Huh. That's a stumper, that is. I agree with the others who have posted already, it doesn't quite match any known characters. The white pegasus + yellow star cutie-mark makes me think of the European-issue Starshine: but Starshine is very definately supposed to be one of the Rainbow ponies, so doesn't have a solid blue mane. There was a limited Dutch-release Star Pony for a white body with a blue mane and a slightly different star-based cutie mark: but that's not a pegasus. Of course, there's also the problem that it might even be an early G3 art style, rather than G1, but I still couldn't find anything in that set. The Starshine there is still a Rainbow pony. I can't even find the slippers themselves on any merch site for a clue. Was there any packaging that came with them? Anything written on it might be a clue to narrow it down.

Did You Ever Watch Generation 1, 2, 3, or 3.5?
Fhaolan replied to best poni's topic in Classic Generations
Technically, no. There was a *second* Gen 1 show called My Little Pony Tales. Gen 2 didn't occur until a few years later, and it didn't get a show. The ponies in G2 had a very distinctly different appearance, being far taller and thinner. They had comics, toys, and a video game, but no show. My Little Pony Tales had a completely different *setting* from My Little Pony 'n Friends, as it was a modern-like setting rather than a pseudo-historical one, but the character designs were very much Gen 1 ponies.- 183 replies

Taking that flyer in account, the EQG versions of those characters are in High School, as they are in the Yearbook Club and only students would be referred to by their first names in an 'official' flyer looking for Yearbook submissions. Supervising teachers would still get honorifics like such as Mr., Ms., etc. even now-a-days. Which probably means those versions of the characters are not the precise ones from G1, as those were children in what seemed to be the 80's in that world, and Equestria Girls appears to be set in the 10's, 30 or so years later. If it's the same world, the G1 Megan would likely be in her late 40's at the time of EQG, while Molly in her early 40's, and Danny somewhere in between? Honestly, I've been racking my brain trying to think of, from what we know of those characters, what would they end up as in the Human world? And my answer keeps coming back, why would they? At the end of the TV series, they were pretty much in Ponyland full-time. They didn't have *time* to go back to the Human world to finish their education and go on to Human careers. They were fully occupied just trying to keep Ponyland from being destroyed by the threat-of-the-week. I think the characters even mentioned at one point that whatever was happening in Ponyland was more important than anything in the Human world for them, but that might have been one of the G1 comics...

Did You Ever Watch Generation 1, 2, 3, or 3.5?
Fhaolan replied to best poni's topic in Classic Generations
From what I remember at the time, Newborn Cuties were web-only episodes done in Flash, which was still relatively new. It was... something, that's for sure. Especially since only about a year or so later, Friendship is Magic came out, from a different studio but also using Flash as the primary animation tool. The stark difference in animation quality does a lot to show that the tool itself was not the limiting factor, but more likely the time and effort (re: money) thrown at the project. It's a lot like the silly 3D MLP animations that I myself produced in Blender. They're not good, but it's not Blender that's the problem, it's the fact that I'm not really an artist. I just muck around with tools and see what I can do with them.- 183 replies

Did You Ever Watch Generation 1, 2, 3, or 3.5?
Fhaolan replied to best poni's topic in Classic Generations
Nope. G1 had *two* animated series, My Little Pony n' Friends (1986), and My Little Pony Tales (1992). A lot of people mistake the second series as being G2, because it was set in a modern world unlike the first one which had the ponies live in a pseudo-historical fantasy setting. While the art-style of the two series was slightly different the silhouettes of the ponies were all definitely G1. The G2 toy line started in 1997, five years after they stopped making My Little Pony Tales. G2 *did* have non-toy media, but it was all comics, computer games, and the like, not animated tv shows. The G2 art style and characters are *significantly* different from G1. The ponies are all tall and slender compared to the G1 more rounded and blocky look. For some reason most of G2 was distributed in Europe and South America, and didn't have much inroads in North America.- 183 replies

Could a location like this fit into the setting of Generation 1?
Fhaolan replied to Jerry246's topic in Classic Generations
The *concept* of a floating city would work in G1. I have extremely vague memories of European G1 MLP comics having something like that, but I can't pin the memory down enough to find the instance I'm thinking of. Early MLP had a *lot* of content in Europe that North America never saw. If you look at just the first G1 TV special, Rescue at Midnight Castle, especially looking at the backgrounds for Midnight Castle itself. then it would need a bit of simplification to the art-style but not really that much. They kinda went wild with that first animation and put *far* more effort into Tirek and his environment than you would think. Anything *else* in G1 though, and the background/large object art-style simplified a lot more to match the character styling. Unfortunately, Miyazaki uses that classic anime styling where backgrounds and large objects are *extremely* detailed, using a lot of panning shots, paper doll animation, or animation layers on-top, etc. to avoid having to animate the heavily detailed paintings. That art-style often doesn't survive the simplification needed to get it to the *average* G1 MLP towns and cities. -
Why do so many of you dislike gens 3 and 3.5 of MLP?
Fhaolan replied to Rarity Paige Belle's topic in Classic Generations
it's not G3 or G3.5 per se. The bit I disliked was the weird webcast that took place right before G4 called 'Newborn Cuties'. It usually gets lumped in with G3.5, but really isn't part of that continuity. Not that G3.x had a great deal of continuity, as that was a generation when they were constantly revising the characters, the setting, the art-style as they went along. That was just the nature of that particular generation of animations as it was more heavily tied to the product line than the others. -
No name mentioned in any of the media I have on hand. Which means it *might* be in one of the many comics/illustrated stories they made for G1, mostly in Europe. There's lots of lore buried in those comics, like the origin of the Twinkle-Eyed Ponies and so on. But I don't have many of those, so I can't say for sure. According to the lyrics of the song the witches sing, the stuff gathered from the plant is spelled 'Phlume', if that matters. I don't know if that was gathered from official sources, but that's what's on the G1 wiki article. My Little Pony: The Movie - My Little Wiki

What's your favorite generation of MLP (FiM DOES NOT COUNT!)
Fhaolan replied to I Love Rarity's topic in Classic Generations
I have to say G1. Especially the original TV special 'Midnight Castle'. The follow-on special, movie, and series didn't *quite* live up to the whiplash bright/dark tone of the first special, but it was still more my taste than the later generations. -
I get really sad watching the G3.5+ Newborn Cuties webcasts, same feeling I got from the *G4* live-action performance.... No, wait... sad isn't the right word. Disturbed? Borderline terrified? Yeah, that's the ticket. Okay, making jokes aside, no, I never felt *sad* from watching MLP. More annoyed at how hard it is to find some of the more obscure entries in the MLP back-catalogue. Especially the old G1 comics which were only done in some European countries for some reason yet are the only sources for worldbuilding lore like the sparkle-eyed ponies and whatnot.

So, I've been out-of-touch for a bit, but I'm still here and still a fan of MLP! I just... had some issues that I had to take care of. I'm recovering from surgery, where they had to pull a chunk of my stomach down out of the chest where it shouldn't have been. Rather uncomfortable.
That all went fine, but now I have to deal with the hard part: everyone coming out the woodwork claiming they had something to do with the surgery and *they* can't go through my medical insurance for some reason but if I just send them a thousand dollars in bearer bonds or some nonsense.... It's amazing what the scammers latch onto. Anyway, I'm fine, and I will continue to post here when the whim takes me.

3.5 is one of those weird situations where it's not really clear *when* it happened. There was the 'Core 7' change when they sliced the number of characters down to 7, then there was a toy art-style change when they became 'bobbleheads', then later the animation art style changed to match that but also all the pegasi suddenly gained butterfly wings (which didn't happen for the toys), and then there was the newborn cuties.... thing. If all of these things happened at the same time, it would be easy, but they happened over a span of years.

Huh. So surprised I haven't posted here yet. In real life, I go by Fhaolan. No seriously. I've been using that screen name since the days of ARPANET, and it's how I usually get introduced to people in real life. I've been Fhaolan so long that it's listed as an official alias. My *birth* name, on the other hand, is Allan Reid Kemp, which is trivial to find out, so I have no issues with revealing it here. The problem, you see, is that I'm old, and I've been on the Internet since the beginning. Long before privacy and identity security became a thing you had to do. I often posted on BBS systems and the like, using both my screen name, and my real name. Over the years, I've put art, stories, research papers, etc. online under both names, and by the time everyone figured out that you could do identity theft, it was way, way too late to do anything about it. Anyone with or without skill could figure out who I was.

Anypony remember "The world's greatest tea party"?
Fhaolan replied to Flew Away's topic in Classic Generations
Without the old patterns, it's gonna be a pain to pull it together. This wanders into the intersection between mascot-style fursuits and puppetry. I mean, it's not the really complex stuff put out by the Henson Workshop and the like, but it's still going to be annoying without patterns. -
Anypony remember "The world's greatest tea party"?
Fhaolan replied to Flew Away's topic in Classic Generations
Yeah, I've been doing cosplay and costumes for decades, and these are unusually structured suits. There's lots of things out there that have *parts* of them set up in similar ways (quadsuits, centaursuits, etc.), but this (and the G4 MLP Live shows from 2011) are the only time I've seen costumes put together this way in their entirety. -
Anypony remember "The world's greatest tea party"?
Fhaolan replied to Flew Away's topic in Classic Generations
I found a recording of the entire play at one point; I can't find it now. It looked like a reasonably good panto-style performance. (Panto is style of English play, where the audience is encouraged to call out, cheer, boo, and sing along with the performers. You don't see it much in the 'states.) It didn't translate very well into a video though as the audience interaction is an important part of the experience. I admit to being a bit distracted trying to figure out how the performers were able to see out of those costumes. There must be eyeholes hidden in the widow-peaks of the manes. Either that or the performers are dead blind and are doing it all by rote. -
What part of the US you think Megan Williams lives?
Fhaolan replied to Steve Piranha's topic in Classic Generations
From Megan's clothing and accent, and the architecture of the human world briefly shown in Rescue at Midnight Castle, I'm figuring Northern California in the 80's. -
I'm a bit limited around G2. Most of it got released in Europe (and South America, supposedly) and never made it to North America, so there were limited opportunities for me. I did try to play the Friendship Garden game a couple of years ago as part of my 'watch all previous generations' blog, but it really didn't want to run very well on my relatively modern PC. Art style-wise, I liked what little I saw. G1 was definitely modelled after specific pony breeds like the Highland Pony and the Shetland Pony, with broad bodies and stubby legs, while G2 moved more towards regular horse proportions. I wish I could get ahold of more of the European comics that were published at the time, to get a better idea of the characters.

Wigwam is derived from an Algonquin word, and members of the Algonquin tribal group did adopt the feather headdress of the neighboring Sioux people in the 19th century. Which is, admittedly, rather modern for a lot of people, but it was still a hundred years or so before that toy was made. So no offense to the quoted person, but they are not as knowledgeable about the customs of those native people as they believe themselves to be.

Here's a site that goes into excruciating detail on cleaning and repair/restoration of vintage MLP toys. A lot of this is usually way more intense than what most people need to do to clean old toys, but it sounds like there are some marks on your toy that need this level. g3/core 7 Why do so many people hate generation 3?
Fhaolan replied to chaosprincess's topic in Classic Generations
G3 doesn't really have 'continuity' as such. The 'shorts' were nearly all packaged with the relevant toys as mini-DVDs or VHS tapes depending on the year the toy was made. The specials were things that showed up on TV pretty much at random. So they were all made to be watched in whatever order you came across them. If I remember correctly, there weren't any specials for G3.5, they were all packaged with toys. Until you got to Newborn Cuties. Those were very weird webcasts that I cannot in any way recommend seeing other than for completion.- 128 replies

general questions Editing my username on Poniverse
Fhaolan replied to Twilight Sparkle97's topic in Site Questions
It is *technically* possible for certain Poniverse administrators (Not MLPForums admins) to change your Poniverse login name. As I understand it, it's not a trivial exercise, and at any given time I think there's there's only one or two system admin-types who know how to do it, so only ask if you are *really* sure about it. If you are that sure, I recommend creating a support ticket. https://mlpforums.com/support/
