  1. I actually like Nickelback. I guess I'm one of the few, but I honestly don't get why they get so much hate. The worst allegations against them in this thread seems to be that they're mediocre, but mediocrity is hardly grounds for the amount of hate they get. If anything, the epitome of mediocrity for me would be One Direction, and I don't hate them either. I just consider them entirely forgettable.

I've also heard that Nickelback are sellouts...but honestly, why does that matter? Most bands these days are sellouts in one way or another, simply because money has quite a lot of influence in our world. I mean, we are all watching a show about multi-colored ponies specifically designed to sell toys. How is that not selling out?

Oh well. I'll just continue on liking their music. They're still in business so I guess selling out did work for them.

  2. My obsession changes periodically. Currently it's watching speedruns and RWBY.

Other things I have been obsessed with in the past:

    - MLP

    - Pokemon

    - Minecraft

    - Hydro Thunder

    - Burnout 3

    - Fable

    - Oblivion

    - Skyrim

    - Ninja Gaiden

    - Digimon

    - Medabots

    Several others I'm forgetting.

  3. I once had a dream where  I could enter cheat codes by using my cell phone, so I went completely rogue and used lightning to essentially fight half the city (which was not my city, by the way) and subdue them and then I went back in time to where I never did all that because I began to feel guilty for killing so many people. (I get this way in video games as well sometimes)

  4. Hmm, I never saw this one. I saw the one with Ashleigh Ball, though, the 2014 one. I'm not entirely sure what to think of it. One one hand, it's fun to watch, but I will admit some parts of it just make me cringe.

  5. Well, EQG was quite polarizing from the start because at the time it was announced a lot of people, myself included, didn't really consider it FiM if the characters were suddenly human. Then, of course, a lot of people, again with myself included, were salty about Hasbro 'selling out' to the high school fad to compete with Monster High (which, I might note, is incredibly stupid to be angry about because Hasbro wants to make money and they've never pretended otherwise.)

Then, the first movie came out. I think many people watched it with a negative bias, myself not included for once, because I wanted to give it a fair chance. While some elements worked, the movie as a whole was really just 'okay' and nothing else. Sunset was a cardboard cutout villain and Flash a cardboard cutout love interest (who has his own share of haters, which of course reflects on the series as a whole again). This meant that people who went into it with negative feelings weren't exactly proven wrong, while those with neutral or positive views didn't have much to be truly happy about.

All in all, that leads to a vocal minority panning the movie while those who would defend it had only very little to go on. IMO, that changed when RR came out because Sunset suddenly became a real character and the series found something of an identity because of that, but I can imagine the same vocal minority hating the first movie either wasn't convinced or simply didn't bother to watch RR.

TL;DR: It's not as hated as it seems to be, but the concept itself made many people salty at first and the first movie didn't do much to improve the image.

  6. I think Discord is more powerful than any single pony in the series. I also believe Twilight, being essentially magic incarnate, has limitless potential. However, Discord is the sole owner of his powers, while Twilight's power relies greatly on her friends. In my headcanon, Celestia rules the sun, Luna the moon, and Twilight the stars, represented by all the ponies in Equestria.

  7. The first thing that was said about the Two Sisters is that they ruled Equestria.

I think that this thing about Rarity Takes Manehattan is an example of the writers not being able to deal with Twilight being a princess and at the same time keeping the status quo the same. I thought that was weird and just confusing. Maybe it's because there was a line and they didn't want to make it look like Twilight has privileges , but then again there is a line because the production put it there. Maybe the idea is just that Twilight doesn't get benefits out of being a princess.

Part of the problem is that the cartoon, at least in my opinion, does a terrible job of showing the audience what a princess is. Most of the times they're more like celebrities of minor importance to the ponies, and at the same time Cadance is the ruler of the Crystal Empire and this is a big deal, but then Twilight is a trusted judge and Luna is a dreamcatcher. Celestia is just... There. doing some unfathomable princess thing that is never important but let her sit in her throne for 1000 years, even though the other one had just gone mad and there was no indication that Celestia wouldn't do the same...

It seems princesses are supposed to be

    - Rulers

    - Guardians

    - Teachers

    - Wise counselors

    - Undefined sophisticated royalty that don't really like being royalty, but is stuck with it

It's confusing. All of these fit in specific cases, but none of these seem to really stick to them and I honestly don't have a clue about what ponies think of the princesses, what they think of themselves and I think that neither do the writers.

Quoting from the Journal of Two Sisters here: "Actually, Luna and I clarified that our role in Equestria wouldn't be as rulers and we will not think of the ponies in Equestria as our subjects. That would be very awkward. We will be Equestria's guardians. That sounds much friendlier. We will serve and protect, watching over Equestria's lands and skies, keeping them peaceful and safe."

When it comes to the Rarity Takes Manehattan bit I think you've hit the nail on the head: the writers did that. In-universe, however, that makes little sense. Royalty in Equestria might be very different from how we know it IRL. Ponyville is essentially a hick town in Equestria, and it's located relatively close to Canterlot so they might have more reverence for the princesses than the inhabitants of Manehattan do. I've never seen Celestia or Luna in a big city so I don't know how ponies would react to them there.

Honestly, like you said, the show is too inconsistent for me to fabricate a good theory, which is why I chalked everything up to destiny to begin with. I guess this is just another mystery I'll never get a satisfactory answer for, just like the musical transformation thing in RR.

  8. I love K-ON. This is the show that first got me shipping yuri pairings and I never went back from that. Aside from that, I like the lighthearted tone and the songs in it a lot. The first time I heard No Thank You I almost fell off my chair because of how awesome it was.

  9. My ability to memorize things is inversely proportional to how important said thing is. If it's completely useless I'll remember it forever. If it's very important, I'll forget it within a minute. Aside from that I never remember people's names until I've heard them several times or I spend a lot of time with that person. If neither happens, that person just ceases to exist for me.

  10. In 'Journal of the Two Sisters' Celestia says she and Luna were chosen to guide Equestria. I've always seen that as being different than outright ruling it. She fills a diplomatic role and that of a figurehead, but I really don't know how much say she has in day to day life in Equestria. (For instance in Rarity Takes Manehattan nopony gave a flying feather about Twilight being a princess judging by the way they treated her; who's to say Celestia wouldn't get the same kind of reception?)

Aside from that, in Equestria there's a pesky little thing called destiny. Cutie Marks and ascending to royalty and all that good stuff is heavily bound to the concept of destiny, and given the importance Cutie Marks carry within the story I assume that part of the reason Celestia strongly believes in freedom is so that everypony is free to find their own Cutie Marks, and their destiny. Now, the Elements of Harmony are probably tied even more strongly to destiny than most other things. It might well be that ancient prophecies (or something similar) more or less force Celestia to step back and let the Mane Six fix everything, because destiny says she has to.

I'll admit it's not a watertight explanation, but the fact is and will always remain that this is a kids' show that was never meant to be analyzed this closely. Celestia is not the main character of the show, nor are Luna or Cadance, and therefore they will not solve the problems that arise within it.
