  1. Love Lies Bleeding - A brutal, gripping crime drama that's also a very entertaining (and horny) queer romance. Kristen Stewart and especially Katy O'Brian are phenomenal. 9 out of 10.
  2. Drive Away Dolls - A zany and uneven, but ultimately enjoyable queer comedy. 7 out of 10. Dune: Part Two - Everything a sequel should be and then some. Large in scope, top notch acting, incredible music, and incredible action sequences. My favorite movie of the year so far. 10 out of 10.
  3. My first movie of 2024 was The Beekeeper with Jason Statham. A very basic and goofy, but very entertaining action movie. Think Death Wish, but with tech bros. A solid 8 out of 10.
  4. I saw two more movies to close out the year: Poor Things: A weird cross between Frankenstein and Edward Scissorhands. Gorgeously shot, darkly humorous, and has amazing performances from the entire cast (especially Emma Stone). Yorgos Lanthimos is slowly becoming one of my favorite directors. 9.5 out of 10. Migration: The best Illumination movie since the first Despicable Me. Very formulaic and safe, but also very sweet, sincere, and endearing family film. 7.5 out of 10.
  5. Godzilla Minus One - Not only is this an amazing Godzilla movie, it's also one of the best movies of 2023. An emotional war drama that just so happens to feature a giant monster. 10 out of 10.
  6. Killers of the Flower Moon - Another winner for Martin Scorsese. Even with a lofty 3.5 hour runtime, this is a well-acted, masterfully directed. and compelling crime drama. Special praise especially for Lily Gladstone, in what could be a star-making performance. 9.5 out of 10.
  7. Saw X - Easily the best Saw movie in years. It has all the plot twists and carnage you expect from the series, but also has a compelling character story centered on John Kramer. 8 out of 10. The Creator - A refreshing and ambitious sci fi epic. Thrilling, stunning to look at, thought provoking, and it somehow has better special FX than most blockbusters despite having a third of the budget. 8.5 out of 10.
  8. The Equalizer 3 - Hands down the best in the series. Full of brutal cathartic action courtesy of Denzel Washington. 8 out of 10.
  9. Blue Beetle - Nothing groundbreaking, but it's easily the best DC movie this year (way better than Shazam 2 and whatever the hell The Flash was). A solid superhero story with a lot of humor and heart. Loved the representation and Xolo as Jaime. I'm very happy that Gunn is bringing him into the DCU. 8 out of 10.
  10. Talk to Me - Who knew the Racka Racka guys on YouTube were so good at making horror? This is a creative, well-directed, and tragic ghost story and I can't wait to see what they do next. 9 out of 10.
  11. Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Mutant Mayhem - Hands down the best TMNT movie. Fantastic voice acting (the Turtles feel like real teenagers this time), fantastic action sequences, breathtaking animation, a fantastic score, and it's surprisingly emotional. Can't wait to see where they go next with this franchise. 9 out of 10.
  12. I did the Barbenheimer double feature this weekend. Barbie - Visually stunning, great meta humor, surprisingly deep, and full of brilliant social commentary. Greta Gerwig is a director to look out for in the future. 9 out of 10. Oppenheimer - As a huge fan of Christopher Nolan, I think this may be some of his best work. Gripping story and stellar performances from the stacked cast (too many to list). It moves pretty fast for a 3 hour movie, though it's a little slow at the beginning. A haunting look at history. 9.5 out of 10.
  13. Mission: Impossible - Dead Reckoning Part One - Somehow, this series continues to get better and better with each installment. Thrilling action sequences, solid performances, and a timely villain. Can't wait for the next one! 9.5 out of 10.
  14. Asteroid City - If you love Wes Anderson and his style as a filmmaker, you'll likely enjoy this one as well. If you're not, this won't be the one that wins you over. 8 out of 10.
  15. Elemental - Perhaps not S-Tier Pixar, but still a very heartfelt, sweet and charming film. Dazzling visuals, cute romance, and a fantastic score by Thomas Newman. I see this going down as a cult classic that gets more appreciation down the line. 8 out of 10.
  16. The Flash - Very messy, loaded with fan-service, and uneven (especially in the third act). However, I had a great time regardless. Fun action sequences, some solid humor, and even got emotional at times. 7 out of 10. If for nothing else, I'm glad the movie is finally out after all the delays, which means we're one step closer to laying the DCEU to rest.
  17. Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse - By god, they did it again. Just as visually stunning, action-packed, hilarious, and emotional as the first. The rare sequel that matches if not surpasses the original. I cannot wait to see how this trilogy wraps up. 10 out of 10.
  18. I like how Hitch cares for Sparky like a parent from the getgo, whereas G4 didn't really do that until around S4. G4 struggled with its male characters in the first few seasons. G5 at least, hasn't had that issue.
  19. Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 - Marvel's best in a long time. A little bit bloated, but the positive outweighs the negative by a long shot. Great action, a fantastic villain, and full of the heart that made 1 and 2 so good. 9 out of 10.
  20. Evil Dead Rise - This franchise just does not miss. The fifth movie is another solid entry. Great scares, brutal ultraviolence, and surprisingly emotional at times. 9 out of 10.
  21. Renfield - It's uneven and it sometimes feels like two different movies stitched together. But enough of the jokes landed that I had a good time. Nicholas Cage as Dracula is worth the price of admission alone. 7 out of 10.
  22. Super Mario Bros - Is it a safe, barebones, and generic animated film? Yes. Did I have a fun time watching it for the visuals and as a fan of Mario? Also yes. 7 out of 10.
  23. Dungeons & Dragons: Honor Among Thieves - A movie that's way better than it has any right being. Thrilling action, a cast of fun characters, and it's surprisingly funny. Think Guardians of the Galaxy meets The Princess Bride. I definitely wouldn't mind seeing this become a franchise. 9 out of 10.
  24. The thing is, you can see MYM getting better as it goes along. But the long wait in-between episodes is killing the momentum.
  25. John Wick: Chapter 4 - Not only is it the best John Wick movie; not only is it my favorite movie of the year so far; This is one of the best action movies I've seen in the last 5 years. Those 3 hours flew by. If you liked the previous movies, you'll love this one too. 10 out of 10.
