I have a beef with the "it's against bronies' headcanon" strawman (S5 spoilers)

With the 100th episode of FIM around the corner, there's speculation for what will come up next. I'm looking forward to it, but I'm also somewhat reserved, because the episode will be nothing without a solid story and characterizations that make sense with how the background ponies act and look. Core brony fandom references are nothing new, but DHX's track record has been rather spotty.   And lately, one of the reasons many people are looking for it (or not) is "because bronies will complain a

A "feminine show" doesn't equal "a little girl's show."

More than a month ago, I replied back in a topic with this comment: See the bolded part? It's been a trend that I've using lately and stuck with it. Rather than calling FIM a "little girls' show," I called it a "feminine" or pro-feminist show.   The reason why is simple: Femininity and masculinity are gender-blind. Millions of girls worldwide openly display a combination of supposedly feminine and masculine qualities. For boys, the very same thing. Unfortunately, like "masculinity," "feminin

My third anniversary on the MLP Forums

That was my introduction to the MLP Forums on March 1, 2012. Three years ago today. Ironically, the first ever Derpy Day.   Needless to say, it's shocking how much time flies when you're having fun here. Back when I registered, I was still considered a newbie in both the fandom and the forums themselves. Prior, I wasn't that immerse in the fandom, but the Derpy controversy changed that. March 1, 2012 can all but be considered my permanent arrival in the core brony fandom. Rather than talking a

Discord's Morality in The Return of Harmony

Author's Note: Credit goes to @@Batbrony, Wind Chaser, Tommy_Oliver, @@Dulset Tarn, @@Arctofire, Digibro, and @@Nuke87654 for this positive critique of Discord.   It's no secret, The Return of Harmony was Friendship Is Magic's best two-parter until The Cutie Map aired. Each of the Mane Six shone. The comedy was very effective. Twilight was the central character, but didn't become intrusive nor feel like it was a Twilight episode. Meanwhile, her Discorded friends were hilarious and had merit f

Flash Sentry: A Critique of His Character

Author's Note: Credit goes to critiques from Tommy_Oliver, Silver-Quill, and VoiceOfReason for this critique of Flash Sentry. One of the biggest elephants in not only Equestria Girls, but FIM altogether. Both movies have a host of problems, and one of them is Flash Sentry. If there's one point where you can narrow down the laziness of the entire alternate world, it's him. Poor writing, lazy direction, character derailment, playing clichés to the letter. Flash Sentry is a lot like the charac

Bachan's death nearly 10 years later

Back when I was in my late-teens to my early-twenties, I was really into anime and anime fanfiction. Besides Digimon, other anime that captivated me over the years were Escaflowne, Monster Rancher, Yu-Gi-Oh, Sonic X, Naruto, S-Cry-Ed, and Cardcaptor Sakura. Some of them I'm still a fan of today.   One other anime I grew to liking was Inuyasha. Great worldbuilding, decent comedy, and decent characters. (I, however, despise Kagome in the anime because her characterization and power to sit Inuyas

Nickelodeon's Breadwinners's "Love Loaf" is even creepier than I thought.

It's the same old. Another blog from me bitching about Nickelodeon's Breadwinners, a show worse than Sanjay & Craig, Fanboy & Chum Chum, and current Spongebob.   Last year, I went on a tirade about why that show is so terrible. The animation and characters are just terrible. The humor and stories are even worse, relying a lot on butts (including twerking) and stereotypes. It's honestly baffling that Breadwinners has any support and remains on the air.   In my rant last year, I ranted

One big fandom peeve: "You're afraid of change."

One big pet peeve I have from many corners of this fandom is the STUPID "you're afraid of change" strawman. Instead of creating a debate about why the change is good or bad, too many destruct the argument to "You don't like it? You hate change!" or "You're afraid of change!" This is like "It's for kids/little girls" as an excuse for FIM's too many shortcomings or "older male bronies stole FIM from little girls" to discredit the impact of the brony community (both of which I'm seeing way too

The vile "manchild" slur

I posted a status ranting about it, so I'll say it again here.   According to Wikipedia:   One word I absolutely hate its guts is "manchild." I've hated it since I entered this fandom in 2011, and I've grown to hate it more and more. Although it doesn't have the stinging power of "autism" or "retard," it's no less bigoted. "Manchild" is inherently an ad hominem attack; instead of attacking the argument, you're attacking the person on a really deep level. The second you use "manchild," you'r

A response to Mr. Enter's YouTube account termination (Update!)

Author's Note: As of Monday, January 26, Mr. Enter's YouTube account has been revived. With that, comments here are locked.   As many of you already know, cartoon reviewer The Mysterious Mr. Enter had his account terminated last night courtesy of multiple copyright violations from Viacom (the main corporation responsible for managing companies like Nickelodeon). He had one review taken down two days ago, and then YouTube vacuumed up his account, hitting five total videos with copyright strike

One bridge to MLB's early Live Ball Era left

The 1920s and 1930s are among one the greatest eras of baseball. The New York Yankees had greats such as Babe Ruth, Lou Gehrig, Joe DiMaggio, and Bill Dickey (including Murderer's Row). The Detroit Tigers and St. Louis Cardinals were prepared to make runs for championships. The Cubs were still relevant. Walter Johnson slowly ended his career. The Hall of Fame opened in 1936 with five of the greatest of all-time elected.   But one thing the 1920s and '30s have in common is how no player is able

The one that came closest is Vinyl Scratch, but it was brilliantly executed.   How? Look at the images below.

Click here for Part 3.   Weaknesses   Forced exposition in the prologue.   One of the golden rules of telling a really good story is "show, don't tell." Too often, this show tells a lot of exposition, particularly in some of the worst episodes like Daring Don't, Bridle Gossip, Rainbow Falls, and MMMystery. Two of the more popular ones, Maud Pie and A Canterlot Wedding, were really burned by how much the chara

Author’s Note: This is Part 1 of my Rainbow Rocks review. Click here for Part 2. Click here for Part 3.   It's no secret that I hate this spinoff.   Back when newer details emerged out from the leaks, my blasé opinion of it turned incredibly negative because, as a feminist, it went completely against the pro-feminist values of the show, Lauren Faust herself, and My Little Pony as a franchise. (I'm surprised how I didn't get angry over Flash Sentry at the time, which is different compared to

IDW's Equestria Girls Holiday Special 2014 Review

If you wanna read the comic online, watch the video. Be careful, the RR music that plays in the background can get loud, so mind the volume in your earphones. Like what I wrote here, FIM's IDW comics are an innate source of controversy. One of the latest to the pile — The Good, the Bad, and the Ponies — competes with Reflections as the worst of the worst. Ted Anderson is no stranger himself, yet if just reading his proverbial résumé, he's usually one of the best writers for the series. The

FIM Main Series #25-26: What Broke the Arc?

The FIM comics are an innate source of controversy. Fluttershy's Micro comic was supposed to deliver a moral of ignoring poor-quality criticism that amounts to nothing, only to use a straw character, resolve via poor continuity and a Deus Ex Celestia, and write a moral about how all criticism is meaningless. Princess Celestia's horrendous behavior in Reflections followed by mocking people who dissect and analyze the medium. Of course, Ted Anderson's blatant sexist and racist behav

"Last Train for Christmas" Review/Analysis

After Britt Allcroft stepped down, Thomas & Friends veered into a completely different direction. One of them was abandoning the use of "Christmas" in their stories and instead go with "winter holidays" with the purpose of being more inclusive. Despite a valiant effort, the whole atmosphere was definitely Christmas thanks to the decorations, tree, and Christmas setup with "Christmas" scribbled out. The setup was so controversial, after the fifteenth series, Rev. Awdry's late daughter spoke o

Azealia Banks's bigotry gets exposed even more.

The fact that the rapper used (and defended her use of) a gay slur when bashing Perez Hilton is disgusting enough. Now she stepped out of line even more by calling rapper T.I. a "shoe-shining coon" in a radio interview while bashing Iggy Azalea, too.   For those who don't know what the four-letter C-word means, it's a lesser known racial slur of a black person. In other words, she called T.I. an N-word without literally saying the N-word.   There are ways to criticize people without having t

Oh, how I hate the R-word.

"Retarded."   That word really strikes a chord, doesn't it? As someone who might have Asperger's Syndrome, this word cuts as deeply as using "autistic" as a slur.   If you read my blog attacking the word "autism" as a slur, then you know my feelings. Like "autism," the R-word is an insult that attacks people with autism or people with other mental deficiencies. By calling someone a "retard," you're cutting that person deep in such a way that's indescribable. By using the R-word, you're telli

The new DeviantArt logo is a failure.

Everyone who's seen DeviantArt knows this logo:   Since 2000, DeviantArt's trademark is iconic. You have the "d" and "a" forming what looks like the roof of a house, representing unity and hominess. Despite its angles and changes over the years, it's been rather consistent. Does it look dated? Maybe, but it's a really bad idea to change an iconic logo, because you risk damaging its already established brand identity. Some have worked. The Twitter canary from a simply cute bird to one where

Scaling back for a month

In January 2012, I graduated from a four-year college Summa Cum Laude with a Bachelor of Technology in Communication Design (the graphic design module with bits of entry-level web development and Flash animation). Despite the near-perfect GPA, my search for a graphic design position flat-out sucked, and it went absolutely nowhere. Hell, I didn't even get an interview.   After two-and-a-half years of trying and failing, I decided to pursue a Master's in web and multimedia. I'll still dabble at

Daniel, we all can relate to you.

Mister Rogers' Neighborhood is the crown jewel of family television. Beginning in 1968, Mister Fred Rogers tackled a variety of issues that affect so many people over the years, from war to fear of school to death to divorce. Many of these issues children face are extremely real, and Mister Rogers's sincerity and soothing voice is so welcoming to people of all ages.   The Neighborhood of Make-Believe is a segment of pretending, but they're also not afraid to address so many conflicts. Sequel response to the Ted Anderson drama

Anderson, the writer of the Christmas 2014 EQG issue, took part in an interview here. (It's featured on EQD with plenty of drama.) The most notable part is this:   In other words, Ted Anderson, who was written to be fired by IDW (and an issue I fervently called out upon on here and EQD), is said to still be on the job.   My thoughts?   To say I'm royally pissed off is an understatement. My anger at Equestria Girls is nothing compared to my anger and disappointment towards IDW now.   IDW

A brony analyst's great idea of rewriting Magical Mystery Cure

A while back, I introduced this thread with a rewrite of Magical Mystery Cure, from a self-contained finale to a two-parter. (If anyone has a rewrite concept of any episode or Equestria Girls, feel free to post in my thread.)   On YouTube, while rummaging through a DA commentary section of Magical Mystery Cure being listed as an animated atrocity by one of MrEnter's commentators, I found a comment linking to a user named Looney Brony. In it are two videos called "Let's Make It Better: Magical
