Staring down her captor, Kaoru has a tense conversation with Jinei. He tells of the legend that Kenshin was, and how he, a former member of the militant squad Shinsengumi became a tool, hungry for blood. Himura sends a letter, informing Sano and Yahiko of the situation, politely asking they stay out of it unless he loses. True to their characters, they head out in search of Kenshin and Kaoru. At the scene of battle, Kenshin arrives. At first Kaoru is happy, but that quickly changes when dhe notices the change in behavior and tone of the hero. The battle is hard to follow, the speed of the killers is enormous. With a concealed dagger, Jinei stabs Kenshin. Sano and Yahiko are searching around the river. As Himura lays in agony, Kaoru calls Jinei a monster. A new approach, Jinei paralyzes Kaoru, in a way that will kill her after so much time has passed. Kenshin is now beyond pissed, and now proceeds to break Jinei's face. His anger possesses him and his eyes turn red, prepared to kill. Jinei becomes a little chatty, and uses a technique to bulk up. A two attack battle proves Kenshin victorious*. As Kenshin prepares the kill, Kaoru breaks the hypnosis and stops the final blow. As Himura runs to catch her, Jinei uses one more move. Dagger in left hand, Jinei commits suicide. As a twist, with his last breaths, Jinei becomes the preacher. Sano and Yahiko catch up and the quartet walk home together.
*unrelated to the plot or essential storyline, we learn where the nick Battosai originates. Himura Kenshin uses the Hiten Mitsurugi style of swordsmanship, but has also mastered the Battojutsu, giving him the name Battosai
