How extensive was Tirek? Changelings? Griffons? or just ponies?

It makes little sense that he would have just taken the magic out of all the unicorns, pegasi, earth ponies, and Discord.  The changelings had quite a bit of magic available.  Then there is the flight ability of griffons (while their wingspans are greater than a pegasus they still aren't sufficient).  Changeling society would be hit even harder than the ponies if their magic was extracted.

I think it was just ponies. Not once did he or anyone else use a term that wasn't 'equines' or 'ponies', and he didn't have that much time to march around. It'd take him as long as it did if not longer to just go to all the various cities and towns in Equestria to steal magic, even with Discord's help in teleportation. Discord got drained from a situationl advantage, not because Tirek was seeking him out.

 

I think the core point here is that if he stayed in power, no doubt everyone would have been drained on the entire continent eventually. But I think he wanted to completely knock out the Earth Ponies, Pegasi, Unicorns and Alicorns before anyone else, because they're the largest and main presence in Equestria, so in the limited amount of time he had before he was defeated, he only managed to steal the pone magic, hadn't yet gone to other species.

I think Griffons do not need any magic to fly and that they have no magic at all. They are just a weird combination of animals we see on Earth and on top of that they have human level intelligence. Tirek wouldn't be taking any magic from them.

 

Changelings would offer him a lot though but nothing would beat what he gets in Equestria from all the three pony races.

 

What I'm saying is that he must have decided that going to the lands outside Equestria was not worth it because he was getting all the power he needed from Equestria anyway. If he really needed some more, he could go invade Changeling territory but as we saw on the show, he didn't get to be powerful for too long so I doubt he got the chance to take magic from areas outside Equestria.

In that case, he could have retreated from Twilight with them evenly matched, and drained changelings, griffons, and whatever else he could find, then blast Twilight.

Griffons walk on clouds just fine -- so they do have some magic.  They are also as fast as pegasi going by the equestria games where they got bronze.  Something the size and weight of a griffon could never fly like that even with the greater wingspan.  They might need less magic to have the same level as pegasi but magic they would certainly need.

I think he only went after ponies; his main goal was to steal Alicorn magic so that he could have enough power to essentially be unrivaled. I think he went after Unicorns, Pegasi and Earth Ponies collectively so that he could have enough power to take the Princesses down. I don't think he would ever even want to go after any magic of any other races; after he had the Alicorn magic, his domination of the world would essentially be complete. Unless of course he was a complete magical glutton, in which case he would absolutely go for every last scrap of magic in the world.

IMO, Griffons must have some magic for the same reason Pegasi do -they are just too big to fly without it.  It is unclear just how much magic Tirek sucked up.  Still, if he drained Discord then he must have the ability to drain everyone not just ponies.
