I don't think CoD sucks.

Hey everypony, today I'm gonna talk about people's misconceptions about my opinion on Call of Duty. Now, I personally do not like the series at all, as there is little to no innovation from game to game, and, in the Modern Warfare series in particular, each game feels like a map pack of the previous one. The fact that it's got an expansive online community, essentially guaranteeing that you'll always have someone to play with, doesn't do anything to sway me because I don't like online multiplayer, preferring to play on the couch with a friend. The only online multiplayer I play is Team Fortress 2, but if there were a way to play that game with couch multiplayer, I would. Now, all this being said, despite the fact that I don't like CoD in the slightest, I don't think it's a bad series. From a technical standpoint the games are very well-made, with cutting edge graphics, tight and responsive controls, and perfectly functional online. The game also does what it sets out to do very well: entertain people. I personally prefer a game that has thought and creativity put into its production, and I love games that are truly art, such as Metroid Prime and Shadow of the Colossus, but I understand that not everyone feels this way, and that some people just want some entertainment, and maybe the sense of achievement of reaching the top of the leaderboard. This is all that Call of Duty is trying to provide, and it succeeds admirably. So, it is a very objectively good series, just not my thing. The misconception is that many fans of the series think I'm trying to say the game sucks. As soon as I mention the fact that I don't like it, whether or not I've already said that they're good games, these fanatics will invariably jump down my throat for "hating" and "saying the series sucks." They claim that my standards are too high, or that I'm just stuck-up and trying to prove that I'm "sophisticated." It's really annoying. Some people have all-out ranted on the fact that it's not supposed to be deep or have artistry to it, when that's the point that I myself was trying to make. Some people just need to be a bit less sensitive about what other people's opinions on their favorite games are.

It's not the game itself that most people hate, it's the fanbase. They commonly employ cheap tactics and cheat, and are as rude and obnoxious as humanly possible. Every MMOFPS will have a bit of that, it's inevitable since humans are involved, but CoD takes things to an unprecedented low. And that's the only reason I ever hear anybody hating on Call of Duty. They're rarely complaining about the games beyond the lack of original content, but they're always going on about the lousy community of players.

1) While technically it looks pretty good(there are games which blow CoD out of the water, fidelity wise),aesthetically it makes me puke. Just an opinion, but talking to most gamers, they agree that the aesthetic isn't all that amazing. And tight controls are something I expect from game of AAA games, especially CoD and other annual titles.

2) Yes, but it's the worst form of entertainment. It's the whole achieving system that drives people and not the gameplay itself. The gameplay isn't all that satisfying. I mean, do you really care when you kill someone? I've seen people just shoot and walk unfazed. So while it is entertaining, it's this brain dead sort of entertainment, sort of like when you build large structures in Minecraft, that aren't all that complicated. I mean, sure.

4) It does achieve what is sets out to achieve. But it doesn't achieve all that much. I mean, it's a mediocre game at best.

3) Really, I'm just annoyed that it's bi-annual and it doesn't innovate, and the consumer still buys into it. It's telling Activision "Hey! You can make shit games and get away with it, as long as the brand is recognizable." It just gives us shitty products, which is the problem.

I don't care that the game is good or bad. It's just the effect on the industry and it's developers.

Also, the first few CoDs were really good. The campaign was actually fairly decent, if I remember correctly. That's why I think CoD sucks. It's a heartless monster. I'm sure it can be reinvigorated, and maybe Black Ops 2 could give a comeback, but I'm skeptical to say the least.

I really just find it boring and repetitive to be honest. Theres just too many shooters out in general nowadays, I've completely lost interest in just about all of them

I just don't like it 'cause it's not really my style of game. I'm a bit more of a retro gamer. I freakin' love me some 16-bit/32-bit sprites.

Of course I do enjoy a good amount of modern games (excluding CoD), but I'm still a retro gamer at heart.

I agree. Sharp graphics are nice (cutting edge I'll admit was poor word choice) but that really can't compete with games that work with their limitations to make it look nice, like Okami, V-Joe, Wind Waker, TF2, etc etc etc. Like I said, I personally don't like the series at all, the original concept wasn't really all that innovative to begin with, and each new game is completely content to just give the previous installment some extra maps, new weapons, and nicer graphics and pose as a new game. It's frankly sickening. I just wanted to make the point that I understand that the games aren't terrible when viewed objectively, and that the fact that I hate them doesn't mean I think they suck on their own merits; they suck according to what I expect out of games, but I tend to have high standards anyway and frankly might place a bit too much value on artistry.

That's really cool, I personally am a huge fan of sprite-based graphics. Way I see it, nothing will ever look nicer than a well-done 32-bit game. That said, I do consider my favorite modern games to be better than my favorite retro games, and there are some series that I love the modern titles of but just am not really a fan of the retro installments (Legend of Zelda comes to mind. I can't think of a game that came out after Ocarina of Time that I don't love, but I'm just not too big a fan of any of the games before, except the original and Zelda II: Adventure of Link. Another great example is the Metroid series. I adore the Prime games, but I don't really like the original, and while Super Metroid is great, it just doesn't really do the trick for me. I like Metroidvania style exploration, but not in a 2d environment. If I'm going to put forth all the effort of exploration myself, I want the world to feel fleshed out and involving, which I just don't really feel like the 2d titles did very well. I like em and all, but I just prefer the Prime games.) But, still, retro games rock, even if I prefer modern games like Metal Gear Solid and Shadow of the Colossus.

Yeah, same here, the only shooters that I bother with are the Metroid Prime games (those aren't exactly shooters anyway, much more focused on exploration) and TF2, because TF2 actually bothered to do something new and frankly awesome. I guess you could maybe count Metal Gear Solid and Ratchet & Clank in there as well, if you wanted to look at it like that, and maybe even Splinter Cell, but I don't really consider any of those three games to be shooters personally.

While the community are absolutely terrible, I don't really take the community into account when I judge games, I prefer to focus solely on the games' merits, independent of my opinion on the people who play them.

I seem to be the few people on these forums who likes (Or actually loves) the CoD games. MW3 was, of course, a let down, but I still play the other titles, mostly MW2, CoD4, and Blops. Mah biggest problem is that the devs, knowing how much douchebags the community has who will exploit anything they can, won't fix problems that will limit the amount of annoying or OP setups. However, Blops II seems to be taking that into great consideration, and I am VERY much looking foward to it :)
