OC Draft - (Reformed) Erythema
Erythema's personality differs depending on which part of the timeline is chosen. There is the Pre-Reunion version where her personality is very much like in her backstory, the Post-Reunion version where she's psychologically torn apart and undergoes major character development and now there's this new version "Reformed" where she's recovered from much of her psychological disturbances.
---------
Name: Erythema
Age: 26
Gender: Female
Species: (Donkey) Non-Pony
Cutie Mark: N/A
Personality: Her personality really depends on the environment she finds herself in. When in the line of duty (she's employed in emergency services) or any moment that requires her to be on high alert and demand quick decisions, she comes off as very fierce and focused in character. In calm situations, she tends to have a candid personality, if coming off as simply disinterested. She tends to come across as reserved and usually doesn't speak unless spoken to. While fairly adept at steering a conversation towards whatever direction she chooses (she has experience in being mindful of emotions such as pride, shame and guilt -- both in herself and in others -- and how that relates to personal identity), what makes social interactions a little awkward is that she can't seem to fathom ponies talking over nothing in particular. She's always been disgusted with gossip and whatever form of posturing to make oneself look or sound like they're worth more than others. All she seems to imagine talking is about is exchanging useful information or advice. The only equine she is able to talk familiarly with is her twin brother SunBurn but he's someone she's known for as long as she can remember. It just seems like she hasn't grasped the concept of getting to know someone quite yet. She's still innately distrustful of stallions and can't help herself but suspect some ulterior motive to "flirting."
Backstory: It turns out that this equine is from some island far off of Equestria's shores and hasn't been around for too long. She shipwrecked onto Equestria a year back and very few people know about her life prior to that event. When she and her twin brother SunBurn were reunited, she had a complete mental breakdown when it finally sank in that Equestria is society that is peaceful beyond anything she dared to imagine, in stark contrast to her old life as a soldier. Her breakdown was very dramatic; she thrashed and she screamed as though her body was on fire but SunBurn risked getting injured to calm her down. He did this by holding her face directly in front of her and locking eyes with her. When her eyes finally locked with his, her energy drained away and she collapsed. Although conscious, she couldn't move or speak because her will was too broken. The reality of Equestria caused her to question the relevance of her very existence and it almost cost her her life at several points. Without the old narrative, she had lost the ability to cope with her grotesque old memories which tormented her extremely.
Support came not only from her brother but also from Princess Luna visiting her grotesque nightmares. Eventually she was also admitted to a psychiatric ward and had therapy sessions. The new narrative eventually became: "That was then, this is now. That was there, this is here." This became her new mantra and it helped her to move on but even though she isn't having nearly as many nightmares as before, as well as being able to mostly cope with her old memories, she still felt... useless, parasitic. All she believed she was good for is injuring and maiming others if not something less merciful but she just doesn't consider that an option as she doesn't wish to return to her old life as a soldier. She felt very indebted to Equestrian society and still she does to this day but for some time she's had a difficult time figuring out how she could begin to reciprocate all the kindness she had received and the great pains taken by its citizens to give her a new chance at life.
She went job hunting and took on various jobs she could find because the very least she could do was get an income and donate her labor to Equestrian society but few jobs seemed to really satisfy her until her brother gave her a suggestion. That would be to repurpose the education and training she's received in her old life. Virtues she's always held close to her heart is self-discipline, physical fitness, undying endurance and unrelenting focus. She started trying the more physically strenuous types of jobs such as construction worker, farmhoof, working in factories under strenuous conditions... A lot of jobs that are more typical for stallions rather than mares.
Eventually she did find a job that really touched her heart; firefighting. It's a place where she gets to put her closely-held virtues to use but that's not what touches her. What touches her is that she saves lives without any discrimination of species or - most importantly of them all - social status. She is tired of serving masters and wishes to serve all equines instead of just the powerful. What really cemented her into this line of work was when she saved the life of a young filly and brought her safely to her parents and colt sibling. In this family reunion she saw her own family. A mother's love, a father's tireless devotion and a sibling's innocent care... It reminded her of her own family before things went south. The warmth combined with the nostalgia proved too much for her and she couldn't help but break down crying. Her coworkers looked on but the family approached to comfort her; filly, colt and parents. For that one moment since a very long time, she felt the love and connection of a family sharing their joy and empathy with one another. She could have sworn that she had felt the presence of her deceased parents, looking on at their little filly all grown up and overjoyed to see that she has found peace and happiness. In this, she felt as though the souls of her parents can finally rest in peace. In the wake of this event, she has vowed to pledge her life in the service of other equines regardless of species and social status.
Other: Erythema is currently employed as a firefighter residing in Fillydelphia but she has become curious of other emergency service jobs excluding the position of royal guard. Although she's been in Equestria for nary a year, she will not talk about her life prior to that point. Only her twin brother, Princess Luna and her therapists know. Her devotion to work becomes apparent when she's doing her job and only in those high-stress situations does her past ruthless personality show itself the most. She has always loathed fighting; the only difference between then and now is that she doesn't have to.
