As mentioned previously, it depends on the game whether I use a controller or a keyboard and mouse. Although, I have tried FPSs with my Steam controller, and it works OK. Not as good as using my hand to aim rather than my thumb, but much more accurate than a thumbstick.

For racing games a controller is better, keyboards are painful to use for racing games.
