Week of 12/14/14
This is a pretty simple concept. I think people have a tendency to get hung up on certain time periods as being when good music was coming out. Like "oh all that old stuff sucks" or "all this new stuff sucks". This is a massive crock. So here we go with a sampling of a song from every decade that I think is really awesome. There isn't a whole lot of rhyme or reason to this, and these aren't supposed to be the best songs of their decade, just songs I enjoy.
1920s- Bing Crosby and the Dorsey Brothers Orchestra- "Let's do it, Let's Fall in Love"
Originally from the musical "Paris" this song has been covered a whole lot over the years. This 1928 version also contains totally racially insensitive line about "Chinks" and "Japs" for extra WTF
1930s- Duke Ellington, "It Don't Mean a Thing (If It Ain't Got That Swing)
A catchy and very famous jazz song. Somehow this song fails to be racially insensitive
1940s- The Ink Spots "We'll Meet Again"
Personally I know this song best as the one playing as the world enters nuclear-winter at the end of Dr. Strangelove.
1950s- Johnny Cash "I Walk the Line"
An interesting but little known fact is that there have been country songs that aren't godawful. Here is an early song from The Man in Black, Johnny Cash.
1960s- Beatles "A Day in the Life"
A rather melancholy song off of the album Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band, with typical nonsensical Beatles lyrics and lots of whacky experimental studio production.
1970s- Jethro Tull "Locomotive Breath"

Did you know it's possible to rock out on a flute? Well it is. Starts out as a jazzy instrumental and then suddenly becomes really fucking metal. (With a flute!)
1980s- New Order "Blue Monday"
A New Wave classic that has seen a lot of remixes and covers. Sort of goth and moody with a sweet beat behind it.
1990s- Radiohead "Paranoid Android"
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sPLEbAVjiLA
I've always been a fan of really long songs with a lot of different sounding parts, and this is one of my favorites. Includes a totally awesome cartoon with mermaids and S&M diplomats.
2000s- White Stripes "Seven Nation Army"
I love me some of the noisy lo-fi stylings of The White Stripes. Still never figured out if Meg and Jack are siblings or formerly married or both. Maybe I should take the 10 seconds to look this up on Wikipedia...
2010s- AWOLNATION "Not Your Fault"
Has a cute video and a nice sound.
I probably fucked up half these links. Which ones were they? Only one way to find out. Let me know if you find any.
