On upcoming next generation consoles

It is likely that I will wait for at least 3~4 months before I make any decision to buy either PS4 or XBONE. I've learned many times to never buy a product from day one especially when it comes to gaming and considering both are multi-hundred dollar piece of equipments, I would prefer to carefully weigh by decision before chucking that much money out.

When hypes have died down a bit and enough comparisons between two consoles has been made, and there's enough reason to believe that both consoles are stable enough to enjoy the game without worrying about hard-drive or network shutting down due to an internal structural fault, then I will start making decision on which console out of two to buy.

However, it is very likely that I will lean toward PS4 based on the current presentations I've seen from both consoles.

I have little desire to own a console that can perform different things such as TV/Streaming Video etc. I have Galaxy 10.1 tablet that I use for watching shows and videos wherever I want and rest of the entertainment stuff is done on my computer. Furthermore, on watching TV, I stopped watching any television shows 6 years ago because most of them are just uninteresting. I admit that my financial capability is probably better than a lot of people and I do own several computers that I use for different purposes.

I have a bad case of being distracted very easily and the last thing I am interested is being able to do everything on just one thing. I have zero games installed on my computer because of that destructive tendency of mine. Because of that, my personal expectation from both consoles were something that emphasizes mostly on the gaming stuff and so far the Sony's presentation was more in-line with my expectation.

Also, I have little intention to be forced to pay extra for things like the Kinect when I have zero interest on using those kind of features. I'm bit dinosaur on this but my webcams are all collecting dust in my shelf and I don't even carry a camera nor use a camera feature on my iPhone at all. Plus the last thing I want is to use voice feature nor motion feature to enhance my gaming experience. I play games silently and I am perfectly happy with just being able to control everything with hands exclusively. Therefore that extra $100 just doesn't warrant enough justification for me.

On the exclusive game-wise, both have some good games that I am interested in and I do admit that I play the hell out of Halo 4 myself. But does that justify an extra hundred dollars and the confusing and restrictive software ownership policy? I'm not so sure.

The next console generation is a heated debate that I am very passionate about. Oddly enough the debate is different for this generation than most of the previous ones.

It isn't too much about the games, certainly exclusives do play a role, but not as much in our current market when most franchises have gone multiplatform anyway. It isn't too much about processing power or graphics because with the big 2 they are almost equivalent.

No this generation's debate is extra heated and requires more passion from me because its about moral standards. The fear of this DRM take over of the mostly physical console market has been something feared for a few years now. I actually didn't believe that any company could be too stupid to actually go through with it, but unfortunately I was wrong.

For my console decision I could only pick a console I felt I could morally support. I couldn't take part in a new generation if it sickened me. Nintendo seems pretty friendly and I will buy a Wii U eventually... but E3 was the deciding point of if I was going to buy either the PS4 and the Xbox One.

Well, its certainly not the Xbox One because they seem to be blatantly anti-consumer which is something I will not support with my money. Its sad because I rather liked my Xbox 360, but I pawned it off as soon as Microsoft started to turn for the worst this year. I will sadly have to miss out on a few exciting games like Crimson Dragon, Titanfall, and the ever anticipated Killer Instinct 3.

Now for the PS4... Sony did exactly what I felt they needed to do to win my support. Send a clear message saying they are not going to follow Microsoft in this anti-consumer DRM nightmare. If they did not say that on stage I wouldn't have a PS4 on Amazon pre-order as we speak. The only issue I have with them is that there aren't that exciting of exclusive titles. I'm not a big fan of Killzone or Infamous... Knack looks like something more my speed, there is the elusive Last Guardian that didn't make it to E3 again. Most things I am more exited for that showed up to Sony's conference I could technically get elsewhere like Destiny, Final Fantasy XV, and Kingdom Hearts 3.

WOW that comment was longer than I thought it was...

In short, I'm now pro-Nintendo (well always been), pro-Sony, and now sadly anti-Microsoft.

What Sony did in E3 (Regardless of their actual stance on DRM) was very smart by initially only reveal some vague feature about their console and waited until MS revealed everything about their console.

MS probably have played all of their cards during E3 due to the amount of PR backlash they've received after the initial release of information about their console. What alot of people overlook is that Sony still have plenty of cards left in terms of exclusives that they didn't directly show during E3.

We will see how the situation develops, but Sony's presentation on PS4 was well calculated regardless of its quality and has satisfied quite alot of what I wanted from the next gen console. And it certainly seems that alot of people are happy to see them fully capitalizing on MS's multiple PR fiascoes.

The gaming industry is certainly heading into an interesting period.

I've been thinking of getting the Xbox One, personally. Seeing what they have done with it since they announced it the first time, earlier this year, and the exclusive games that will be available for it, makes me consider buying the Xbox One. You can stream on twitch.tv with it, which is, in my opinion, one of the best places for video game streaming. And the upcoming games for it just look gorgeous. The only thing about the Xbox One I don't like is that you have to be online all the time. I don't care much for the used games restriction they have, because I usually buy my games on sale anyways. The PS4 is also pretty impressive and it's a hundred dollars cheaper... so, I can't make up my mind, really. :P
