Adente 1,000 December 19, 2013 Share December 19, 2013 So I'm a senior in high school, and will be heading off to college next fall. As I get closer to starting college, what I'm going to do in college is starting to float closer to the forefront of my thoughts. Obviously I plan on doing intramural sports and joining some clubs that I think are fun, but the centerpoint of what I'm thinking of is Fraternities. My dad was a Fraternity Brother, and its in my blood, and I just can't wait for it! However, I'm wondering, when is the best time to rush? Should I rush right away as soon as I arrive on campus, or wait a semester? Obviously, if I join right away, I rush with the rest of my class, and that would be good, but I'd still be learning the ropes of college, and that combined with picking a Frat could be really stressful. Not to mention, if I'm new on campus, I won't have had time to observe the different Frats and figure out which ones are the most prestigious and offer the best opportunities. If I delay for a semester, I'd have plenty of time to assimilate to college and figure out the best Frats, but I'd have much less company to rush with, singling me out much more. What do you guys think is the ideal time to rush?
CometSpeed 38 December 19, 2013 Share December 19, 2013 the only time i " rush " is at the last minute... i think it would be wise, to do as you said and wait. dont overwhelm yourself from the start with frat obligations, and the new campus/life and, there is no set time like you made it outto be ... just join one when ready and 100% sure on which one is best for you stay calm, and just " just to the just " Comet : Just Justing to The Just ... Mightymags 1,053 December 19, 2013 Share December 19, 2013 I haven't been around for spring rush yet so I don't know how much help I can be... It would also helped if I had actually joined a sorority, but I took a risk and now I'm not, which I've come to terms with. ANYWAYS. From what I've heard so far being a frat pledge sucks. If you want to get all the crap over with then you should do it right away. I don't know everything you have to do, but I've heard how annoying it is to do chores and such for the house along with school work of your own. Handling those responsibilities would be easier during spring when you have a feel for how school and the college is, but you'll have less people to share those responsibilities with. I don't know how different frat rush is, but in sorority rush we got a pretty good look at the houses and what they were like. Chances are you'll narrow it down to a few that you would be able to fit into no matter what. Being on campus and not in a sorority/frat you don't actually hear much about the houses at all. So even if you wait until spring you probably won't know much about any of the houses until you rush unless you have a friend in every single house. Plus rushing with everyone in the fall is fun! Everyone's doing it and it's a good way to meet people right away that may not end up in a frat with you. But ultimately the choice is up to you.

Mightymags 1,053 December 19, 2013 Share December 19, 2013 That's excellent advice. So are you planning on rushing in the spring? I'm going to consider it, but most likely not until next fall. I was going to join this new sorority that was opening a chapter at my school, but I had to drop rush to do that because they were doing a separate rush for this year. Then I found out the cost for that one (because they have to have money for a house and everything) was about $300 a month, which is like the cost for living-in at any other sorority. I don't have that much money saved up unfortunately... So next fall I'll have money from working over the summer and it might be more feasible.
