Rarity much like Rainbow Dash is another character many people either love or hate but while she has her share of fans she consistently ranks toward the bottom of most popular ponies in the mane 6. This is because many people find her extremely annoying largely due to her overly dramatic premadonna attitude which can come off to some people as extremely shallow and even somewhat "bitchy". Some of her fans though actually like this about her and find this aspect of her character to be humorous though the only two times in the show I have found this to be funny were Rarities reaction to finding out that Sweetie Belle was Gabby Gums in Ponyville Confidential and the episode A Dog and Pony Show where Rarity played the diamond dogs for chumps.

Despite sometimes being shallow and vain Rarity has also shown on several occasions such as Suited for Success when she made dresses for all of her friends for the Grand Galloping Gala for free and in risking her reputation in high society in Suited For Success by refusing to abandon her friends that she is a generous and loyal friend. She has also shown a great deal of love toward her sister Sweetie Belle by going to great lengths to please her often by doing things she dosen't normally want to do many of these things involve getting her hooves dirty. She is also a hard working, highly successful enterprenuer who just so happens to sell dresses.

Rarity is the most contradictory and complex of the mane 6 characters and that is one main reasons why her fans actually like her. These contradictions make her a very interesting character but I feel that her negative aspects are often overemphasized in many of her appearances for comedic affect which I feel does a disservice to her as a character because it makes her seem like a 2 dimensional character when the exact opposite is true. This is thankfully not a problem in episodes where she is the main focus where she shines quite well as a character but it does hold her back from her full potential as a character.

I am not saying the over dramatic premadonna aspect of her character should be removed completely just that it shouldn't be laid on so thick that it becomes difficult for many people to see her positive traits. Rarity has the most untapped potential of all the mane 6 characters, and I wholeheartedly agree with Rarity fans that hasn't gotten enough attention in season 3 and as a longtime Applejack fan completely understand what it is like to have your favorite pony overshadowed. Season 3 was pretty encouraging as it was the season Applejack got her due and caused alot of people to give her a second look, perhaps season 4 will do the same for Rarity. Rarity has an incredible amount of potential and I hope that the writers can bring more of that out in future episodes.
