  1. Recently, I got a chance to image Venus in UV with my Skywatcher 16 telescope. I've been wanting to compare its UV performance with my Celestron C8. The Skywatcher 16 is a reflector design, while the C8 is a Schmidt-Cassegrain (see link for more info). It is known that reflectors perform better in UV than telescopes with glass in the optical path. There are several reasons for this: Glass tends to absorb UV, especially wavelengths below 365nm or so Glass lenses tend to display worsening chromatic aberration with shorter wavelengths With the C8, I can get decent UV images, but the focus is never sharp. The glass corrector plate is designed to correct spherical aberration caused by the primary mirror, but the corrector plate simply cannot do this for the entire visible spectrum, much less UV. Also, the glass corrector plate absorbs some of the UV light passing thru, dimming the image on the camera. You can see the defocus around the planet's disk. Compare that to the Skywatcher 16, the planet is well focused. This isn't a fair comparison tho. The Skywatcher 16 has a primary mirror of 16" in diameter vs 8" for the C8, yielding 2x the resolution. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Schmidt–Cassegrain_telescope https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Chromatic_aberration Hope you enjoy reading all of that.
  2. Pretty uneventful day at work. Kinda creepy seeing long empty halls.  :maud:

@Ultraviolet Phosphor At my dad's job, people were divided into the Blue Team and the White Team. Each week, one team comes in while the other team stays home. My dad is on the Blue Team, meaning he technically could come in this week, but he's staying home anyway.

Not sure how my bedroom-converted home office would compare. I can still keep in touch because my cell phone is hooked to my office phone.

Most of my work is hands on, so working from home would be unproductive. Even if it wasn't, I'm limited by satellite internet. Video chats with that kinda latency would not be fun.

  4. Not really. I live in a rural area and wash my hands regularly. Also, my work is not open to the public, so there's fewer people around.
  5. I go back to work tomorrow, since I just got deemed "essential".

    How was everypony's weekend?

  9. About late 20's for me. Started noticing certain joints aching more often, most likely due to all those years working at a small engine shop. I'm 30 and so far only have 3 gray hairs. Hope it stays that way for a while
  10. I use it on my computer and also wear amber glasses when it's near bedtime.
  11. I think I saw these satellites just after twilight yesterday. There was a string of them passing above Venus.

I saw it by placing my hand in front of my shirt, which is white. The ground here is mostly grass, which is probably too dark to notice any shadows. It's not much, but it's still cool to see it  :kirin:

      Lucky Bolt

That's so cool! I didn't even think that was possible. Well I just realized how NOT dark the skies around here are. :o Still fun to go out and stargaze though, even if it's just a little bit of stars I'm able to see. It's so relaxing.

  13. It was quite hot today, but this was definitely worth it. My 16" telescope performed very well in UV, as predicted. The UV images of Venus are much sharper than those from the Celestron C8. :yay:

If anypony is interested, I will add a post comparing the images with an explanation of why there's a difference. It'll be in the nonpony artwork thread.

    Enjoy!  :BrightMacContent:

@DivineBlur1000, I almost had a good pic of the thin crescent moon yesterday evening. I was walking to the field down the road and saw it. By the time I walked back to grab my camera, it had already set below the trees. Next time  :P

@Princess of Hearts ❤️❤️, Cloud details on Venus are only visible in the UV spectrum. Otherwise, the planet appears plain white. Like this:

    3. Princess of Hearts ❤️❤️

      Princess of Hearts ❤️❤️

Is that visibility only in UV due to the composition of Venus’s clouds and atmosphere?

    4. Ultraviolet Phosphor

      Ultraviolet Phosphor

@Princess of Hearts ❤️❤️: Yep. The UV absorber could be sufuric acid in the clouds.

  14. Social distancing: Not a problem here!  :fluttershy:
