AC Transit worked jointly with Van Hool to test new Hydrogen Fuel Cell buses and currently operates 12 such vehicles. Recently expanding its fleet to include New Flyer Xcelsior XDE 60 Articulated buses to handle the routes with the heaviest amounts of ridership. Fare Collection: The Contactless Card Payment System in Oakland is known as Clipper Card. Clipper Card is used by 17 Transit Agencies in the Bay Area including SF Muni in San Francisco. The common joint fare structure allows people to transfer to different jurisdictions without paying extra and being able to take advantages of transfers. The cards can be reloaded at Walgreens pharmacies.

Innovations: AC Transit is fully committed to Hydrogen Fuel Cell and Solar technology and has voiced its intention to assist manufacturers and furthering this aim. Oddly, older AC Transit buses were not ordered with Air Conditioning, which was at the time seen as an "Option". Older Buses have since been retrofitted with Air Conditioning. AC Transit also connects many of the colleges in the area to the transit hubs for students diminishing the need for the universities to run their own shuttles.
