  1. I have kinda 2 personalities, the on-stage me that likes attention and adrenaline and the off-stage/social me which is very silent and shy. And I don't think one of these 2 is a "mask" because both are part of my character. So it's definately possible to be both ;)

And I think it's an interessting topic and no reason to banish you at all. And you can have a crush on a character without even thinking about sex. I've had dreams where I kissed or married a pony(I always was a pony too in them I have to say), but never any sexual thought in them(and you can't manipulate your sub-consciousness that produces your dreams) :)

Good use of "mask" terminology, sounds like you're right in the ball park of Jung's "gold in the shadow" theory. Thanks for that, I was just a bit confused with myself and gambled consolidation versus banishment when I posted this. (Which is interestingly, my shadow self. I can take a "leap of faith" because I believe in a higher power, but I don't play with dice or chance.) I envy you somewhat for having such dream recall. I have dreamed of the ponies since I started watching, but my memories are like blurry still-shots, lacking focus or context.

    flutermac just sayin

Those two are MADE for each other.
  2. Iam for example the kind of character described above. And yes I sometimes do self narration xD

But I think your theory kinda works. I have a thing for girls who don't behave that girly(even who are a bit tomboyish) and dorks in RL and my favorite Ponies are Twilight, AJ and RBD. I think they are cute but Iam definately not sexually attracted by them(a kiss and hugs would be most I can imagine). :)

Self narration FTW! (That's actually how I make up the dialogue for my writing.) Hey! The thread is called "Pony Romance" not "Who would you sleep with." If I was able to give Fluttershy a kiss, I would be content. Thanks for posting. I still can't believe I haven't been banned to a moon thread for this!

  3. An interesting thing to consider. Perhaps if a pony went through a massive change in their fundamental personality. Like Pinkie going goth, or Fluttershy becoming a hunter. (Note how these aren't really GOOD changes in personality. Not that hunting itself is bad, but it's definitely subversive to Fluttershy's nature.)

  4. A Celestia centred episode would be interesting.

I think most the ponies act too serious around her, as others have mentioned. Maybe the episode would feature Celestia trying to make friends and failing to do so due to her status as queen princess.

If they did try to make a Celestia episode, she could try disguising herself as a regular pony and befriend Twilight and the other Mane Six. One interesting trick to pull would be to NOT have that revealed at the end. The new pony leaves town with a goodbye and Twilight writes her report none the wiser. (Even wilder, perhaps not even the audience knows for sure up until the end!)

I feel like Celestia might be lonely. Everypony is so intimidated by her, even though she's always so nice to them. Nobody (except probably Luna) can loosen up and just be themselves around her.

I know, I felt so sorry for her. I've met a princess before, and though I tried my best to be respectful, I also tried not to be a stiff. (Though I do understand a bit where they're coming from. I was shaking in my highly shined shoes and her majesty was not a sun goddess!) Maybe the reason Celestia takes a personal protege, assuming Twilight isn't the first, is to have a friend as much as a student.
  5. I agree with BOTH the above. You should love and invest energy in the one you love, but you also want to make sure your efforts are appreciated. For a (very) short term version, see Rarity and Blueblood. Rarity was putting forth all the effort to at least get him interested but he cared for nothing but himself and his own image. Obviously it was one party not a long term relationship, but the idea is the same. I've had one girlfriend so far, I loved her with all my heart and still do. I preferred to spend time with her for the same reason previously mentioned, there's no place more comfortable in the world than in the arms of a woman who loves you. A man, a REAL man appreciates the woman who chooses to spend time with and confide in him.

To me, the term 'whipped' should only really be appointed to either an unrequited relationship, where feeling of affection generally aren't reciprocated by one's partner, or a situation where one particular partner attempts to exploit the others love through means of manipulation and emotional influence.

If both partners feel the same way towards each other, and neither is out to benefit from ones willingness to appease the other (much like the circumstances you mentioned between you and your boyfriend), then there's no real 'whipping' going on, but rather a healthy, mutually beneficial relationship. Many men tend to throw around such terms as a means of persuading their friends to conform to the petty-minded male stereotype of remaining the so called dominant member of any emotional affair, as a means of justifying their own masculinity, which needless to say, is a pretty undeveloped line of thought.

Forget what I said! That's the best explanation right there!

Funny to mention though, up until recently, one could almost say that Spike was "whipped."

  6. It was mine. ;)

I still think the idea is pretty badass. Hay, you even gave the statistics! I always like it when somepony suggests something crazy awesome and actually knows what they are talking about. Brohoof! /)*

  7. A laser/plasma beam thingy wouldn't solve the worlds issues.

But you have a point with the various adjectives you said.

The Orbital Friendship Cannon was not my idea, I was quoting somepony else. Though I do think such a weapon would be awesome (future soldier here), you're right. The last thing the world needs right now is space artillery with "friendship" squiggled on it. My idea was an artificially constructed island, named Equestria. People could visit or even live there!
  8. That plan wouldn't really solve the problem I'm afraid, it would be awesome to make though.

Wouldn't solve anything? A society of enterprising, ambitious, idealistic, creative, and talented individuals is just what the world needs. We'd have cancer cured in a year!
  9. Plans for Orbital Friendship Cannon:

    Either:

Place 32 satellites evenly spread around the world.

Obtain control of existing satellites and move them into position.

Fit satellites with mirrors facing towards Earth.

Obtain powerful laser arrays. (around 5GW per laser) These could be rescued from the laser fusion reactors currently being built. (In California I believe)

Use the satellites to reflect and focus the lasers onto target.

If the intensity is great enough, the air should inonise and become a plasma, even more power should super heat it, making it a leathal force comparible to a star.

The only problem I see is the calibration required for aiming and keeping the air being heated in place until it reaches leathal temperatures.

    Technical info:

isonisation temperature of air (approx, there are many variables to it): 174,408 Kelvin (around 1/10 of the sun's core) source

Intensity of a laser is defined as: Power/Area^2

So assuming we focus the laser into an circle with a radius of .5m, and we have around 500 lasers (each at 5GW)

    We get:

    Area of cirlce = pi * .5^2 = pi / 4

    5e9 * 500 / (pi / 4)^2 = 4.05e12 Watts per meter squared.

    aka. 4 052 847 346 Wm^-2

Currently I'm not sure how much the temperature of the air would increase by, but it's obvious all hate would be destroyed.

    Apparently this relation is true:

P= k * T^4 where k is a constant for the air in this case.

I can't find the value for k at this moment in time, and anyway it will vary with the condition of the air, I'll try to find more information on this latter.

This is even better than my idea of creating an artificial island and calling it Equestria . . . FUND IT!

  10. Welcome to the herd... I'm sure your going to enjoy the slightly stereotypical ways of the ponies... They could almost be called a cartoon sitcom rather than a girls show... Hmm... I don't think it's a girls show anymore anyway... Sure, that's the target audience, but there are probably more men (more bronies anyway, which, since pegasisters didn't take off, 12 years + girls are called bronies too! Since at the age of 12, you're not part of the target audience anymore...) that watch the ponies than little girls... I mean, SERIOUSLY! We're almost a religion, except we have our separate religions anyway!

A religion wouldn't be a bad way to put it. Perhaps a thematic philosophy? The characters embody both vices and virtues we try to learn from and cite often. Just like how one doesn't need to be told about Noah parting the waters to escape the Egyptians, you wouldn't need to explain to a brony that Dash did the Sonic Rainboom to save Rarity. "Love and Tolerance" sounds more like a slogan than an ethos. Bronies seem to just generally promote being civil and friendly. That said, we do seem to place a high emphasis on the value of individual identity and effort. (All our fan made material, BroNYcon, unique pony avatars with individualized cutie marks and even names!)

Wait, you were planning on becoming a brony? Awesome!

I've only seen people start watching the show so they can flame it or to see what all the fuss is about.

I likewise "planned" on becoming a Brony. I heard it was good from TV Tropes, which is where I go to to find new things to read and watch, and looked up the first episode. At the get go though, I thought "brony" just meant an older fan of the show, not this extended network of interconnected fandom. So I guess I can say that I wanted to be a fan, I just didn't realize just what that meant until later. I regret nothing!

Well now you've got like 40 episodes to go, I'm so jealous of you, getting to watch the show for the first time.

You KNOW something's good when the concept of short term amnesia is an exciting prospect! I only recently made my little brother a brony, so I GET TO WATCH THE WHOLE THING OVER AGAIN WITH HIM!
  11. Yeah, alot of people say its Trollesita, but I say she just wants to have fun, but can't because everyone is too serious around her. Wonder if anypony will get that feeling...

It's not exactly subtly put, either. When she visited Sugarcube Corner, she just wanted to get to know her student's friends better. Meanwhile the Cake's were freaking out at the tiniest inconvenience, to her! When Rarity kissed her hooves in thanks (many times) Celestia looked visibly uncomfortable. I think Royal Protocol must get a bit tedious after the second century.
  12. Yes, I wasn't kidding. In Terry Pratchett's Discworld series, Death rides a white steed named...BINKY! Binky is also capable of flying, only he has no wings. Discworld Death has something fundemental in common with Princess Luna. THEY BOTH SPEAK IN CAP LOCK! Death's diolog is always in all capital letters! His human grand-daugher Susan can do it too, but she can turn it on and off at will.

Wow, those two were made for each other!

I love Celestia as a character for what she stands for. Celestia is the sovereign of Equestria in both the deistic and secular sense, but unlike Xerxes (the movie version, not the real one) she is a kind motherly figure instead of an imposing overlord. (That and she's the real deal instead of just claiming divinity.) My take on the *ahem* "alternate character interpretations" of her is that some bronies are suspicious of anypony who commands absolute power, even someone good. It is common in some mythologies for the gods to be corrupt so it could be just a stigma that is hard to shake. Keep in mind that Equestria is a fantasy world, many of which slide towards romanticism, as do many fans of the genre. Historical romanticists were often suspicious of long-standing ecclesiastical institutions. I.e. the Chuch. (I'm Catholic, if it matters, which I hope it doesn't.) Celestia is a one pony church AND an absolute Monarch, you do the math. (Though technically speaking she's now a dual-arch with Luna, but that's a recent development.)

Celestia in many ways resembles a post-singularity character. Which are really hard to portray as benevolent in fiction, though not impossible. See Q and The Doctor. The former being callous and playful, but ultimately supportive of the human race's advancement. The Latter being unequivocally a good guy. Those two get off easy on the audience's trust because they are funny and have a lot of screen time. Celestia is composed, though not a stiff, and we don't see a lot of her. Malevolent god-like beings are easier to understand because, in order to work, they have to be petty enough to care about opposing the mortal protagonists but not actively hostile enough to just snap their metaphysical fingers and end the story right then and there.

An episode revolving around the Princess would be tricky at best, again not to say it can't be done, her nature just has to be treated carefully. Princess Celestia has been around for millenia. (Scource: Luna's imprisonment was 1,000 years ago and Discord said he was imprisoned for eons.) Any attempt at accurately portraying something of such age as an understandable, physical life-form is quite a challenge.

Ultimately though, this is what makes her the archetypal Queen, God, and Mother in the Junigian sense of those words. The Princess has, in many ways, transcended petty mortal vices like envy, pride, and wrath. (Luna got jealous, but she's the younger sister. Of course "young" again in relative terms.) That isn't to say the Princess doesn't get angry. When Twilight abused her magic and caused a riot in "Lesson Zero" she was understandably upset with her student. In contrast, when Fluttershy essentially stole her pet, but otherwise caused no potentially lasting harm, she wasn't even perturbed. Celestia still has emotions, she's just old enough to know WHAT to get angry about. Still, she tries to foster good relationships between her subjects and takes time to understand and walk amongst them. Prime example; when the Smith family came to Canterlot, Celestia could tell they needed a home without them speaking a word of such concerns. What does she do? Give them an entire valley for settling, that's overlooked by Canterlot. Thus, she's indirectly responsible for the creation of Ponyville.

Indirect action, in my opinion, is where Celestia's character shines. (Laugh at the pun if you must. I'll wait.) Celestia's will doesn't need magic to be evident and real. She has so much experience and wisdom that she knows how and what to say or do at the right time to get the result she wants. In the pilot, when Nightmare Moon's return was nigh, Celestia sends Twilight off seemingly unconcerned about her student's warning. When all is revealed however, it turns out Twilight's assigned task of making friends was actually purposeful instruction instead of off hoof advice. You wanna really think about it, Celestia might have recognized Twilight as the Element of Magic from her first day and took her as an apprentice purposefully to free Luna. (Though, comparatively, that's cutting it pretty close to the wire if she didn't already have contingency plan.) Then there is sending Twilight back her Friendship reports when Discord had pretty much won. Celestia gave Twilight the resolve to save the world not by direct words of wisdom but just by reminding her student what was important to her on a personal level. Considering that much of the world is directly effected and controlled by the "mortal" ponies already, Celestia's intangible influence in starting, reacting to, and changing events makes her a better metaphor for God than raising the sun does.

If God, does effect the world in a story, a better way to tell that story is by having Him do it through people! If Celestia just waved her horn to solve every problem at hand, it would damage not only her as a character, but the quality of the show! In past generations of MLP and similar shows, the world is so simplistic and the characters so devoid of negative emotion that conflict is nearly non-existent. The Princess could very well invoke such a reality! She could scorch away the Everfree Forest, and remove failings from everypony's mind, yet she chooses not to. To create such a world, would make her just as bad as Discord, just by imposing absolute order as opposed to absolute chaos. No conflict, no resolution, no advancement. Complete saccharine stagnation! Celestia (like God) understands that people/ponies aren't perfect. That bad comes of free will, but if you are forced into doing good, the action looses it's meaning.

Celestia knows mortals are good at heart, they just need to find their way. As one who's been around long enough to know every roadblock and how to overcome it, she's more than willing to nudge her subjects in the right direction.

Princess Celestia, bronies, she would probably laugh along with the haters and encourage us to as well.

  13. I personally think they are in their late teens or early twenties seeing as they all have jobs and live alone. Plus with custody of younger siblings as is the case with Applejack and Rarity. Their sometimes childish behavior is simply mortal failings. (Haven't we all met people that acted like they were ten?) They were meant to be role models that the girls who watch this show could grow up to be, but also demonstrate that nopony's perfect.

You ever notice how Bronies all think they're 18-25 and most kids think they're teenagers? Gee, I wonder why...

I'd put them in the range of 14 to 15 actually (maybe 16 tops). I just couldn't see characters that are over 20 having to write letters to the Princess about what they learned about friendship.

Unless you go the immortality route. Then they could theoretically be in the 100-200 range.

That's a very cynical way of looking at it. Cynicism! On a brony forum!

    Braeburn: Shame on you.

I do think they're at least 18, but because teenagers don't live by themselves. I'm 20 and I still act like I did when I was 14. (Albeit, that means I'm still an introspective stoic. So I might be a bad example.)

  14. The OP's logic somewhat makes no sense due to the fact I prefer Fluttershy and R.D (I don't know which I prefer over the other) much more than the other ponies. However they're like the opposite of each other. So...?

I don't presume to be 100% correct. My theory was an attempt to explain my own feelings, anypony could be different from what I've said and probably is. I think it is possible for someone to be like both. Somepony could be supremely confident when doing something like gymnastics, motocross, race car driving, or something similarly "extreme" (even doing Rainbow-like self narration), while still being cripplingly shy in social situations. Or vice-versa!

  15. I'm actually not as worried about this as I once was.

-On Wednesday January 11, 2012, Equestria Daily reported its 100,000,000th pageview, and the ticker is still climbing. That's how awesome ponies have become, in just under a year-and-a-half.

-In adition, my friend is an artist who frequents deviantart. She said the day Derpy spoke, there was sketches updated every half-hour of her!

-Star Trek premiered on September 8, 1966, the first convention was hosted in January 1972. Now how long did it take for BroNYcon to become a reality?

-Fan artists like Acoustic Brony and Beatle Brony put out songs faster than some professional bands have in the past.

-The entire creative team, including Lauren Faust herself, have talked to the fans and responded with enthusiasm. The posts Lauren herself responded to have ranged from major topic discussion, to just complimenting fan art, to actually comforting bronies talking about traumatic life events!

-The adobe flash animations, Epic cupcake Time and Luna's Lament could easily be mistaken for episodes in their animation and voice acting quality. (Even if the former, is a parody, it still captures Dash's attitude and Pinkie's manic behavior.) Bearing that in mind, if the show is ever cancelled. It might be possible for a group project to MAKE THEIR OWN!

-According to John de Lancie, "Roddenberry warned me that I had no idea what I was getting into with Star Trek. Someone should have warned me about My Little Pony! Egads!" . . . Bronies out-fanned Trekkies!

The youngest brony will be an old man by the time it dies down, and by then it's impact will have been felt. We will tell our children these stories of how we actually made friends and became better people because of this fandom. We will show them Equestria through the official material and the beautiful creations of our little circle. All in all, I think we're in it for the long haul. What do you think?

    Big Macintosh:"Eeyup."

  16. im impressed that you took the time and effort in going trough al this!

i still dont enjoy the ponies in humanised form for lets say clopping sins it still feels like looking at your sister.

but i've learned that it is indeed the characteristics that is atractive to the people than the character

    ps: i saw a spike reference :)

If by "taking the time and going through all this" you mean "re-state preconceived assumptions" than your welcome. I'm no psychologist, I just do way too much reading and thinking.

Yeah, like I said, not a clopper myself. Which is what I found odd because I shared their enthusiasm, just not that particular way of . . . expressing it. :o

Lastly, thank you so much! I wasn't expecting to get ANY positive feedback, let alone comforting and teaching people!

  17. i think i understand better now what must be going on inside those heads of rule 34 arthists tough i still dont understand then why there are also OC rule 34 characters. are those just from the perverted mind or is there something else going on there?

i do not enjoy rule 34, i think its like seeing your sister i gues.

but i think that seeing them more then just ponies and more like something humans can posses in there caracters, i can see why it is so.

I don't enjoy Rule 34 art either, but I found SOME humanized versions of the ponies quite enjoyable if the artist carried their features over well enough. An odd thing to observe is making them too realistic. It once again plummets to the uncanny valley, whereas human, but still stylized versions don't strike as being out of place in your brain's recognition of the character.

    Take these for example:

    Pinkie-

    http://browse.deviantart.com/?qh=&section=&global=1&q=Human+Pinkie+Pie#/d3ioqnl

    http://browse.deviantart.com/?qh=&section=&global=1&q=Human+Pinkie+Pie#/d48r8f4

    Twilight -

    http://humanized-mlp.deviantart.com/gallery/32801608#/d4mdejh

    http://humanized-mlp.deviantart.com/gallery/32801608#/d4ljt28

See what I mean? If you were to see a perfectly translated pony to human, your brain suddenly sends up neuron red flags marked "not human" because your already familiar with what that character regularly looks like and whatever feature they have that isn't normal sticks out. Whereas the stylized versions retain the exaggerations that make them different but still identifiable as "people." To say there is more behind every clopper's fantasy would be foolish, but to some this is just the case. Another example. When that clip of Fluttershy saying "Mama's so proud." in a somewhat suggestive voice played. Many claimed that Fluttershy had never been sexier or something similar. Others objected because they thought such slander was disgusting, I was among them, but not for the same reason. I was offended, because that wasn't Fluttershy. Without her grace, demurity, and kindness she was just a cruel little creature and not the woman I had feelings for.

As for the OCs . . . I got nothing. *shrug pony*

  18. I've been on waifu threads in /a/. It's not really abnormal in a fandom.

Well that's good to know. I've never heard the term, or at least I didn't know what it referred to. In terms of anime characters, the only one I felt even the slightest hint of a crush was Princess Euphemia, but I always played as Suzaku in my head so I guess I didn't realize the attraction. Then Fluttershy came into the picture and there was no male partner for me to use as a facade. (Cue freakout and subsequent revelation.)
  19. I haven't really seen any posts pointing to sexual attraction (not that it would be wrong, it is just another human emotion), from what people are saying it sounds more like a personality attraction.

For me Rarity's personality is one I would love to find in a human, overly-dramatic, artistic, caring, and a little guileful.

Aspects on my ideal lady indeed. I do admit there is a bit of "hints" my brain is giving me sometimes when Rarity poses . . . or upon reviewing Spike's flashback of Rarity's kiss. (Where were you for me that time, context?) But as I've stated, my brain treats attraction a bit wonky. (Having something close to Asperger's syndrome might have something to do with it.) Demisexuality: Basically I don't experience physical desire unless I'm actually interested in the person themselves. I'm not making this up, at least not the idea. http://www.asexualit...itle=Demisexual

So, as stated in my theory, since the mane 6 do a fantastic job of exemplifying feminine qualities they cause my brain to "take notice". I compare it to the reaction you get when the tomboy cleans herself up for an event and THAT'S when you "take notice." Oh Celestia I'm starting to creep myself out! Feel free to pump those shotguns.

  20. This guy isn't talking about shipping. He's talking about waifus. Having a waifu is perfectly normal.

On the Mass Effect thing, Ashley Williams is quite attractive. For some reason the Tali relationship in the game reminds me of this song:

    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zF4N-lvduG0

    I dunno. Are you?

Waifu huh? I learn new terms everyday with this fandom. If you want to introduce somepony to the Internet without scarring them for life, show them bronies!
  21. Here's all you need to know:

(this post is as much of a joke as SOPA, and SOPA's a joke)

    Fluttershy: *deep inhale* yaaay

That video was great! I got my first girlfriend by being who I am, whoever said "nice guys finish last" died a lonely man.

    I don't think you understand.

You said that you were surprised how tolerant people are, implying that they were accepting of strange things and not insulting them for it.

Which is why I stated that most insults are a joke.

    Oh, sorry. Good point actually.
  22.

Any advice on how I could gain confidence? Because it's really difficult for me and I would really like to be more confident in myself.

Not to put you down or anything, but I find it amusingly ironic that self-confidence is a personal failing yet your avatar is RAINBOW DASH.

I take most insults or the likes as a joke, because most are.

That wasn't meant as an insult.
