Good music?

Fragilistic

blog-0063826001382946220.pngFirst things first, I'd like to say hello. I'm a new face so you guys will have no clue who I am. I'd like to spread my name around so that people would find me familiar. Enough back talk, to my rant.

We live in a generation were nothing seems to make sense when it comes to music. Everything now revolves around popularity, and media. A world where now our personal taste and opinions on curtain music doesn't even matter anymore. Only to clog in a shell amongst friends who will criticize, and judge you over the taste of music one has. What happened to the days where MTV actually played good music? Where's the days MTV, or any other music networks, broadcasts, radios played good music? Not overrated smug for money. Jay-Z? Lil Wayne? Skrillex? Drake? Wiz Khalifa? Miley Cyrus? 2-Chains? Waka Waka Flow? Big Shawn? BLASPHEMY!! What happen to music that actually had meaning? Where's the lyrics that was written with actual feeling? Everything now depends on loud booms and "sick beats".

I brought up this topic cause I've got a few colleagues who give no respect to older music. Only being brained washed from the dirty waters we call modern day music. Don't get me wrong. I love the few songs that are being published today, but they don't get enough publicity. They are only to be topped by popularity and hype. Every where I go, from radio stations to music networks, they play the same overrated music we all know. From Gangnam Style to the new hit single The Fox. I seriously don't get how music like these get the hype. What has our world gotten into that music like this is actually "inspiring"?

This might not matter to anyone, but I only wish to say what needed to be said. I hope other people agree with me here. I hope not to offend anyone. I hope I'm not pushing it but I'd like to ask a fellow brony, what do you think of our current state of music pandemic?

Oh, here we go again.

Our music is fine. It's just different music tastes and all. Sure, there is some absolutely terrible stuff out there singing about drug use, etc, but they aren't usually the popular ones.

I'll just say you didn't get the concept. The article doesn't talk about personal preferences on music.

Oh god...

Personally, I think it's fine nowadays. I don't listen to pop or rap music that often, which is where most of the "awful" songs come from. The only old music I actually listen to is Classical music. :T

There's just more variety nowadays, which is why I prefer this generation's of music to the older ones.

Old music and new music both have their good and bad points. You can't say that both ages of music are terrible nor can you say that they're both perfect.

Each era of music has terrible songs whilst there are an equal number of songs that are great.

This era has had Sigur Ros, Mumford and Sons, Florence + The Machine, Daughter, Coeur de Pirate and in my opinion, Ellie Goulding.

The past era has had great names like Queen, Cyndi Lauper, Blur, Gary Numan and The Human League, once again, this is in my opinion.

It's just that due to the internet and social media, bad songs are much more easily published and people find a comical value to them.

Also, Skrillex is not smug. People throw the dubstep label on him and then everyone pounces because he apparently popularised that genre even though that is not his genre, he's electro house. Skrillex has done a lot of production for a lot of bands like Bring Me The Horizon and also Ellie Goulding. He also started off in a post-hardcore band called From First To Last.

Saying that an artists music has no meaning is one thing, but calling them smug without reason and bashing on them just because you dislike their genre or style is just awful.

Dude, half the music in the 80's was shit. Plus, 99% of the good music from back then wasn't even popular. Personally, I think there's more good music today than there ever was decades ago. Most of my favorite bands are either from the 90's or newer. I listen to everything from black metal to J-pop because I don't just blindly trap myself in a corner.

Well, you know, not everything is like that.  The balance between deep, meaningful music and simple-minded, party, "have fun" music really isn't so blown-out-of-proportion like you're thinking it is.

Sure, most of the big names usually sing more of the simple-minded songs and they get a heck of a publicity, but that doesn't mean people still aren't listening to meaningful music.  In fact, pretty much everyone I know listens to a mix of the two.  If they have music player they'll quite often have a few hundred songs - sometimes even thousands - and I assure you that they aren't all senseless tunes.

And I really need to point this out - NOT ALL "GOOD" MUSIC IS OLD, AND NOT ALL "BAD" MUSIC IS NEW.  There were a hecka tons of boring or just downright awful music decades ago, and such songs are also still being produced now.  The same goes for attractive music.  If one thinks otherwise they're not looking hard enough.  Everyone will hear what is played everywhere, but are massive collections floating around the internet that aren't so mainstream.  If one just looks they will find a lot of music that'll suit their tastes!

Ex. A site that I use to hear some unheard-of modern artists is http://www.earbits.com/.  There are all kinds of genres in there and all of them are pretty decent - though I strike gold every so often c:

I also found some beautiful voices through tumblr and youtube - Vienna Teng and Regina Spekter among several - and those sites are pretty popular too so people a lot will end up finding a bunch of meaningful music every now and then without looking for it.

I said, and quote "I love the few songs that are being published today, but they don't get enough publicity"

I just think the media are giving to much credibility for music that are not even "good". Not one day I can go without watching TV or the radio and hear about Justin Bieber or Nicki Minaj.

Yeah I know what you're talking about, a few years ago a song was released here, It was foul, crude and disgusting but everyone at school listened to it and it was all over the radio and if you listened to anything else you'll get mocked and discriminated. And so it continues with that type of music and everyone.

Who cares about the media? 85% of what I listen to is underground.
