First OC Attempt

Overdrive

I've been freehand sketching for years now, but it's usually something mechanical, such as automobiles, motorcycles, or the like.

This is my first OC, let alone my first pony art. The only thing I'm hung up on is a name. I can't think of a good name.

The inspiration for the OC was primarily my personal interests, and how I actually think I would look if I was "ponified." I guess you could say he's part Rock 'N' Roll/Metal fan, part gearhead, a bit of steampunk (mad scientist/retro welding glasses), and a bit of hipster (gauges in ears).

He is 100% hand drawn, all freehand (yes, I have really bad writer's cramp), and could probably use improvement.

It looks good, especially for first timer.

You did somethings that a lot of people completely faff up the first time around, and that's good.
He's not an alicorn, he isn't colored in eye bleeding colors, he isn't a recolor, and he doesn't have rainbows everywhere.

Let alone the fisrt time, some peope do it the 50th time around, lol.

I like the mane, something I don't see often (or ever), but I think the tail could be styled in a way more similar to the mane.

You could also darken the green just slightly, and make the fur a bit more pale (though, this is done in traditional, and the colors you're looking for aren't qquite as easy to make, and I apologize if you meant anything different.

You say it's the first time you've drawn a pony? Well excellent job, you got the anatomy down well, and you are showing creativity with the design. These are things I cannot say I managed the first time around.

This picture is very :yay:

Congratulations, here is a :mustache:

I'll be honest, I've studied a bit of other fan art, and I noticed a lot of traditional elements everywhere. I wanted to do something outside of the box, something that would catch people off-guard, and something that would stand out.

The popping colors were done intentionally, as was the mane (liberty spike Mohawk anyone?). The only reason the tail turned out as it did was that my hand was absolutely killing me. That's probably the biggest downside to freehand sketching.

I'm definitely going to tweak the design, maybe even play with the idea of a singed/burned tail, see where that takes him. I still need to figure out a name, as well as develop a more detailed cutie mark. In my spare time I guess.

He is a good start, but even just the little tweaks (shorter mane, goggles moved to forehead, chain necklace, singed tail) I think will make him better. I'm probably going to mute the colors of his fur a bit, maybe not as bright.

I'm also debating on ditching the typical pegasus wings in favor of more angular, phoenix-like wings. Haven't really decided on that yet.

Who knows, if I keep working at it, and hone in on a final design, I could have him commissioned into a one-of-a-kind plushie. One step at a time, I suppose.

Honestly, I originally did it just to see where I could push the design boundaries. I wanted to see if I could not only blend myself into the MLP universe somehow, but also what human interests, hobbies and the like could be blended into it.

He's the first (definitely won't be the last), and he pretty much is me, personified in pony form.

I'll say this much: there is a lot more cooking up in my head, and the OC's are only going to get bolder and better. My first stood out, and my intention is for each and every one after to stand out in different ways.

@,

Well, a good OC takes time.

That, or you open up0 a thread where thirty other people mash in random elements to get this... thing, in my profile pic.

Still just beautiful

My thing is, I'm one of those people where I will never fully finish something. What I mean by that is I'm always tweaking, always improving, and always adding to something that's already pretty dang good as it is. Whether it be the poetry I write, the music I drum up (pun intended), and now the pony art I envision, truthfully it never will be finished. I can only get close to finish.

Wow, that's one good well made OC.

Very creative, nice color scheme, and this was your first attempt? I spent like 30 times changing just the color scheme of my OC xD. And I did him in ponycreator, so he's not really that creative in reality, but I lack art skills to do anything fancy like yourself.

But really, very well done OC.

As for a name, idk.. Maybe Manehawk?

I got nothing much other than that, i'm not good with names really xD.

But seriously, great job!

Oops sorry it's sideways

Yeah, I don't know why it's sideways. Probably because I took the picture with my iPhone.

Finding a name has probably been the hardest part of doing the OC. There's one name that I keep coming back to, and I think I'm going to run with it and see what happens.

His name is Overdrive. A few other ideas were tossed around (Torque Wrench, Oil Slick, Afterburner, Backdraft, Horsepower, Feedback...) but I think Overdrive fits the best.

I think toning down the colors definitely helped. Using a duller base color, as well as deeper highlights I think creates a more complete, finished look.

I think Overdrive is about as complete as he's going to get. His goggles were moved up to his forehead, a chain was added around the neck, his tail is permanently burned and damaged, his ear is disformed. All of which makes him more complete. I'm very pleased with how he came out. Now to start brainstorming for the next OC.
