Rainbow Rocks novel by Perdita Finn

So I downloaded this from iTunes (or whatever it is you get books from) and read it last night.

Ehh...

The book is kind of a mess. As near as I can tell the whole purpose is to tie all the Rainbow Rocks shorts together into a cohesive storyline and explain how the human Mane 6 form a band.

It's okay I guess. A lot of it seemed sort of awkward and stilted, and I'm not sure Perdita Finn really gets the style of humor the show has. Plus prose seems to be a lousy format to really get the musical nature of Rainbow Rocks across.

I now have a pretty good idea of what the rest of the Rainbow Rocks shorts are going to be about. Chapter 2 and 3 for instance are just a retelling of the most recent short "Guitar Centered". I don't know if that's good or bad. I've basically been spoilered.

So, yeah, not necessarily the best use of money. If you want to read pony books, then all the stuff by GM Berrow is way better including her novelization of the original Equestria Girls.

Looking at the chapter titles alone, I can pretty much tell which chapters adapt the shorts where the Humane 5 get their instruments. But for the curious (or those who like/don't care being spoilered), think we could get a quick runthrough of what each chapter is about?

S'pose. @@immblueversion

I probably messed up some details because I was skimming through the book.

Warning: Seriously, this is going to spoil the Rainbow Rocks shorts

Chapter 1: The Ponies in the Band!

Twilight Sparkle in Equestria is thinking about the human versions of the ponies. In the other world the girls are gong to the fair and singing and DJ Pon-3 overhears them and suggests they form a band and play at the Spring Fling and they decide to go for it. Trixie hears this and declares she's going to make her own band.

Chapter 2 Guitar Centered & Chapter 3 Dueling Guitars

A somewhat expanded retelling of the "Gutar Centered" short.

Chapter 4 Springtime's Soundtrack

DJ Pon-3 is thinking about the band and listening to music. A retelling of part of the "Music to My Ears" short.

Chapter 5 The Case of the Missing Bass

Applejack and the girls go to Applejack's home to get her bass guitar. When they arrive she finds it missing and after some effort gets Granny Smith to remember what happened to it: She sold it in a yard sale to Flim & Flam.

Chapter 6 Rock-and-Roll Hall of Shame

The girls go to Flim and Flam's store and find the bass for sale there. Flim and Flam tell Applejack that she can have it for $1000, and Applejack explains about Granny Smith's mistake and offers to pay them back the $2 they originally paid for it. They don't believe her and she offers to play the bass to prove it's hers. Applejack rocks out on the bass and gets her pony ears and tail. The Flim Flam brothers agree to give it back, but they had all sorts of expenses that still needed to be covered for the bass. Applejack ends up with a job playing the bass in front of their store in a banana costume to cover those expenses.

Chapter 7 Jam Session

Trixie and DJ Pon-3 talk about Applejack while watching her play bass in the banana suit. Pon-3 then goes to the coffee shop as depicted n the "Music to My Ears" short.

Chapter 8 A Walk on the Wild Side & Chapter 9 The Pied Piper of Hamsters

A retelling of "Hamstocalypse Now".

Chapter 10 Pinkie on the One

The girls are trying to figure out what instrument Pinkie should play and take a break to see Granny Smith in the school's kitchen. Granny Smith is making cookies and Pinkie offers to help stir the batter. Granny Smith tells her not to stir too fast or the cookies will come out too hard. Pinkie really gets into it and starts stirring two bowls at once. While watching Pinkie effectively using two hands at once, Rainbow Dash suggests to Rarity that Pinkie could be a drummer. The cookies come out really hard because Pinkie stirred too fast.

Chapter 11 Drumroll Please!

Pinkie is making decorations for The Spring Fling and using lots of glitter. The girls try to hint to her that she should be their drummer but Pnkie is oblivious. Pinkie ends up making a banner that is hard to lift because she used so much glitter and while they're carrying the whole baseball team crashes into it are knocked back because it is so stiff.

Chapter 12 Snared!

The girls are eating lunch in the cafeteria and pinkie is pounding a rhythm with her knife and spoon. The girls finally convince Pinkie to try playing the drums. They take her to a drum set and she's a natural and gets her pony ears and tail.

Chapter 13 Player Piano

Rarity is unsuccessfully trying to push a grand piano across the school to a practice room where the band is rehearsing. The piano had been offered to her by Trixie and it had no wheels on it. Rarity's phone is dead, so she can't contact her friends. She then sees the Diamond Dog boys and flirts with them to move the piano for her. She gets on top and directs them. Meanwhile the girls are getting concerned about where Rarity is when she bursts in with the piano.

Chapter 14 Keyboard Magic

Rarity's piano is filling up the whole practice room and Rarity insists on using it. Pinkie Pie spots a keytar and the girls convince her to try it. Rarity rocks out and gets pony ears and a tail. The Diamond Dogs are mesmerized and Rarity convinces them to move the piano back across campus for her.

Chapter 15 School of Rock

The band is practicing and filling the whole school with music and are making all the students unconsciously dance. Pon-3 watches all this in a retelling of the last part of "Music to My Ears".

Chapter 16 Music to Our Ears!

The girls are decorating the gym for the Spring Fling and are arguing over what theme to use. The girls finally agree to combine each of their own ideas and also include a tribute to Twilight Sparkle.

Chapter 17 Dancing Room Only!

The night of the big dance. Trixie wants to play first, but it turns out she forgot to actually find any members for her band. The girls play and put on a good performance and even Trixie finds herself dancing to the music. Meanwhile in Equestria, Twilight Sparkle is thinking about the girls and finds herself singing the same song they're playing.

Oh, and I forgot to mention the totally awesome and original name for their band
