  1. I take a sip of my hot chocolate in the moments while my mind comprehends what just happened. Tens of different things I could say go through my mind, but uncertainty keeps me from saying any one of them. I vaguely consider that perhaps we should talk about the mission ahead, but reconsider as I realize I'll have a lot of time looking at it in the observatory. The thought strikes me, though, that this is perhaps the first time a pony has shown this kind of affection to me. I just barely met her, but I like what I know. I start to realize that I really have nothing I'd like to say in response to that. So instead, I get up from my spot across from her and move next to her, sitting rather close, leaning ever so slightly towards her. "I-it's okay." I finally say in response to her blushing. Then, a clear thought penetrates the clouds of mental confusion; "I like you, too. Let's get to know eachother a bit more, shall we? - We'll have plenty of time to talk about the moon mission when we're looking at it at the observatory. Soo, what do you think of a cozy evening in front of a fireplace, reading about astrophysics and sipping hot chocolate?" As I speak, I gesture in front of us with a hoof, as if revealing the imaginary fireplace where the other bench sits, all while wearing a somewhat happy and excited smile.
  2. (It is to my horror and shame that I was not one of the first to reply! >.< ) I freeze and my pupils shrink - for a brief but terrified moment, I worry that I've done this to her on accident somehow. Given an entire second to think, though, my mind registers what is actually happening, and I relax. I put my front hooves out in a hug around her as my ears flop back, and after another moment of hesitation, join in the kiss with a passion that completely surprises me, and quickly lose myself in the bliss with a happy, humming chuckle. (If this continues for more than a good ten seconds, though, I would try gently cutting it off, and sit next to her instead of across from her.) (I also have some dialogue in store, but I wouldn't cut her off so I'm waiting for a moment to speak where I wouldn't have to roleplay her to do it (ie, have her finish up) )
  3. This was early in my researches before I discovered that name. "Terra" is latin for Earth, so it worked well enough. I now have an entire blog dedicated to stuff like this: http://asksciencepony.tumblr.com/
  4. I chuckle a little uneasily, my ears involuntarily flopping down, "Yeah, me too," I say as my gaze turns down and to the side - but only for a brief moment before looking back at her. "Well, uhm... I meant this professionalll...-well, I guess I can't say 'professionally', but, uhm... You can certainly count this as a date if you like. I did bring you chocolates, after all," I note with a glance at the hot chocolate I got her, grinning all the while. "I mean, I know I just barely met you, but from what I've gotten to know of you so far - I like you and wouldn't mind having you as my special somepony - my Hearts and Hooves Day somepony. Not that you couldn't also be my special somepony if you wanted - You're pretty special as far as mares go, you know; not many are into these kinds of things that I'm passionate about - science, astronomy, magic..." I shift uneasily, blushing a little, but warmly and sincerely smiling all the while. I take a big drink from my hot chocolate.
  5. Hah, they drew the rope going out in an Apollo-type trajectory (orbits Earth, then shoots out to Moon coming in on the moon from the opposite side than the side of the Earth that it came from). Anyways, yeah, you kinda have to disregard the comic's moon for anything to work physics-wise, and just stick with the show.
  6. That's really not what he was saying... Whether artificial or natural, any object orbiting another will behave the same way, with the exception that a very large mass will behave very, very slightly differently (I'm talking a mass the size of the moon or so causing a slight wobble in the parent body's orbit as the two orbit the common center of mass) - but for all intents and purposes - pretty much the same. From what I got, it looked like he described a system where the planet would become tidally locked with the sun, and Celestia prevents that from happening, keeping their world habitable, whilst Luna keeps the moon's orbit from decaying due to tidal braking.
  7. Why is moon-glow a problem? Admittedly, the night-side of the moon seems to be reflecting light as well, but I should point out that it will reflect both starlight and reflected light from Earth. If OP's analysis on the apparent retrograde motion of the moon is anything to go by, it seems that the moon could be in a much lower orbit and much smaller; in which case it would reflect a lot more light from Earth than ours does. Also, this is purely visual. I'm not sure the animation is a good source for measuring relative apparent magnitudes. Considering how large ponies' eyes are, I'd almost expect them to be sensitive enough to see the night side of the moon rather well Furthermore, it's very possible that life on Equestria made adaptations to magic. One example I can produce as to how quickly life can adapt is Movile Cave, Romania.[Link] Life there is based on chemosynthesis rather than photosynthesis, and has adapted to oxygen levels less than half that of open air, and thrives off of methane and hydrogen sulfide. Similarly, once magic was introduced to Equestria, it's very believable that life there began to adapt in such a way to take advantage of the newly-introduced resources, then outpopulate non-adaptive life through natural selection, resulting in a biome that has become dependent upon magic. I could list the reasons I'm both disgusted and horrified by the geocentric model, but not the least of which is that it largely precludes any significant space travel, and limits the habitable confines of the universe to be extremely small, indeed, more or less precluding the rich vastness of the universe as we know it. The wonder of the vastness of the universe is, in my opinion, one of the very things that make life worth living. A universe confined to a single world is truly a horrifying prospect to me, to say the least. Fantastic read. Though I must ask, it sounded like your description of pre-magical Equestria has the moon sitting at Lagrange Point L1? Or I suppose it could work anywhere, in general. It seems to me though, that a lunar orbital period as long as a year would put the moon at such a distance that orbital effects of each body's orbit around the star would drive the two worlds apart. Admittedly, I don't have much of a quantitative argument, but qualitatively I believe that would be very far outside Earth's SOI. Oh, and I've quoted this particular paragraph because it seems to me to hint very strongly that there's a connection, which seems to stand out to me. If the princesses put the world into a rotation with negligable axial tilt, then that would explain why seasons must be done manually. A short burst of activity to somehow create a thick cloud layer to reflect much of the sun's light, cooling the surface, allowing for snow and a runaway process of increased albedo, and thus cooled surface, could create an artificial winter. When it comes time to end it, they need only decrease the amount of area that reflective objects (clouds, snow) cover and thus decrease their worlds' albedo, causing a runaway warming effect to melt the rest of the snow. Thinking on this further; the amount of horsepower required for this would be staggering - essentially completely impossible for a world like Equus (Equestria's planet). An idea that comes to mind is perhaps that there are regular seasons - but that their effects are minute enough to not overpower the runaway effects... Actually, as I've been typing out, I've decided to make my own post about this. It'll be coming shortly. EDIT: Here it is as the latest post at the moment: http://asksciencepony.tumblr.com/ Permalink: http://asksciencepony.tumblr.com/post/109959398800/non-sequitur-winter-wrap-up
  8. [i'm assuming we've checked our bags and you just haven't explicitly mentioned it?] I follow along, grinning - both nervously and happily - at the unexpected physical contact. My ears perk as I glance back and make sure she's not dropping/leaving anything behind. I think I might feel more nervous about her accidentally leaving something that drops out than she is. As we enter the train and settle whatever business of boarding, I follow her, hot chocolates in magical tow. As we find a spot to sit and get our carry-on bags situated, I giddily comment; "I love train rides. They're kinda cozy, just some time to relax with nothing pressing to do, and all the while be surrounded by cool technology." I grin. [if she doesn't have any comment, then] I continue to ask; "So what was that neat-looking book you were reading? Something about magic and physics in space?" Meanwhile, I mentally check to see if her hot chocolate is running low. After all, I've now got an extra cup for refills if it does ^.^ (the one originally meant for Spike)
  9. Hey there, I got an idea at one point. There are a LOT of mods out there for Kerbal Space Program, but so far, to my shock and horror, I haven't seen any pony ones... So I'm looking to assemble a small team to develop a mod for Kerbal Space Program! (click for source) So far, I have a Skype group set up with a total of two members; so we're obviously looking to grow quite a bit. Currently, my first tier goals will be: 1. Replace Kerbal models with animated pony models that move in a quadrapedal fashion. 2. Using Texture Replacer as a template, reverse-engineer its code so ponies can have varied coats. (Texture replacer gives Kerbals unique textures) If we finish those and are looking for more to do, there are some optional second-tier goals that may prove more difficult and are less essential (such as replacing the inside-craft icons with 2d ponies that generally look better than 3d ponies.) Needed Skills: (Rather tentative, I'm not completely sure what will be necessary, but here's what we're probably going to be working with. You only need one, of course!) * C# Programming * Familiarity with Unity * Texturing (very basic, mind you) * Ability to hunt down information! * Public Relations? (Art, advertising, etc) For the pony models, we can simply use Gary's Mod models to start - or even better yet, better pony models from elsewhere. Apparently it's pretty simple to add pony models. The hard part looks to be modifying the game's original code to change the models used for the Kerbals, as opposed to adding part models. Anyways, just reply here and send me a PM. I've got a Skype group set up and would much prefer to use that as our chat locale.
  10. The book catches my attention as she stows it, one of my ears perking up and tracking it away, before turning to her as she talks. "We shall" I echo. "But, before we head off," I start, "Your bags seemed to be kinda maxed out, there. I think I've got some extra room in mine," I glance back to my right saddlebag, then back to her, "my right bag is a bit heavier than my left, so I wouldn't mind taking some of that weight off..." I pause for a second, sensing the opportunity for a pun, I plan out my next words, "-taking that weight off your chest at all! Or in this case, off your back." I grin a silly grin. Mental notes: >ask about what she was reading! >Spike has a special somepony? Curiouser and curiouser. >I wonder what books she's got in there?...
  11. Task accomplished: Hot Cocoa times three acquired. Now for the final phase of the operation: I take a sip of my own, then levitate over a second cup I had bought to just in front of her (careful to not have her crash into it in her focus) as I call; "Hey, there." I pause to smile and lift the second cup up to her in an offering gesture. "I got this for you. And one for Spike. Buuut I guess he's not coming? Oh, and I think I've got some extra room in my saddlebags if you need it for all that stationery..."
  12. (gobble gobble) Answers her... Personally!? Who am I getting in the train with!? This could be! - no, no, friend first, VIP second. You're NOT just going to know her for perks of knowing someone influential and important. She's way into astronomy, after all, and on a personal level, that's far more important than any office! "Righto, well, see ya at the station, then!" I head out with a skip in my step, galloping through the town as I head back home. The excitement is energizing like a gallon of concentrated coffee. I can't remember the last time I've been so excited about anything. This could be my big chance to prove myself to the scientific and astronomical community, too! Thoughts of anxiety and nervousness poke at the edges of my mind, but melt away to excitement and ambition. I'm gonna make stuff happen! However, unlike my nervousness, the cold does not melt away, and by the time I get to my house; I'm sure to pack warm! Scarf, saddlebags, my current book on astronomy (Gravity's Fatal Attraction: Black Holes in the Universe)... I pause at feeling the book's textbook-like cover and pages. She's going to think it's so nerdy that I read this for fun. This will be her next relationship compatibility test: How does she respond to this being my book of choice? I grin widely, and continue packing; sweater, jacket, wallet, another bag of bits, pencil, slide rule, pen and paper, a snack, canteen, cocoa mix, toiletries... I mentally double-check my checklist, don the jacket, socks and boots and warm headgear along with the scarf, and after seeing off my some-what-concerned parents, head to the station with the loaded saddlebags, looking for anywhere that might offer a quick hot cocoa on the way...
  13. An off-schedule update!? JUST FOR ME!? A wave of excitement runs over me, and only lasts a brief moment before melting into nervousness; "Oh! I, uh... Uhm... Well, do you think you can get ready in an hour? Not sure how much packing we'll need to do." I anxiously put one hoof over the other, as my ears go flat against my head again, "I mean, kinda short notice, and if you don't want to..." Wait... A major observatory in Canterlot! Don't let this slip! C'mon, Comet, live a little! I suddenly perk up, confidence immediately enters my voice; "I mean, yeah! I can be ready in an hour if you can! So if you're good, I am! I can just run back, grab a few essentials then meet you at the station..." Then, the adventurous spirit melts to make way for curiosity; "And why were you confused to get an answer from a secretary?" "(Oh, and cool mail system!)" I sneak in a quick aside to Spike.
  14. I missed the update! NNNUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUU!!! I'm bouncing on my hooves with excitement. Normally, perhaps I'd take a few moments and ask about why they had just incinerated the letter, but given that magic is as magic does, and there's enough implication for me to assume that's how magic sends it; I'm content with what's currently on my mind; "Woah. Fire-mail? That's cool... Ooooooh! One of the big observatories!" My mouth seems to be watering at the thought. It reminds me of my own excitement at taking a look at Twilight's telescope. Facing her, I continue; "So, I take it you've been studying this 'anomaly' for quite awhile? What have you been able to gather about it?" Taking a look at her body language, I'm gonna look through the telescope some more at the object if she doesn't indicate she's going to come back to the telescope. But if she does make any kind of indication she's taking the telescope back to show me something, then I'll step away to make room for her.
  15. No, but we've seen very direct and more-or-less-unmistakable implications of those things. Pony shipping (finding Cherilee a "special somepony") + Cakes having the baby twins, plus word of Faust that they reproduce by normal mammal means (they are ponies). And we have seen both Rarity use the excuse "I need to use the fillies' room," and this makes it absolutely unmistakable. So yes, a lack of evidence where we'd expect to see evidence, is in fact evidence of a lack. But then again, seeing as it needs to keep a TV-Y rating, we probably wouldn't see those things even if they were intended ("where we'd expect to see evidence," as I just put it), but again, why would they make them intended if they're never to be seen or directly implied? Sooo... Essentially, it's just a "no" because this is a TV-Y universe. But if you want to headcanon those things in, you can, but they'll never be canonized. On top of the TV-Y thing, they also probably wouldn't want to do anything that'd be controversial, least they burn themselves by invoking those on the other side of the debate.
  16. "Ooh." I lift my gaze from the telescope to turn to her. "That sounds!-..." I lean forward, once again like a puppy ready to pounce and play as excitement pours of me, then I stop, and the excitement is replaced with visible nervousness. "Dangerous. I, uhh..." I look at the ground uneasily, then back at her, "I think we should at least try to figure out what the structure is first, perhaps with a larger telescope? I know there's some enormous observatories in Canterlot, and being up so high they get to see through a lot of the atmosphere, too. If you can get permission for a trip to the moon for research, then perhaps you could get some time on one of those observatories? You're stuck with me, though, I want in on this, so ya gotta tell me if you get some time on it ... " A grin comes over my face. "And you must have some pretty darn nice connections if you can get a trip to the moon! That would be... Quite spectacular..." I stash away the little slap I got in my mind to bring up at another time. As for now, I'm too interested to hear what she has to say about getting a powerful observatory focused on the moon, first, and her connections, to interrupt the flow of the conversation with her swat. (Where did she swat me again? O.o Also; Canterlot observatory is visible in my profile pic XP )
  17. Heh, to quote a friend of mine; "The thing people have a hard time understanding about freedom of speech, is it includes people who you don't agree with." It's deplorable and sad, as you say. Just like how often reverse racism and reverse sexism is, for some reason, seen as o.k, by the very same people who are so adamantly opposed to sexism and racism. There's just so many double standards out there it's... deplorable and sad (a women's college? A black college? Let's try a white male college and see how well that goes over, eh?). Oh, yes, I was mostly joking. Mostly. It's not a compelling case to say the least, but it is interesting. Also, "absence of evidence doesn't mean evidence of absence" is only circumstantially true. If I'm in an empty gymnasium, and I don't see any evidence of an elephant in the room - when if there were an elephant, I should definitely see evidence - then the absence of evidence is, in fact, evidence. It's not always the case, though. You can stand on the beach, and look out on the ocean and not see any whales. In fact, it'd be extremely unusual to see a whale. In that case, lack of evidence is not an evidence of a lack. In a situation, you have to ask yourself; "if X were true, would I see evidence of it?" Sometimes the answer is "yes," like an elephant in the gym. Sometimes it's "no," like a whale in the ocean. For the former, that phrase doesn't apply. For the latter, it does. And then sometimes you can't even answer that question with certainty, heh. Anyways, we now have about 30 hours of the show, and there's never been a single cigarette, any drugs, any alcohol, any extra-marrital sexuality, etc. Sure you can say; "they just don't show it because it's a kids show," but if you go strictly off of what they do show, then if those things were common at all, we would have expected to see them by now; so there's a rather strong case to be made that they aren't present. And if you say; "they just don't show them," well, you could say that about anything, then, so it's not a very compelling argument. These things are special, yes, in that they'd never show them in a kids' show, but I'd say that only strengthens the argument that they don't exist in the canon: we can say with certainty that they'll never appear canonically. Therefore, if you conjecture that they are present, then you're just throwing in something that's not in the show and never will be (or rather, it's exceedingly unlikely that it ever will be).
  18. "But what? 'buts' are always interesting!" I say with an excited grin. The pun, and thus somewhat untasteful ambiguous meaning of what I say goes completely over my head. I'm just thinking of how the exceptions are always the most exciting thing, the little glimmers that lead to breakthroughs! (Hopefully Twilight won't think I'm pulling a bad joke? >.< )
  19. "This... Is most curious!" I step forward and look into the eyepiece, careful to not touch or nudge the telescope out of position as I do so. The focused act has calmed me a bit so my voice is much more level as I talk, being careful to keep my eye just right with the eyepiece (what do I see?). "So... Is this something so small that no telescopes would have been able to see before this modern one? Because like I said, if it's ancient, I'd think somepony else would have discovered it a long time ago, first, unless it's so small that only modern telescopes can see it. So do you think it might be recent?..." I wonder if it might be a doorway or portal stone... Is there some way we could find out? What if some ancient magician found the key to immortality and built this thing just recently? What if he's going to escape from the moon?! The thoughts fly through, but I mentally stash them aside. I don't want to overwhelm Twilight with too many questions... I'm already asking a lot at once! "Wait... Is it airtight? If somepony built an pressure-tight structure, then they wouldn't have to keep conjuring their oxygen for a few minutes, at least, and could thus focus all their magic on teleporting... Surely Celestia had some other safeguard?"
  20. I almost liked the post until I saw "So she's cruel." I wouldn't call her cruel. She knows how to use tough love, more like, like Fluttershy sending off the breezies, much like how she forces Twilight and gang into situations for their own growth and good. Let me refer you to a thread I started on this topic: http://mlpforums.com/topic/106621-it-has-to-be-you/#entry2939236 And I'll just drop this here to speak for me: https://www.derpibooru.org/77936 That's just a fun little playful thing, trying to lighten the mood. I wouldn't call it trolling since she wasn't trying to aggravate someone else for her amusement. Just being playful
  21. Yeah, I'm well enough. It's certainly been an adventure of sorts, my goodness @.@ I felt a bit like I wouldn't make it when I reacted negatively to the Lialda. That was intense. I'll try to lay off the TMI, though >.< As for the prednisone, I can't say I really have noticed much bad from it, myself. Only been on it for about 2 or 3 weeks, though, and I'll probably be starting Remicade or Humira soon, so it'll probably be a good month or two before I can start weaning off the prednisone. The flare-up seems to have made me more exhausted, but the prednisone makes me very awake in the mornings, so it's like my energy's been polarized a lot like Pinkie Pie, which is why I felt like making this thread I guess :/ Hehe. I honestly haven't noticed those things that much (mood swings, food craving). The whole flare-up has made it so there's too much crazy stuff going on at once, I'm not sure what's because of that and what's because of the stuff I'm taking for it. I don't see why Pinkie would be on it, though. It's not something you take forever and she certainly doesn't seem to have UC or have had it flare up recently
  22. Arg. Sorry to hear. Round face? How long have you been going on it? My case wasn't actually that bad until I took Lialda; I discovered I'm in the lucky 5% of the populace or so that responds terribly to that stuff (It made it go from a moderate case to a very, very severe one). Currently talking to doctors about other options. Heheh, I guess I didn't come off as clearly as I'd hoped. I'm not suggesting Pinkie's on Prednisone, I'm just saying it's kind of interesting to experience life in a similar way that she seems to; big bounces of energy with exhaustion hitting in-between.
  23. My eyebrows perk at the mention of the conspiracy theory, but the idea of it being a building quickly takes the spotlight of my mind. "A building? On the moon? Why is this the first time anypony's noticed it? Who's been on the moon? I mean, after that whole Nightmare Moon incident I read up on that, and I'm pretty sure Luna's soul was sealed into the moon, rather than her actually being on its surface. Nopony's ever actually been on the moon, right? Oh, except Star Swirl used to travel with mirrors or something like that - is it possible he built that there?" As I speak, I walk towards the telescope and stop at a respectful "May I look?" distance away.
  24. Well, I just thought this was interesting. Normally it seems to us a big mystery how Pinkie has so much energy. We all know the Pink pone's wild antics and how she's always bouncing and bubbling. Where does she get it from? From some recent experience, I don't think she actually has more energy than most ponies, shockingly enough, I just think she uses her energy differently. Recently I got diagnosed with ulcerative colitis, and in the course of treatment, one of the things you take for that is prednisone, which has a side effect that makes you feel pumped and motivated, but you don't actually get more energy. It's led to this last week or so being very interesting. I wake up, I'm exhausted, but then I shoot out of bed, and I feel like I can tackle the day. I'm somewhat tired, but at the same time I have so much energy I find it hard to sit still. I really feel like I have enough energy and drive to complete a tremendous amount in the day. But it's not long-lasting. I don't usually go six hours before I feel like I want to flop back somewhere and sleep again - having spent those whole six hours with so much energy it's hard to focus. The net result is I actually have a serious problem with fatigue - although for a few hours I felt I could take on the world, most of the time I'm too exhausted to get anything done productively. And interestingly enough, being really tired (your eyes want to close, mind doesn't want to work) but having lots of energy at the same time (your legs bounce and are eager to prance around) results in a mindset a lot like Pinkie's as well. Lots of silliness. I just thought this was an interesting little insightful experience into what it's like to live in Pinkie Pie's body. Energetic, bouncing on top of the day; Source Then, after a full days' of "Too Many Pinkie Pies" drama, her friends ask her if she wants to go do stuff, but there's only one thing she's up to doing: (May I note, she also did this on the train in the mystery episode as well) I just thought this was an interesting little experience on what it's like to be Pinkie Pie. Live hard, play hard, sleep hard.
