  1. Actually, you can send it to any store not just the one which you bought it from.
  2. Well, if the restoration does not work, you will have to either : 1) open it and start "messing with stuff" 2) bring it back to the store. If you choose to go for option 1, I will be more than glad to help.
  3. I would personally not count in hours but in number of passes. I would say to let it run for 3 passes. But not too much either. To find out whether it is 4x2 or 2x4, you could just open the computer and take a look,
  4. After the restore, you can run a MemTest+ to test the RAM for a few passes. What do you mean by " a different sound ?" 8, it says in the first post. However, is it 4x2 Go or 2x4 Go ?
  5. I like to help other people but I really hate having to troubleshoot my own computer I go mad when my computer has a problem Yes, it might be worth using a MemTest and run a few passes.
  6. Well, if the RAM was faulty, the computer would likely bip on startup. I think.
  7. To be honest, the OP's problem is one of the hardest to troubleshoot. No error messages, no nothing, just random freezes. It could literally be anything
  8. Of course, I can understand that.
  9. Wow, I always install everything myself. Takes a couple hours but it's free
  10. 20 dollars. ! Oh come on, RAM is the easiest thing to install in a computer.
  11. What is Geek Squad ? Sounds professional
  12. That is because you go through the BIOS to boot in safe mode. She went through MSconfig and ticked the "Safe Boot" box. She will stay in safe mode until she unticks that box.
  13. NO. It won't work, She has to untick the box first !
  14. No, to leave Safe Mode, you have to go to MSconfig and untick the box that I told you to tick earlier. And, for system restore, do it in safe mode. EDIT : I quoted the wrong person
  15. System restore is indeed the most logical option. Just pick the oldest restore point.
  16. Alright, well, that's something. Now, you might want to restore your computer to a previous state ( before it started freezing.) So, First, open the control panel. Then, click on "System and Security". On the left, click on "system Protection" link. Click on "system restore" Follow the instructions. EDIT : replacing the motherboard is the worst thing you can do right now. EDIT 2 : BUTTERFLY!!!!!!
  17. Ok, I don't think it would be that useful to leave it on like this. What I would like is some more information. Did you update anything or install any software before the freeze ? Also, do you have any restoration point ? If yes, what date ?
  18. No, she said that her computer froze about every hour. That's all we have and it's not good to jump to conclusions straight away.
  19. DId she say she had two Antiviruses ? I don't think so...
  20. I don't trust free antiviruses. I personally recommend G-Data or Kaspersky which are much more complete.
  21. Well, when you buy a pre-installed computer, it comes with trial versions of sotwares. It serves as advertisements purposes and you should get rid of them as soon as you can. For the Antivirus, there are no problems downloading them as long as you do it from the official website and you know what you download so as to avoid "fake" antiviruses. Next, you should never use two antiviruses at the same time. If you're lucky, one of them will detect the other and put itself in "limited" mode. If you're not lucky, they will fight each other and that will cause problems.
  22. We can look into that later. She mentioned even with no programs running. 2 antivirus programs can cause problems and slow down the computer but crashes every hour is highly unlikely.
  23. Now, that you're in Safe Mode, you want to find out whether the computer still crashes. Don't worry about the recovery for now. Keep it running and see if it crashes again. If it does not, then we'll talk about "recovery" and "system restoration" , etc... If it does, we'll have to look on the hardware side of things. The BIOS error messages can come up because of a lot of different factors. I had BIOS Checksum errors because my computer was overheating. It does not always mean that the problem comes from the motherboard.
  24. Alternatively, you can try the following which is easier than trying to figure out which button to press Start the computer normally. press Windows + R keys. Type msconfig and press Enter. Click the "boot" tab. Check the "Safe Boot" box and select "minimal" for a typical safe boot. The computer will boot in safe mode the next time it restarts.
  25. It's not F8. It's either F2 or F10. This is the boot manager. It allows you to change your boot device which is not what we want. On my computer, the Safe Mode option is accessed using F8. Unfortunately, it 's different for every computer. You might want to check the manual that came with the motherboard.
