Change the hair, eyes, and face to be different from Rainbow Dash's. If you want to make the character male, draw him like a male character. (Square muzzle, circular eyes from side, etc.) If you're feeling adventurous, you could also make the character's body type or head shape different from everyone else's (Like the Cakes family, Big Macintosh, Shining Armor, etc.)

You might look at some of the bases also to get an idea of

how it might it look and what you might want/  Also the pony

maker has a lot of male heads too if you want to mess with

a lot of things.   You could maybe use this pic also of a "younger self"

and than have him grow up!
