1985
Following the early death of Soviet General Secretary Konstantin Chernenko, Politburo officials announced that up-and-comer Mikhail Gorbachev would succeed his position as head of the Communist Party. Following the announcement, speculation has arisen over Gorbachev's controversial belief in "Glastnost," as some believe it will push the already difficult relationship between eastern and western powers past its breaking point. Others see reform as necessary in today's increasingly globalized world, and believe that these reforms will only strengthen American-Soviet relations. Only time will tell what the party's youngest-ever leader will accomplish in his tenure as Soviet head-of-state.
