanted this to end... Then it just came to him... the mistletoe... it was supposed to be Hearth's Warming Eve in a few days... Hoping to change the topic to something more cheerful, he decided to ask Blue Note about the joyful holiday,

"By the way, what are you doing this Hearth's Warming Eve?" Sterling wanted Blue Note to be free deep inside, but he just didn't want to admit it as he awaited for Blue Note's response.

----

The director was very pleased to see that Bloody Mary was really acting like a honky tonk who didn't know much English at all. He chuckled happily when he heard Ruby sing with her best Tonkinese accent. The same couldn't be said of Billus as he struggled with some of his lines. The director could only shake his head whenever Billus stumbled. At least his voice was at the right pitches and at least he had a good Manehattan accent. He already told him to keep practicing, so he couldn't say much more to him, wanting to at least finish the scene before the ponies left for the night.
