Rainbow Dash- Quoted from a thread I made a while ago
I'd like for Rainbow Dash to learn that she doesn't have to be cool/the best. While she's known for being pretty blunt at times, she actually can struggle with being herself. In Sonic Rainboom, she was compelled to put on a cocky and confident face while inside she just wanted to get away from everything. Her fear of not living up to everyone's expectations and messing up in public crippled her. In Mare Do Well, she hid just how bothered she was with how quickly a new hero replaced her in the eyes of the town and how quickly she became yesterday's news, showing only brashness and jealousy, and not how troubled she was. In Read it and Weep, she was afraid to let people know that she liked a freaking book. Seems to me that she'd be better off and happier being who she is and not trying to be who everyone (and she) thinks Rainbow Dash is/should bePinkie Pie- Just because she provides comic relief doesn't mean that she should be treated like a joke. I feel that earlier seasons did a better job at keeping her funny and random without being over the top and completely crazy, though she usually does better in episodes that she's actually the main focus of. I'd prefer for them to just tone it down a little in episodes where she's not the focus character (e.g, no completely forgetting everything that's going on if she sees a balloon
)
Applejack-
Implying Applejack isn't flawlessMore seriously, she could stand to be less hard on herself, though she's already made significant progress towards that.
Fluttershy- Having her character development stick better is all I can really think of.
Rarity- She could stand to have her flaws played for laughs less often, but otherwise I have no serious issues with her character. She's the funniest character in the show, and it's perfectly easy to bring that out without making her look shallow or demanding or insensitive.
Twilight Sparkle- My main problem with Twilight is when the show seems to focus on her at the expense of other characters, though thankfully that's not as big of a problem outside premieres, finales, and movies. I guess that I'd prefer it if they emphasized her remaining flaws and showed me that she still has room to grow, because she's really hard for me to relate to these days.

Is anyone here going to purchase the blu-ray version of Rebellion? I think it'll have a Japanese release first. But you might get it for $60 on a theoretical basis
Might try to get the soundtrack somewhere or other, and we'll see what'll happen after that. The song from that one fight scene is something I need to be able to listen to over and over and over and...

If Lightning Dust loses to the Bland Brother Best Friend Forever I'm gonna...do something I guess
. Most likely be unhappy for a short amount of time and be all passive aggressiveish.
But seriously now, as a sort of darker copy of one of the main characters I feel like Dusty's got loads of untapped potential that may or may not get used, and Shining seems destined to show up again and again and make no impression on me at all.
Obligatory cute picture

Naw, I think the current storyline involves the Mane Six inspiring others to live out their respective elements and that's why we have such clear parallels. There's no real indication that they're intending to change casts, and I'm frankly happy for that.

In the newest episode when Discord was sick and was looking for a caretaker, Rainbow Dash bolted and left the others to care for him. That's not very loyal of her
If anything is to be blamed on being needed by the writing, I feel like this scene should be a prime example. It felt like them just needing to get the rest of the Mane Six out of the way for whatever reason. Not the most loyal thing to be sure, though it can be seen as somewhat in character since she seems to be even less comfortable around Discord than everyone else.
In the bats episode she only cared about the bats' distruction because it affected HER beloved apple cider. That is very self centered and doesn't represent a loyal attitude.Played for comic effect, and she expressed sympathy at AJ's having to give up her chances at competing in whatever apple contest she was talking about. Applejack is her friend and she's helped her with farm related stuff loads of times.
In general, she almost never pitches in to help unless it causes her personal gain. She dropped everything to follow Spike across the country to make sure he was safe along with Twilight and Rarity, willingly agreed to be Scootaloo's role model and to provide care for her, and again dropped everything to go get her when she wasn't going to compete with her fellow crusaders. Just thought of those off the top of my head, and I'm sure I can come up with plenty more. Dash doesn't need profit to help people, she does it because she has a good heart.
In the moments where she does demonstrate loyalty I feel it is very forced by the writers and wouldn't occure naturally by a pony with Rainbow Dash's personality. Can't argue with an opinion, but it does frustrate me to see you writing off several of her best moments as out of character.
And to build off what Sugar Cube said above, Rainbow Dash is not more honest than Applejack. Bluntness does not equal honesty for one, and for another, Dash has this front that she feels she needs to keep up. That's why she won't admit she's scared/express affection for her tortoise/admit she likes a freaking book in public. I feel Rainbow Dash is if anything, not very true to herself a lot of the time, and part of her growing up in the show has been being more comfortable in expressing herself. Hardly something an Element of Honesty should need to do, I wouldn't think.
Not saying Dash has never been untrue to her element, but I feel that she's proven herself more than worthy of it in episodes like Wonderbolt Academy, The Last Roundup, and with all the times she's been there for her friends. AJ is pretty dang loyal herself and I feel she could qualify for the job too. Still, I don't feel that that makes Dash less of a character.

Will watch the remaining two episodes tomorrow because my eyes are dead tired right now.
Know the feeling well (hugs)
Edit: I just finished up with episode 10, and HomuHomu (?) has just earned major points from me for being awesome. Didn't think I'd ever find her cute or relatable or even tragic, but it happened. Well done. Awesome points must also be awarded to Gen Urobuchi and Akiyuki Shinbo for their superb writing and direction throughout. Amazed at how much poignancy and style they managed to pack into what was essentially a 23 minute info dump. And very true. Episode ten is partially so great for making everything before it even better, in my opinion. So many interactions and conversations have to be interpreted differently. There's this one where Madoka is mourning Mami and talking to Homura and says to her "Homura, I'll never forget everything you've done for me" or something like that. It gets me every time
:(
:(. And Homura tenses up and leaves and...

Now I'm gonna hit some of my favorite scenes from my favorite show, Madoka Magica. I highly recommend it to anybody who hasn't seen it yet.
Spoilers for episode seven
Can't find a video of it, but Kyoko's past was incredibly eye-opening and surprising. Up until that point, we'd only seen an asshole who preached wholeheartedly how caring for anyone but yourself will only make you miserable. And then you found out that she had a very good reason for thinking this, and that all of her idealism had been chewed up and spat in her face in basically the worst way possible. From the shock revelation to the art style of the flashback, it was an incredible scene.
Also later on in the episode
When Sayaka completely loses it when fighting Elsa Maria (the witch where everything in her labyrinth is all black and whitish), just because the music was beautiful and for a split second you really thought everything was going to be ok, and that Kyoko was going to take care of everything. It's a very messed up scene and I love it, even if I feel awful for Sayaka and how she's lost all desire to take care of herself, and even live really.
Adding onto that, the animation and music are really really beautiful. It's this moment when you see that the revelation that they've lost their souls and that she might never be with the one she loved, has completely taken away all her will to live. It also shows that she's determined to pursue her self-destructive path to the bitter end
Spoilers for episode nine
After the heartbreaking sight of witnessing Sayaka turning into a witch, it was actually really touching to see Kyoko gain some of her old idealism back and commit to trying to save her, even if there didn't seem to be any chance. Her choice to die with her also was really beautiful and sad, and went a long way towards showing how far she's come
Spoilers for episode 12
Madoka's making her wish. A big complaint people have with Madoka, both the show and the character, was how long it took for her to get involved. That's the entire point though. The whole time Homura is preventing her from doing so, and when she finally can't anymore, Madoka shows how far she's come in finding something worth trading everything for. After seeing so much despair, she's gladly willing to spend the rest of her existence appearing to suffering girls and being a ray of hope for them. She took the messed up system that everyone was trapped in, broke it, and made something better for everybody. It really showed her unending compassion for everyone and it's quite beautiful to see
From the movie, Rebellion
That Mami/Homura fight. Perfect music, really epic, enough said
Also, Sayaka's return was great too. Her and Kyoko's
shippyreconnection was wonderful. Seeing how she's accepted and mastered the darker parts of herself, come to terms with what she's done and grown stronger for it was amazing as well. She's far more confident and at home with herself, and that's a stark and great contrast to the confused and miserable girl we say so much of the time in the show.

To one or two songs, yeah. Just out of curiosity. Maps is the only one I can really remember. Her actual singing voice is really pretty and I can hear a lot of Applejack in it

They really weren't. A degree of nostalgia is to be expected of course, but I do feel like S1 and S2 had this sort of atmosphere about them that I can't really put into words very well. Something about the way the characters interacted felt very special a lot of the time, and that's what generated my interest in the show in the first place, and I'm not sure if I can feel it to the same extent now. Whether that comes from an actual change in the feel of things, or my just being a lot more excited and enthusiastic about MLP in general back then is up for debate of course. I think it is telling though that possibly my favorite episode this season, Apple Family Reunion, is one that I've heard people say wouldn't feel out of place in Season 1.
I recognize that each season has their issues. S1 was still building the world and figuring out how things worked a lot of the time, S2 had a couple rougher portions and issues with portraying characters at times, S3 was short and quality dropped off a little over halfway through, and S4 is the most up and down season yet. They're all enjoyable too though, and I still have to call the first two seasons my favorites. If anyone thinks I'm being blinded by my love of "the good old days" or whatever, then I don't know what I can say to convince them, or even if they're wrong at all. It's just my opinion.
What I said above about each season's flaws was also my opinion, and I recognize that some people will disagree, and I'm not really interested in debating that here. Whatever the case, I'm willing to acknowledge whatever is wrong with the first two seasons and still call them my favorites so far.

If we see Gilda again, I might like for it to be a flashback with filly Dash. The episode seems to imply that they were once pretty close, and during their time apart Dash has grown up a bit and that Gilda has probably done the opposite. It makes me more and more curious how their friendship started and what they were like when they were young.
I think that if we see Gilda again in the show, in present time, she'll likely be even worse than the last time that we saw her. The fact that her behavior had likely worsened over the time she and Dash were apart, as well as her only acting up and doing the rotten things that fans loathe her for when Dash was absent or distracted (knowing she wouldn't approve), points to Dash possibly being a good influence on Gilda. Now that that's gone, who knows what she'll act like.
A while ago somebody floated the idea of her competing in the Equestria Games, and Dash eventually throwing the race and letting her win for some loyalty based reason, and I wouldn't mind that. Whether or not she ends up redeemed, she still feels like she has a good amount of potential.

Also, and I realize I may appear foolish since I have not completed the series and am therefore uninformed, but Sayaka is totally Best Magical Girl.
No you've definitely got this right ^^. Took me a while to settle on her as my favorite, but rewatching certain scenes and the movie really did her a lot of service.
Hope you enjoy the rest

I never watched Gurren Lagann but the scene where Kamina dies is pretty amazing. I'm actually kind of interested in Gurren Lagann because of this
Oh man, you really should. No other series can pump me up to that degree. It took me a long time, but I just got around to marathoning it a few weeks ago
.
One of my new ones has to be in Funimation's dub of OP when Luffy kicks Lucci's backside. Skip to 1:26:Still so damn satisfying.
Anyhoo, since Space Woona got me in a Gurren Lagannish mood, I'm just gonna be posting a couple scenes from that and hit my other favorite shows later.
Spoilers for Gurren Lagann Episode 11
This is sort of like the scene Space Woona posted above, except for me about a billion times better. Simon started off as a timid kid who would sooner run and hide than face up to any problems, and after his surrogate bother/role model Kamina died, he was devastated and became more or less empty. This is the triumphant moment where he embraces who he is, decides to stop grieving for Kamina's death, steps out of his shadow and proves that he can be someone his friends can depend upon. He just says it best himself.
Bro is dead. He's no longer here. However, on my back, and in my heart he continues to live on! Digging a hole to pierce the heavens. Even in a grave I'll keep drilling on. And if I break through then it's my victory! Who the hell do you think I am? I'm Simon, not by big brother. I am myself! SIMON THE DIGGER! GIGA...DRILL...BREAKER!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
It's just one of the awesomest ways to show how a character has grown, and seeing him cast away all his doubts and commit to rising up and being even better than the dead hero they all looked up to is really quite inspirational. Who knew killing stuff with drills could be so touching
And this one has spoilers for pretty much the entire show
Later, when all the characters are trapped in an illusion created from the villains, Kamina comes back and appears to them from beyond the grave to snap them out of it, reject the lives of fake happiness being used to control them, and to keep fighting on. I wasn't expecting him to come back at all, and what a time to do it. His reunion with Simon was really feelsy and amazing, and that soundtrack
. Libera Me From Hell will always be one of my favorite songs from any show, even if it might seem over the top or cheesy in its rap-operaness

Actually, counter-question: Am I the only one who finds the show's songs in general to be kind of 'meh'? They're catchy, don't get me wrong, but very rarely will a song's melody or lyrics stick in my head. Seems like "Smile, Smile, Smile" is one of the most revered songs in the fandom, and I personally thought it was...kind of...uh...banal bubblegum pop crap.
Most of them don't stick with me. Throwing out one thing about the Smile song though, I agree that from a lyrical and musical standpoint it's nothing jaw-dropping, "I really am so happy
, your smile fills me with glee
, I give a smile I get a smile and that's so special to me
, cause I love to make you beam, beam, beam
...", but I still like it because it's basically Pinkie expressing as best she can what she lives to do, and it does a good job of showing how much everyone around her appreciates that. More of what the song is than what it sounds like, if that makes any sense
.
Answering the thread's question, nah. Barring musical episodes like last week's, I don't think songs are any more common than they used to be. This season's even introduced some of my favorite songs, like the Bat one (ignoring its silly attempts at demonizing AJ's side of the argument), Apples to the Core and Pinkie's Lament. Not bothering me any, and if they keep at the current pace and keep the quality up, super.
Give the rainbow pone a song though please:c-

At risk of saying something kinda cheesy, I'd have to say my friend Stellafera. She makes some amazing PMVs and continues to amaze me with how much she's improved over time, and with how creative she can be. No musician or animator can stack up to that, and definitely no YouTube analyzer. Y'all should look some of her stuff up, by the way.

I love the music from this show. Especially when it's this touching ;3
That's a really good one, yeah
. I really loved the music playing when
Kirino and Kyousuke had their confrontation with Manami at the end
but can't find it anywhere :c
what are some of your favorite scenes from it?I really liked it when
Kyousuke defended Kirino's hobbies to their father, just because it showed how far he's willing to go for her even if she treats him like shit. Bonus points for managing to be both touching and hilarious at the same time

More or less what Stellafera said earlier in this thread. I don't think I've grown harsher on episodes at all, this season is just frustrating in the way it bounces all over the place in quality. At least so far, it's churned out some of my favorite episodes ever and some that I kind of wish I could forget about. I'm hoping it'll stabilize out sooner or later, in the good sense of course.

To spare you the trauma of rewatching Games Ponies Play, that's right. In that episode the Mane Six secured The Crystal Empire as the location for the Equestria Games.
