planning (Placeholder Title) A Duty to Freedom
Jeddaven replied to Jeddaven's topic in Everfree Planning, OOC & Discussion
We are getting something out of it, for sure. Equestria is ripe with resources. And, well, that is part of the point. The ponies know humanity can save them, but that it will come at a price. They are, after all, supposed to questions the humans and perhaps even some will dissent against us. In regards to technology, I wanted to keep it modern, near-future, or sci-fi for the purpose of emphasizing what humanity has accomplished with its technology. That's not to say that old technology was not impressive for its time, but that would put us at a technological level close to ponies. I want advanced technology because it emphasizes the following: "Any sufficiently advanced technology is indistinguishable from magic." Humanity will be accomplishing things with technology that appear fanciful to ponies. I will avoid typical high sci-fi, though, so you won't be seeing stuff that is overtly ludicrous. And that's the same reason that the humans will not be using magic. It utterly marginalizes their technology if they have it. I want the ponies to see the humans as something they think to be impossible - a species that not only survived, but thrived in chaos and without a single instance of magic. We had to fight for our survival, because that was oftentimes the only thing we could do. Even in situations though to be unlivable to ponies, we stood up and lived. We made our harsh world our own, through hard work, study, and perseverance. We've been attacked by hostile forces many times, and we always survived. Equestria is like a candle in the dark for us - friendly, pacifistic aliens. A gem of a planet with resources in abundance. There are greedy reasons for us to help the ponies, but also genuine ones. -
Loving the looks of this. Would love to play a soldier/agent with powers.

1. That was my initial plan. 2. Well, it's not just that, but also that freedom sometimes comes with a price. The point of the humans is to emphasize how important is for a species's survival. That's why, when the humans come, it's going to be a mix of nations and cultures. The US, Canada, Europe, China, Japan, India, the whole shebang. 3. Well, uh, diamond would actually make rather awful armor due to the fact that it can be easily cut along certain point, but, that aside, the humans themselves are going to have to be rather advanced to make a difference against the hostile ETs. Their weaponry will be relatively frightening, too, at least from the PoV of the ponies. The humans aren't supposed to seem totally goody-goody when they arrive; they will look like that have done plenty of horrible things alongside kindnesses. They've seen quite a lot of suffering, and they know how to handle it. -

I've had an idea brewing for a while for a particular MLP roleplay, which, in my opinion, is rather atypical for most MLP roleplayers, thus the reason I've made this thread. Onto the current plot summary: (I was inspired to create this roleplay by the late Ronald Reagan's "We Must Fight"/"A Time for Choosing speech". For the sake of reference, here is a link: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qXBswFfh6AY) First and foremost, this roleplay does center around humans, though ponies (and the various other sentient/sapient species of Equestria will play very important roles. Keep in mind that this is a very rough draft, and some aspects of the plot will require refinement. Equestria has always been a place of harmony, love, and friendship. Though they have faced many villains, for the most part, they have yet to experience the horrors of total war or even have the ability to fight a war that is limitless in its rules. When they are faced with an enemy that threatens and shows willingness to destroy Equestria entirely, how would they fight back? Would they even be able to? When their ideas of harmony come crashing down upon them, and they are clearly losing, they are faced with two choices: die free while fighting a war they cannot, or live as slaves. When Equestria is faced with a war it cannot win on its own; when the price for their freedom is one they cannot pay on their own, a friend appears to teach them why freedom is something that must always be cherished and why it is something that defines what it means to be alive. This benefactor is humanity, a species that has faced many hardships throughout its existence; a species that would, for the most part, live and die for their freedom. They would even die for the freedom of others, simply because they believe that is what is right. In Equestria, humanity may find its first friends it will meet in the vastness that is space. In humanity, the myriad of peoples living in Equestria will learn the meaning of spirit, duty, and freedom. They will that, sometimes, there is not an easy way out; that freedom is something people may have to die to preserve. Aaaaand that's the more interesting version of the summary. In essence, for the roleplay, Equestria is attacked by a vicious force that will only be satisfied by total slavery or total destruction. The human race wants to protect Equestrian freedom, at the cost of warfare and lives like Equestria never though possible. In order to save its freedom, the people of Equestria will be forced to commit previously unthinkable acts and sacrifices most of them never though possible. Now, here's what I need to work out: 1. Who should the enemy be? Should they be hostile aliens? Unholy magics and beings? 2. Does this idea even seem interesting to you? Why or why not? 3. How advanced should humans be? I was going to place them at a near-future to moderate sci-fi level of technological advancement (in essence, GDI from CnC all the way to the Federation), but I am open to suggestions. -

1. I should've addressed this earlier, but I guess I should probably consider making a second version of my backstory that excludes connections to the Mane 6 entirely, and I think I will change his name to radiant prism. 2. I've thought about it a bit, and I guess I now have some more solid reasons for him to distrust Celestia and especially Luna, namely, Luna having been Nightmare Moon at one point, and Celestia having put her trust in her sister so quickly after she had been the aforementioned villain. Distrust by extension, I guess. 3. Another thing I should mention is that the RP I created him for is very strongly bared on PoorYorickDA's Equestria divided. The character in question is one of Rarity's more obsessive lovers (out of many, mind you, so nothing special in the context of the RP). He joins a party of the other characters who have been called to a certain village by voices in their dreams because the aforementioned voices promised him a way to free Rarity from a curse than turned part of her body into living crystal and because the voices promised him a way to prove himself to her. In essence, to finally realize the desire for her he's had for so long. Whether that will actually happen or not is something I'm unsure of. Further detailing his personality profile, though, he's very particular about who he interacts with since he's a generally cautious pony, but, at the same time, once he's dedicated to something, he gets -very- dedicated to it. That, and while he is a relatively shrewd businessman, he's not immoral or a villain by any stretch of the imagination. On the D&D alignment scale, he's neutral, leaning good.

Well, this is what I have so far in the backstory. Oh, and in case anyone is wondering, I'm writing him up to season 2, since that's when the RP he's for takes place. I plan to use him otherwise, though, so he doesn't normally have any actual relationship with Rarity to speak of unless he's in an RP that calls for it. Background: Shining Prism led a fairly cushy high-class life, sent to only the most prestigious Unicorn academies. He was spoiled almost constantly by his parents, though he often found much more interest in his studies than the wealth of toys and trinkets his parents showered him with since birth. It only fit him that he was so, as he was a very skilled spellcaster;a prodigy of sorts. When in the academy, as a child, he quickly began to become jealous of a certain unicorn named Twilight Sparkle. From what he heard, she pretended to be unable to hatch a dragon egg, suddenly did so, was accepted into the academy, and quickly became Celestia’s apprentice, a position which was rather prestigious in the world of spellcasting. What Shining Prism saw it as, though, was a series of purely lucky events that lead to Twilight Sparkle jumping on the fast track to magic power and ability. His parents were still incredibly proud of him, though, and only encouraged him to follow whatever path he would find the most productive, useful, and suited to him. As his father always said, “Never tell someone to do something they can’t, when someone else can. It’s a waste of everyone’s time and bits. Ponies have Cutie Marks for a reason.” Once he had graduated from Celestia's Academy for Gifted Unicorns, he immediately entered to work of magic-related sciences and technology, spending additional years apprenticing under a number of court wizards and inventors, only serving to further his knowledge and skills. Early after completing his apprenticeships, he struck out to Manehattan, and started his own business as an inventor and purveyor of magic technologies. Shining Prism's business boomed along with his wealth, much like his father's. He quickly became wealthy and relatively famous within the field(s) of technology, biology, and magic, though he always held a strong disdain for Twilight Sparkle - believing that the sole reason she was so skilled was because she was coddled by Princess Celestia, whom he never believed to be terrible powerful due to her recent string of defeats; he never fully trusted or respected her or her sister, Princess Luna, though he believed that they (usually) had the best interests of their ponies (and whatever else lived in Equestria in mind. In most cases, that is. Being as wealthy as he was, Shining Prism found it rather easy to get a ticket for the Grand Galloping Gala, though he honestly found the entire affair to be boring, and only attended to establish connections and some political ‘oomph’ in the Unicorn upper-class. That was until, while at the Gala, he heard an angelic voice behind him. When he turned, he laid eyes upon the most beautiful sight he ever saw. A single, female unicorn - her eyes like the finest sapphires, her coat white like the newfallen, powdered snow, her flowing mane lavender and fragrant just like the very plants themselves. She was, in his mind, the most alluring of perfections, and all it took was but a single glance. In a near-instant, Shining Prism had fallen deeply in love, but, before he could greet the beauty, she had left on the forelock of Prince Blueblood, but Shining Prism would not allow himself to be defeated. He put everything he could muster into expanding his business, if only to better impress Rarity.

Lately, I've started writing my first real pony OC (a male unicorn, to be exact), but I can't really seem to get my word count past 600 words. I sorely need a more experienced OC writer here, to help me expand on my character's history. Oh, and assuming I'm allowed to, I am willing to provide payment.

Everyone's chars look fine so far, except for Fireblaze and Redstorm, since your links are dead. Oh, and I have to go on a mandatory camping trip until Friday afternoon, so I can't post the thread(s) ntil then. -

Will do, and, speaking of Fluttershy, her newfound friendship with Discord will make her quite important to the plot. I'll PM all of those who are interested in the thread with a link to it, once it's up. To be honest, they'd need a damn good reason if they want the public to support military action against colourful cartoon horses/mythical variations thereof. Hopefully people aside from me will have enough sympathy for their own species to even out the number of humans to ponies. -

I'll probably allow canon ponies and/or humans assuming people can do them justice. In other words, the expectations will be higher for canon and important characters. I used to be a newbie once. Trust me, it's quite alright. -

(Note: The title is a placeholder/work in progress) Lately, I've been planning to write a fanfic based around a hypothetical human invasion, but, since I don't have the time to dedicate to a fanfiction of such length for the time being, I thought a roleplay on this forum might be the best way to go (The aforementioned fic being discussed here a while ago http://mlpforums.com/topic/64072-human-invasion-fanfic-writers-block-plot-issues/#entry1573870). As you can guess, the plot is very much a work in progress, but I've already established a few key points: 1. The humans are in a very tough spot, likely due to a lack of resources, space, or some kind of catastrophic disaster. The only reason they are invading Equestria is because they have to. 2.Magic doesn't work on Earth or things from our universe, except in the case of things created by magic, including blasts of energy and whatever else. 3. Discord can really only be killed by humans in our universe, or by attacks he cannot or did not predict or protect against. 4. The royal guard is primarily ceremonial in nature, although they are trained to fight, and are the only real military force that Equestria possesses. Still, the royal guards and whatever militia the ponies whip up will generally be woefully under-equipped to fight humans, and they'll primarily rely on powerful individuals such as the Elements of Harmony, the Princesses, and Shining Armor, for defense. 5. Players can play as either human or pony, or whatever else exists in/on Equestria. 6. The roleplay will take place in the relatively near future, if not in a sci fi-ish era. 7. Ponies will generally be astonished by human technology, whether in a curious, angered, or frightened manner. 8. The humans are not evil. They're more than willing to take surrendered ponies prisoner Thoughts? Questions? Comments? -

Human Invasion Fanfic (Writer's block/ plot issues)
Jeddaven replied to Jeddaven's topic in AK Yearling's Writing Resources
I don't so much as want Discord to be invulnerable as much as I want him to be a huge thorn in the respective sides of the humans. One of the advantages the humans will have, though, is that they're more worried about keeping the resources they need intact than they are the populace of Equestria, especially since overpopulation is one of the things that drove them to Equestria. The ponies, on the other hand, have one home and one home only. They can't go all-out. Plus, since the RP is taking place in the near-future, the humans might even have access to fusion explosives, plus thermonuclear weapons, so the threat of poisoning the living hell out of what they want is much less, although they'll only really have to use weapons of that level if they're in a -very- bad spot. Otherwise, though, AoE weapons like the MOAB, FOAB, various thermobaric weapons, and even high-yield conventional explosives are probably going to be the big trump cards the humans have, along with standoff weapons and missiles/artillery in general. The humans are going to have a very massive range advantage over the ponies, especially if they're using hypersonic missiles/bombers by the time this 'war' happens. Hell, chances are that the lasers that they're testing against UAVs and railguns might even be viable for military use by then. As for Medusa and the like, I could probably explain why she hasn't been seen yet (or something else that is used) by saying that she was previously imprisoned in Tartarus. The humans might even have an advantage in getting past Cerberus and whatever else because they know their weaknesses, too (assuming they're very much like in Greek myth). Additionally, going off of your prior theory that the ponies aren't generally very trained in the art of warfare (even Shining armor and the Mane 6, even though they've fought villains and can clearly fight, I've yet to hear that they've seen the horrors of war), they'd probably be very easy to scare and intimidate. Even machinery that they've never imagined before, like fighter aircraft, naval craft, and tanks, could be very frightening to any one of the ponies. If you've seen "Apocalypse Now", there's a scene where US troops in UH-1s use "Ride of the Valkyries to intimidate North Vietnamese villagers and Viet Cong by playing it during their assault. Although I'm not suggesting the human military forces play intimidating songs en-masse (unless that happens to be a good idea), propaganda, visual demonstrations of the more powerful human weapons, and other similar things (plus the stuff I mentioned before) could be very good at demoralizing or even routing such a poorly trained military force.- 11 replies
