Backstory:
Growing up in Cloudsdale, Stardust never really felt like she fit in. Every pony was obsessed with the weather and how they were going to be preparing for each season.

She didn't care what the season was like all she wanted to do was lay on a cloud and make pictures in the stars. She loved the stars from the first time she saw one. It streaked past her window and the blazing light caught her eye and all she wanted to do was fly after it.

Her parents worked in the cloud factory and her mom was somewhat pushing her into sports and other activities that would get her ready for busting clouds or any other type of weather job.
Her dad knew though, that she wasn't like the rest. He saw how she would look at the night sky and how much love she had for the stars. At the end of his shift he would always make an extra soft and fluffy cloud just for her and fly it right up to her bedroom window so she could have a soft place to lay and enjoy the night sky.

As she grew her love deepened, she began going down to Ponyville and using the library for research on any and all information pertaining to the stars and planets and the universe.

She would spend hours there and by the end of the day be begging for more, she would bring books home and hide them from her mother who thought she was out busting clouds with the other Pegasus.

Her father would keep her secret and would support her in every way, he even got her, her very own telescope for her 16th birthday. She treasures that telescope more than anything in the world. She would use it every night and after learning about charting stars she began creating her own maps and charts.

One morning she woke up to find that she had gotten her cutie mark! She was beyond happy and flew to the factory to tell her father, but there had been a horrible accident and no one was allowed inside.

Frantically she was pacing back and forth waiting for news about her parents, she was finally stopped and the factory foreman came to talk to her. She was told that her mother was okay and that she would be allowed to go home soon as she had been talked to, however, the accident had involved her father and he was at the Ponyville hospital in surgery.

She had fallen to the ground in a state of shock and her mother flew out to embrace her. Together they flew to the hospital and waited for any news about her father.

After hours of waiting the doctor came out to talk with them, he had told them that he had lost a lot of blood and one of his wings was so badly hurt that they couldn't save it, he was in the intensive care unit due to blood loss and multiple fractures. The doctor said that if he did survive he wouldn't be able to fly and he would have to consider another career.

Stardust and her mother stayed by her fathers side until he woke up. He was in excruciating pain and could hardly speak. He told his wife he loved her and when he looked at Stardust a tear fell down his cheek as he noticed her cutie mark. And through the pain he embraced her and whispered "You are my shining star."

Her father did recover and he was in fairly good shape after everything had healed. He was a bit off balance due to the loss of his right wing but to balance himself he carried a saddle bag to counter his left wing.

Because he couldn't fly any longer they moved to Ponyville and he started selling apples in the market for the apple farm that was on the outskirts of town.

Stardust's mother still worked in the cloud factory and Stardust kept studying and exploring her new town.

One afternoon she came across an old abandoned building and her curiosity got the better of her and she found a way in. After trying to let some light in through some boarded up windows she finally realized what this room was.

It was an old observatory that still housed the original telescope. With pure filly like excitement she flew back to the house as fast as she could and looked for her lock box that she had hidden away. It was full of money she earned from foal sitting and other odd jobs. She then flew to the town hall to find out who still owned the observatory.

She found out that the owner had died and he had left it to his granddaughter who by chance still lived in town. She got the address and flew to her fathers apple stand to tell him the good news and that she wanted him to go with her to the mares house.

They got there and as they were discussing the building she was explaining how she was hoping someone would want to buy it and tare it down because it was such an eyesore. She also said that she was going to be moving out of Ponyville in the next week and she was happy that someone finally took interest in the property.

Stardust was glad to take the deed from her and she gave her all of the money she had saved, the mare said that it wasn't quite enough and Stardust swore that it was all there. While Stardust counted the bits over again her father slipped the mare the difference and before she was done counting the mare said it was her mistake and that the deed was now in good hooves with Stardust.

Starting that day Stardust started to fix up the observatory. It took a few years to complete but on her 19th birthday, it was finally done. She moved in and made it her home.

She knew she had to find a job and so she took the train to Canterlot to the University to talk with the dean and the astrology and astronomy departments. She showed them all of the charts she had made from the time she was little until now and they were very impressed that such a young mare was so gifted in this science. She was hired on the spot and was given projects and deadlines on her charts that were needed for research, or that was needed for the departments.

To this day she diligently works to maintain the charts and to do research on any types of changes that might occur, or for any comets that will be in the area and in what month, year, and such.

She still visits her parents on a regular basis and her father is growing weaker and her mother had to quit work in order to help him. Stardust helps with their bills and tries to cheer her father up when she is over.

She knows there is limited time left with him and she wants to make every moment count. He loves to hear about her discoveries and he is always so proud of her and lights up whenever she comes to visit.

At the end of each visit he always embraces her and whispers, "You are my shining star."
