Public Health - What do you know or think about it?

Some people might remember me bringing that up in the debate pit -- possibly ad nauseum...

So here I am just asking what is it you know about Public Health as a field or practice. Some additional questions for clarification.

 

What comes to mind when you hear the term?

What do you think its goals are?

How do you believe it execute its practices or what the tools are?

What relevance do you believe it to have (in society)?

 

Just to be clear, I'm seeing this as more of a survey than anything else. If there was an option to allow users to post here anonymously at their own discretion, I would allow for it.

What I think about when I hear the term "public health" is the disturbing extent to which medicine has been hijacked by big pharma, there was this swine flu fear mongering a few years ago and you can literally count the number of people that died on one hand while there is this Ebola epidemic in Africa and the mainstream media is barely mentioning anything about that. People are taking more pills and vaccines than ever before yet they are sicker than ever before and I don't think that is a coincidence. There is all this crap in the food, air and water and the "cure" being presented to people is only poisoning them further.

I think it's different between countries. The country is supposed to care for it's citizens, to a certain degree anyway. Various drugs and treatments may be sponsored, others taken away. Health specialists usually advise on whether or not to add or remove something. Public clinics and hospitals do what they can, obviously they're sometimes understaffed - that's the case around here sometimes.
