The technology which is retrofitted to Hybrid and Electric cars for autonomous operations is called Google Chauffeur. Google has improved this technology to such an advanced level that the cars in its autonomous fleet have been successfully road tested.
Legal Status: Google has had to lobby very hard in about 5 states to allow for the use of autonomous cars on public roads. States that have allowed the use of the technology on public roads require Google to make concessions and follow rules in the name of safety. Vehicles fitted with self driving technology must be identified as such. "Self Driving Car" decals must be fitted. Self driving cars must be accompanied by an individual seated in the driver's seat in case of malfunction. A manual override must be installed as a fail safe.

Accidents: Self driving cars involved in accidents are investigated by both Google and the State Police in which the incident occurred. The majority of accidents involving Google Chauffeur have been deemed "Not At-Fault". Google has been encouraged to "streamline" the fittings mounted to the cars as most accidents involved people distracted by the vehicles roof mounted laser equipment.

Google Chauffeur: Google Chauffeur has been adapted to account for objects on the road and then react accordingly. Previously, self driving cars were only engaged in the operation of the car not with road safety. Google Chauffeur can detect register and monitor, Traffic, Heavy Vehicles, Pedestrians, and Parked Vehicles. Traffic Lights and Stop signs are also registered. The issue then became that some elements of driving are dictated by human interaction such as right of way. Google Chauffeur can communicate its intent and react to changes accordingly.
