Uninspiring teachers

As most of you might know, I'm a fan of school. Also, as most of you might know, I'm also a fan of maths. But something about Maths class today...just left me feeling bored. Which was strange. Whenever I'm in Maths class, I always feel like doing work. I mean, it's Maths, right? Why would I not do work? It's like the most fun subject ever! For those who do not know me, that was not sarcasm. For those who do know me, that was also not sarcasm.

Argh. Damn you tangents. Anyways, what was I talking about? Oh yes.

So, I began thinking about why I didn't feel like doing any work. And it can't be that I've already know the content. I mean, as long as I get work that helps me expand my understanding of maths(which is really hard to find. Took my Maths Adv. Gen. teacher 2 weeks to come up with said type of content), I'm totally content (That was for you guys!) with what I've got.

But as I was walking home, I think I realized what was the reason as to why I was so unproductive. I think it was because of my teacher. She was just so...uninspiring. Now, don't get me wrong. From what my friends say, she does her job well. She knows what she's teaching and she can communicate what she knows effectively. At least, enough so my friends learn something. The thing is she lacks passion in her voice...like she was tired, and couldn't be bothered teaching us this stuff.

To be fair to her, it was some simple stuff, which for the living day lights of me, my friends did not get.

But, I mean, even if you aren't passionate about the unit circle, at least be passionate about the actual teaching. The fact that you are passing on information, that is quite novel to many of those in that class.

See, I find I need passionate teachers. I need teachers who actually love what they're doing. Who love their subject and teaching their subject. I need them to be interested in what their doing. To get really excited, when kids ask good questions or when kids give answers to hard questions. Simply because they thought outside the box. I need teachers who want the best out of me, and not just the grade.

Now, I can say, I've got a steller set of teachers. For every single subject I love (except Maths Methods) they've all inspired me to go beyond what I'm supposed to go, and just do as much as I possibly can. But because I've got a bad teacher in Methods, I'm just sitting there. Doing the amount of work required to get that A+(which is tiny compared to the amount of work I do for other subjects).

Yes, I know it's sounds a bit high and mighty, saying working and getting an A+ isn't all that great. But it isn't for me, and it definitely shouldn't be for maths (again, for me). So yeah. Learnt a new thing today. Uninspiring teachers don't inspire me to do more work. Who would've guessed, eh?

It's funny though. For my other maths class, my teacher has inspired me so much, that I've already set to work on my textbook for next year. And funnily enough, she's saying to stop that (as a joke). Because if I finish the book this year, I'll be the worst student ever, trying to tell everyone what I know and not letting the teacher...you know...teach.

Just as a fun fact, I think if I was a teacher, I'd be a maths teacher. Maths is something I can talk about, day after day after day, helping people understand how the maths works and not just the formulas.I'd never get tired of it. It's really fun to help people with their maths. I mean, the amount of times I try to "teach" my friends maths has gotten me a fair few "Shut up, Channa!". From both the teacher and the students.

Though this one 15 year old in my tuition class did say I'd be a great maths teacher, and if there's one thing I'm good at, it's living in an echochamber.

I know you're younger than me, but you seem to be hellishly far ahead in... everything.

Have you been through Calculus yet? I recently found out that my school's "good" Calculus teacher isn't teaching the subject this year, leaving me stuck with the "bad" teacher who tries everything he can to make his weekly 200 minutes with you a living hell. I'm probably gonna need a lot of help in the subject... :(

Honestly, school is hellishly slow. But oh well.

I've done calculus, and let me tell you, it lives up to the hype. Though, I'm not sure what you mean by calculus in Canada. If you mean basic power function graphs, and hyperbolas and such, I've done those. Really simple, once you start to see the pattern across the board. If you mean differentiation, I've done that as well. Extremely easy and extremely fun. You'll want to find a graph in everything and differentiate it. I've even had this catchphrase "Problem? Differentiate it!" for the first week I learnt it.

Also, there's anti-differentiation and finding the turning points in functions other than quadratic functions (I know, it's frigging amazing!).

I don't know what's in it yet, although I assume the Canadian Calculus 12 isn't too different from the USA's. I expect to get a course outline in a day or two, after I've gone to my first class.

I keep hearing that calculus can be either that one course that completely legitimizes 12 years of preparatory math to get to it, or that one course which makes you want to set every math book in the world on fire and exile yourself from the subject forever. It all comes down to the teacher you get, and hallway rumour has it that my calculus teacher this year is of the latter kind...

I was seriously looking forward to the subject until I found out who's teaching it. >_<

I'm actually from Australia. Well, from Sri-Lanka, but I have been living in Australia for about 3 years now.

It's definitely the former for me. I mean, when I read my book, I almost shouted "Fuck yes!", when I realized what calculus meant for all my other maths. I did the rocky thing though. Hands in the air. Jumped a bit, I think. Maths makes more sense with graphs, rather than just algebra, thanks to calculus.

Course, algebra is still one of my favorite parts of maths(Partial Fractions, for the fucking win!).

But don't worry! I've had an awful teacher for Calculus (Calculus = Methods, here in Australia). But as long as you can maintain your interest in maths, and try to get some discussion going with your friends about maths, I think you'll love maths this year. I mean, I don't know how many people, that you know, love maths. I've heard they're a rare breed.

Even if you have trouble with it, you can talk to me, and if it's the same thing I'm studying, I could try to help you.

Speaking of bad math teachers......

At least your teacher knows how to teach. My teacher puts most of us to sleep with his lessons. I have learned nothing from him in the past 5 months of school. I just ask my friend for the formula for the lesson he taught, she explains it way better than my teacher does......

Uninspiring teachers.... god, I know this too well... I'm glad I just finished at this college (hoping to start on a new one soon). My automation teacher was sooooooo....... ugh >_>

My teacher made the automation theory so damn boring, while automation actually is an exciting subject... what a shame, really...

Same thing when I had about networking in data & communication... now, he wasn't Danish, and didn't speak Danish that well, but that's not his fault... though, he was very quiet when he was teaching, he didn't say much, and all he did was give us a book to read and a few subnetting assignments... that was it. You (Or well... at least I) don't learn very much from that...

We only had about two practical assignments, and that was to set up a network between two computers a router and a switch, and to make a data cable...
