Thinking of creating video/audio remixes of mlp

I feel like I need to ask the community if there are any legal issues in doing this and what I should do to avoid doing anything that I shouldn't do.

 

Anyway, as the title says I'm planning on creating mlp videos. I have a video editor installed and ready (all I really need to do with that is learn how to use it), but I don't know exactly where I can find/download mlp episodes... I'm not sure if downloading them from youtube is legal, because I'm planning on publishing my videos on youtube.

 

If someone can tell me where I can find episodes that I can use to remix, that'd be great! Thanks!

I'm not a legal expert and I haven't done research for quite a while, take what I'm about to give with a bit of salt.

 

          Technically what you want to do is illegal but the same could be said about the majority of fan works for any show. The reason why companies don't put down a majority of fan works is because it's just not worth it in the long run. The reality is that so long as you DO NOT put adds on your goodies or make dosh off it in any way shape or form, you won't have to worry. What you'll really need to worry about is the bots on Youtube who may automatically flag your videos for either video or audio content. Keep in mind that most videos on youtube get flagged/removed not due to video clips, but by its audio. But lets say your videos did get flagged or removed from youtube, will you be thrown into jail or fined? It's a big nope, nothing's really going to happen. The most you'll have to do is have the option to contest whether or not the goodies you were flagged for is indeed your content or not. 

 

As for acquiring episodes you wish to edit, well, everything's just a search engine away.

Here's the thing, you can either purchase DVDs and rip them, or you can download episodes online.  You can downlaod them legally through iTunes, and I don't know if any DRM on the videos that may stop you from editing them, but there are ways around that.  If you choose to download them illegally online, there are many methods to do this, one being Bit Torrent, but that would be against the law, so use at your own discretion. 

 

Once you have the content, you can do whatever you want with it and post it online, as long as you don't monetize off of it (make money).  So no adds.  This actually helps and supports the creators of the content, because a ton of now bronies who purchase lot's of merchandise, were introduced by fan videos, so taking them down would take a large effort, and end up doing more harm to their pockets than good.
