Trying to make a banner for the site

I personally use Photoshop CS6. Before that though, I simply used a free program called GIMP. It's got the basics of Photoshop but not as many special features as Photoshop.

It is not the tool which makes beautiful art, but the human being who uses that tool.

A good artist will handle with any tool whatsoever. So use whatever you like and know how to use.

MLP:FiM ponies are mostly vector art, so personally I use a free software called Inkscape. It is very powerful and comfortable to use. When I have my vectors right, sometimes I also use GIMP (also free) to add some raster touch to it, but only for the things which cannot be done in vectors.

But as I've said, I worked in many different tools in my life, and I could handle in any of them in the same way. My current preferences are rather dictated by the fact that Inkscape and GIMP are free (as in free beer, and as in free speech), open source (so that I can trust them that they do what I want and there's no trojans in there), and because they're native to my operating system (Linux/GNU; but there are Windows and MacOS X versions too).

Edit: Here's an example banner I made in Inkscape for this forum before Season 4 finale; a little joke about Trixie finding the last key instead of Twilight ;)

Unfortunately, it has never been accepted, but oh well... life goes on ;J I decided to turn it into a fanfc or web comic instead.
