Analyzing Obama's Speech

This is going to be quick, don't worry.

For my AP English class we had to analyze the speech Obama gave recently regarding the gun control legislation being voted against by the Senate. This isn't an attack on him, merely an observation. I really don't like politics so I don't pay much attention to the speeches that politicians give.

I noticed while analyzing this speech that Obama's speeches have no substance. The words are poetic sure, but far from being memorable. No wonder people think he's such a great orator, a first grader would be able to understand what he was saying, in fact I would be worried for anyone that didn't. There's a reason the greatest speeches given earn that title: there is significance in the metaphors they create that inspires people. The greatest speakers and writers do not rely on dramatic pauses and pathos-laced arguments to capture a crowd, instead they rely on their conviction.

Yeah, you can have a lovely, poetic speech, but as a politician you still need to be saying something with your words.

I actually haven't heard this speech of his, but from what else I've seen he tends to skirt the issue and circle around his points.

Woah, hey, didn't even realize whose blog this was. You need to stop changing your profile picture. ohmy.png

You're one to talk. You changed your name and your profile picture, I feel like I don't even know you anymore.

Obama's always been about charisma. It doesn't surprise me that he favours handing down speeches that use symbolism as a tool to capture the hearts/attention of the public. In the ears of a well-educated individual, it's going to equate to meaningless boasting than an actual effort to produce change as his supporters coin it.
