movies/tv Similarities between Champloo and Bebop?

Champloo has been one of my favorite shows for years, but I just started watching Cowboy Bebop recently. 

 

I told my cousin about it and his reaction was "Why bother? It's the exact same thing as Champloo". 

 

I've seen about 20 episodes in to bebop and I'm just not seeing it. I understand that they are roughly the same "type" of show. I also have created a loose connection between Mugen and Spike, simply because the look similar and are voiced by the same guy (sounds like it at least). 

 

Anyone know what he's talking about without ruining anything for me?

I've watched both series, and I haven't seen any real similarities between the two...

 

Animation wise, the series Trigun is VERY similar to Cowboy Bebop
