Well thank you for sparing me as that was easily one of my favorite episodes in the entire show. Pathos over logos be damned.

 

And I would say yes, but that's just the thing. I don't think he would. Nothing we've seen of Sombra leads us to believe he had any regret of what he'd done. Yes, sympathetic backstory, Voldemort was also picked on as a kid, didn't make him any less a monster. (In fact, it probably helped him on his way there.)

 You're welcome. I felt as though I've given that episode enough of piece of my mind. I don't intend on sounding like a broken record on something I care little for. 

And of course. It was merely something you was curious about to, I suppose, have a little more insight on my perspective on this subject. *shugs* nothing wrong with that. 

Let me ask this then, is this an attitude you hold yourself in life? I only ask because many times people project their own values on to the things they like, which is fine! It's art, we all interpret it differently and I'm not even disagreeing completely with the intent.

 

I'm very much a forgive and forget sort of guy so I don't keep grudges that well and this reflects my attitude when it comes to character redemption. I'm just curious is all if you don't hold the same in life and therefore wish the fiction you enjoy reflects that.

Nah xD. It actually takes A LOT for me to even reach a point where I'm angry and must work on forgiving someone. I mean...a lot. This is merely my common sense speaking on the matter. I just think it's weird how some characters receive harsher punishment than others for less extreme actions xD

No need, I wasn't indicting that you were even saying such. Just that what else could one give a child apart from a stern talking to? Babs almost got run off a cliff and Diamond Tiara's "punishment" was from not being perfect by her mother.

I don't even think Babs got a stern talking to. And tbh....the CMC in that episode weren't in the right either. As I said, that whole episode really rubbed me the wrong way in how everything was handled from BOTH sides. If only I could runs someone's bull off a cliff an avoid a nice scolding let alone some minor punishment xD 

And DT's situation was....mm...nah not going into that. I've already explained how I feel about all that. 

I wonder....given to what's been said. If Sombra seeked redemption from enslaving a pony race in the past, and shadowing the Crystal Empire in darkness and a ruthless reign, would it have made sense of even been fair if they all simply forgave him so easily and allowed him to live among them without caution? 

I don't recall Gilda or  Discord actually seeking redemption. I don't even think Starlight Glimmer desired it at all. Only when they are introduced or reminded of something better is when they take a look at their mistakes. 

Any and every character is capable of redemption. Whether they seek it or not. Lightning Dust wasn't even given a chance. 

It is easy to criticize how easily a character is forgiven in the show BECAUSE of how others easily get the boot. Lightning Dust risk ponies falling to their deaths because she wants to take the easy way out and is kicked out of the Wonderbolts with no chance to redeem herself. 

Starlight messes up time giving horrible futures and nearly destroys everything, but is shown a better path and offered friendship. Starlight was even willing to accept just the slightest punishment for what she did, so I don't really think it all depends on what a character seeks.

Take it from someone who just finished children's entertainment course, it's not "easy" but there are limits as to what you can do and as good as this show is, subtlety is not a tool it employs. Sunset was given the benefit of time allocation. She had the end of one movie to begin her redemption, another to experience the fallout of her actions, and yet another to solidify her more stable status. Compare that to most characters only having the focus of one episode. We only saw Starlight Glimmer four times, twice if you count the two parters as one. She wasn't a reoccurring character the same way Discord even was when he was recovering.

 

Discord DID go through a back and forth arc, he wasn't just magically fixed. Hell he even had a relapse! That was more than I was expecting.

 

Babs and Diamond Tiara are both children, their actions, while cruel, are simple to come back from. What does pulling someone's hair warrant jail time if they're five?

I don't recall saying children needs to be locked up and I definitely didn't inquire DT an Babs deserving that harsh of a punishment for their actions so I'm going to overlook that. 

And oddly enough, I saw Discord's relapse predictable. He's the embodiment of chaos...it's in his nature so he was bound to slip at some point. The attitude the mane 5 had towards Discord (before "What about Discord") was realistic in some way where he wasn't easily nor fully forgiven for his past mistakes. 

Aside from the little things I disagreed with in what Nightmare Muffin said, I will admit that it's a fair thing to point out regardless. Perhaps the best response that is potentially a mind changer for me in how I believe some characters shouldn't be easily forgiven when it comes to their actions. And that's not just towards antagonists....it's towards protagonists as well. Example: The CMC in "Ponyville Confiential". They weren't easily forgiven at all...which was something I was impressed with. It took a little more to convince Ponyville they were genuinely sorry for what they did an quit for goo. 

I never did but I'm sure you're not the only one. You're probably just the only one to have admit it on an MLP forum xD

In all seriousness, I disagree with the OP. Everyone deserves forgiveness and that a show goes out of its way to show how preferable that is to beating the villain outright is something I count as one of its strengths.

 

I can agree with this but again, not really challenging characters being forgiven in general. I am fully aware of what the show is trying to accomplish. After all, the best way to defeat an enemy is to make them your friend. Which was taught in a literal sense within the episode "Keep Calm and Flutter On" and "The Cutie Re-Map"

It's the sense that consequences are completely ignored when they are most needed but then harshly used on others. It is a strength, but does it still excuse what they've done? I wouldn't think so. Here is the best example of what SHOULD happen with over half the bullies shown to be forgiven in less than 30seconds:

Sunset Shimmer in RainbowRocks. I admired how she was still having troubles gaining everyon'e trust. While I am not a person who heavily relies on a kids show to give harsh consequences some may receive in real life, I do expect something of what happened to Sunset Shimmer. Discord is another good example.

But in the case with Babs and DT....personally I thought it was all a mess that could have potentially went in a better direction.   

It's a disservice to the writers to do so, certainly.

(someone brought up her flirting earlier, which is a good example of that) and despite the discussion I had previously (which did raise some good points) I do get the impression that she enjoys fame for its own sake (I'm thinking of Sonic Rainboom here, although she does apologise for that at the end) rather than as means to an end (commercial success / appreciation of her talent), which I also don't approve of. They give her a well-rounded personality, but not one that I like as much as the others. And to be clear, likes and dislikes are subjective, so this in no way meant to invalidate anyone else's approval of her.

 

To be honest, Rarity was out of character in that episode "Sonic Rainboom". That was literally the ONLY time she genuinely got lost in herself for absolutely no reason and demanded all the attention. I don't know who the hell that was in Sonic Rainboom, but it wasn't Rarity. 

And I am not entirely sure why people would hate Rarity for flirting to get what she wants. When over half the time, she wants something that would help her friend, or something one that could aid her in her work. Never has she done it for personal gain that would get her no where. Otherwise, Rarity wouldn't be struggling to become a great designer, she would be one already. Also, Rarity is not the only one who will manipulate ponies and to be honest it's not always a BAD thing. 

Fluttershy is a great example of an ultimate manipulator. But when I brought this up in another thread, people thought I was pointing this out as a BAD thing? She manipulated Discord in "Keep Calm an Flutter On" and she uses those adorable eyes and soft voice to guilt trip ponies into doing something they don't want to do. Twice she has on RD: Once in "May the Best Pet Win" and in "Dragon Quest" it was obvious RD did not want to be in the butterfly migration. And don't even use the excuse that RD was not manipulated, she simply was being a loyal friend. She is capable of refusing things. Fluttershy has no problem "putting her hoof down" when she doesn't want to do something as seen in "Dragon Quest" when she literally stomped RD to the ground despite RD stressing Fluttershy owed her.

TLDR.  (I'm sorry.)  I think most bullies typically are forgivable, because the term bully in itself implies rather petty rudeness, teasing, and things of that nature, but not pure evil.  There are certainly evil characters on the show that can't be forgiven or reformed, which is good, because it would be silly and unentertaining (<--that's not a word?  what?) to paint a world that's so perfect that no evil exists.  But the bullies have never done anything evil, so I think they are forgivable, but some more easily that others.  Reforms on FIM are always quick, though, and it would be nice if we saw a reformed villain/bully working a bit harder to make up for what they've done.  We need to see a bit more consequences.

 

Irl, I try to take a line from the page of FIM, particularly the CMC, and try to understand and forgive more often, rather than blindly hating someone who's rude to me.  If I had had my way long ago, I'd have thrown Diamond Tiara into a wood chipper.  I'da been wrong, wouldn't I?

I see what you mean, but again, I'm not questioning whether or not a bully is forgivable....I'm referring to how some bullies shouldn't be as easily forgivable than the other.

DT is a case that needed more time. Yet Lightningdust was thrown out the Wonderbolts for making a mistake. True...she did risk the lives of others, but one would the think the Wonderbolt Academy was partly the blame because it's been proven a few times that they are way too lenient with how they manage their members....which leads to large egos and blind competitive spirits.

Gilda yelled at people and it took seasons before she had a chance of redemption.

So my problem isn't bullies being forgiven...it's certain bullies being EASILY forgiven with a quick turn around that doesn't do any justice. Not to mention the lack of consequences (as you already mention) for those who NEED a consequence. Such as DT and Babs

I think you're an introvert, so you will never understand. Rarity is an extrovert. She prefers being around people rather than being alone. That isn't wrong. Of course, as an introvert, you can't relate to that aspect of Rarity. It's not uncommon for extroverts to want to be famous and popular. I am one of those people. You wouldn't understand, but I love being surrounded by people, just like Rarity does. (Though it's ponies in her case.) 

Agreeing with this. Though I see it more with Rarity admiring the opportunities and rewards from being popular....not just for the sake of being popular herself. I think she prefers fame for what she does....not for who she is. As shown in "Green isn't your color". How she got jealous for people loving Fluttershy instead of paying more attention to her creation and not giving the credit she deserved.

If her execution would be the same/her episodes/etc even as a bat pony then I am sure nothing major would change when it comes to how people see her. I pay more attention to Fluttershy more than any other pony despite her not being my best pony.

I guess if she was a bat pony from the beginning, the only thing that would change is an increase in bat pony art? xD

Rainbowash and/or Applejack because RD is seen as a lesbian or "tomboy least likely to get a guy" and Applejack is depicted as an independent lady who doesn't need colt in her life.

But if I'm to be honest, there isn't just one answer for me. There will be an uproar for all of them and it's hard to imagine one uproar being bigger than the other. Regardless, "someone's waifu" will be stolen xD

Could you draw my OC Silver Stream? She's a white unicorn with peach-colored eyes an a blended colored mane/tail of blues an purples.  Her tail is pretty long to the point it drags on the ground and she has a mane style similar to Sunset Shimmer's. You can draw her in whatever pose you'd like. Her magical talent is controlling water and emotional healing. Her cutiemark is a whirlpool with a water lily in the middle to represent her clashing personality. 1. A Celestia Episode....like...a MEANINGFUL episode. Not a "Slice of Life" type of thing. 

2. A Luna episode that doesn't make her a pity party. She deserves better

3. Pony Sunset Shimmer visits 

4. Explore other places other than The Crystal Empire, Canterlot,Manehatten, Cloudsdale, and Ponyville. Let's visit Yayakastan 

5. An Episode on Fluttershy's family or past. Same for Applejack and Rarity

6. CMC episode about them living up to their purpose in life. 

7. DT struggling to not be a b*tch

The biggest issue is that when you consider how much importance is placed on the premiere and finale episodes, it ultimately trivializes the mane five's overall importance to the show when they are sidelined in them. Quite frankly, it's an annoying trend. It doesn't prove Twilight's status as the show's central character any further than it's already been proven, it simply weakens the perception of the mane five's status as main characters. 

 

You can just tell how effective it is when you see people stating that The Cutie Re-Mark would've been an ideal place to end the show. I mean, shouldn't the final episode of the show include all the mane six and give them each a significant amount of focus, rather than focusing only on Twilight? I mean, just think where The Cutie Re-Mark would have left the mane five had it been the series finale. Hell, just look no further than Rarity. One of her final scenes in the show would have had her being a racist bitch towards Spike. Is that honestly how it should be? 

 

Oh, and this isn't even to mention the first two Equestria Girls films, which also serve to sideline the mane five. I've long since been under the belief that these films should have included all of them right from the start, or none of them. Fortunately, however, Friendship Games seems like a pretty good indication that they won't include the pony Twilight anymore, so it's probably not really an issue anymore. 

 

There's just no reason for this anymore, not at this point in the show. No one denies Twilight's status as the central character, but the more this kind of thing happens, the more I'm going to find myself asking whether or not the mane five are main characters anymore. 

The Season 5 finale, and Season 3 finale are perhaps the only two big things you can say was solely Twilight's spotlight. Not even "Twilight's Kingdom" does she accomplish anything on her own. She does indeed have a great fighting scenes, but ultimately, it took all of them to defeat Tirek. It took all of them to defeat Nightmare Moon, it took Cadence and Shining Armor to defeat Chrysalis....hell....the freaking lesson in "The Crystal Empire" for Twilight was that she can't always do things herself so it took SPIKE to save the day. 

I don't really see the huge issue with there being too much Twilight when 75% of the show covers the other mane characters, The CM could even be considered main characters based off their screentime and the importance of their journey to get their cutie marks. 

If you're going to throw EG in this as well....then okay lets talk about EG: First movie, Twilight is a naive furry and Sunset is a bland bully who sucked as a villain. We are literally re introuced to all of the mane 5.

RainbowRocks: Twilight is literally USELESS throughout the whole movie, Sunset is an adorable pity party, and The Dazzlings are gods of the movie. The mane 5 is shown a lot within this movie arguing.

Friendship Games: Mostly focused on Sunset and yet again...another confused Twilight. and rivalry between the Mane 5 and Shaowbolt 6. 

Even with Twilight being sort of....the focus....it's degrading her as a character regardless because of how she was executed in the EG movies.

90% of Twilight's accomplishments in the show is BECAUSE of the Mane 5. They literally make up the show...not just Twilight. Anyone who thinks otherwise most likely doesn't take them seriously nor do they give them the well deserved credit. That isn't the show's fault or Twilight's..... it's the mindset of the fan imo
