Fhaolan 4,493 July 2, 2014 Share July 2, 2014 Hi all, I'm trying to write a short MLP fanfic, and realized it would be nice if one character (a gryphon) said a few things in one of the Nordic languages. I could use an automated translator, but I know those mess up nuance and idioms so badly that it's close to unreadable. The character will be using heavily accented English most of the time, but when he's first introduced I'm prefer him to use his 'native' language as he's supposed to be startled and forget where he is. It doesn't really matter which Nordic language, as it's just my attempt to approximate something. However, I'd prefer the grammar and words make sense in *some* language as I'd feel it would be a bit insulting to just use nonsense. So if anyone can help me with this, I'd really appreciate it. I'm going to include a bit of context in case there's some idiom or phrasing that would be better changed to fit. The character encounters the Cutie Mark Crusaders outside during a blizzard: "Children? Why are there children out here?" The character forcefully asks the CMC to lead him to Ponyville: "Take me to the horse village!" That's pretty much it. From that point on he remembers that ponies speak a different language, and I'll be using the heavily accented English instead. Although it would be useful to have a couple of oath-type 'swears' on hand in case the character gets upset later in the fic. Thanks all!
websterhamster 203 July 4, 2014 Share July 4, 2014 (edited) How about Dovahzul? It's the dragon language from Skyrim, in case you didn't know. It shares many features with the Nordic languages, and has a very unique feel to it. I'd love to help you translate, if you want. EDIT: Here's a sample using your text above: "Kiirre? Fahvos los til kiirre tir het?" and "Kuz zey wah key sahsun!" My favorite line in Dovahzul that I've ever written: Waan mu nahlok, mu fent faas ni. You know, that never occurred to me, using a fictional but developed language. I might just do that! Thanks! Are there any quick, one-word oaths in that language that I can sprinkle into the story? Vik, ruth, and draaf mean damn, rage, and crap respectively. Most other curses or oaths in Dovahzul use more words. Fhaolan 4,493 July 4, 2014 Author Share July 4, 2014 Vik, ruth, and draaf mean damn, rage, and crap respectively. Most other curses or oaths in Dovahzul use more words. That works for me. I only write *short* stories, so I don't want to take up too much of the reader's time with other languages. I'm about a fourth of the through my first pass through the story (past the outline), and I'm a slow writer, so I'm not sure when it will be done. Thanks!
