Her actions made Random smirk.  While he didn't have his brother's personal confidence, he still was able to summon a lopsided grin of his own.  "No problem!  having some personal company will make this cell that much more comfortable."  He dropped onto the bed, ignoring the worn down mattress.  "Cozy," he muttered, trying to relax...

She didn't go to sleep, but instead secretly acted as though she'd really fallen asleep. She wanted to test if he was going to try and escape, as it was an old tradition that guards used to try and see who would go somewhere first. So, she continued to await to see if he thought she'd fallen asleep.

Random laid back against the mattress, starring at the ceiling, and trying to figure out what he was going to do next.  I wonder what she plans to do with me, he thought, if she's going to keep me trapped in here, or let me out in the morning.  Deciding to just sleep it off, he closed his eyes.  But the presence of the bat-mare kept him up.  I've never had a mare this close to me while sleeping before, he was thinking.  It made him a bit nervous, which kept him awake.  He fidgeted on the bed, trying to relax.  But sleep continued to elude him....

Seeing him not react, she started to formulate some ideas on why he was really here. She blinked a little bit, still not entirely sure what to actually say at this point. She knew that he was the one trying to spy, but there was something off about him. IT seemed rather strange that he wasn't trying ot escape... could he be telling the truth?

While trying to fall asleep, Random wondered about what was going on.  This entire situation was way over his head, something he never thought he'd ever be involved in.  He cracked an eye open, and noticed the mare still watching him, like she was waiting for something.  Maybe she thinks I'm going to try to get away? he asked himself.  But Random new better.  Just sit tight, and in the morning they'll let me go.  At least, he hoped so....

~The Following Morning~

Giving a little groan, the bat pony got another note back. She sighed, "Alright, the princess wants to see you. She also warns you that, though she would prefer not to, she will, if she has to, use a mind reading spell and figure out your motives." She pulled out a pair of hoof cuffs. She opened up the cell door, "Let's get going."

With a yawn, Random stretched, and climbed off the small mattress.  "Good morning to you too," he said to the bat-mare.  Then, he noticed the cuffs she was holding.  "Do I really need to wear those?" he asked, then put on his most sincere face.  "I'm not going to run off or anything, honest!"

--------

Meanwhile, a tan colored mare approaching the castle was fighting off a yawn of her own.  Being awoken in the middle of the night my messenger bird wasn't something she was used too.  Nor was the early-morning trip down from Canterlot, but orders were orders.  I'm just glad that bribe was enough, she thought.  Random has no idea how much we pay to solve his problems.  Personally, she believed her duties back in Canterlot were more important, but Random was her boss's brother, so exceptions were made.

A stallion guard stopped her approach.  "I have papers for the release of a pony being held here," she told him, before removing the scroll from her small saddlebag.  "His name is Random Action.  Please have him brought to me right away."

Blinking a little bit, she growled and stared into her eyes, "Why? who wrote the warrant?" She took the scroll and read it over, verifying that it was, indeed, valid. She groaned a little bit and pulled the cuffs off of the captured stallion, "There, go ahead and take him away." she pushed random to the mare.

Both surprise and relief made themselves home on Random's face.  I'm being released already? he thought.  But who-  Then he noticed the the mare standing just outside waiting for him.  "Sakuya!  What are you doing here?"

"What do you think?" she asked, annoyed.  "Getting you out of trouble again."

"It isn't my fault!" he protested.  "Ennex said he want-"

"Be quiet!" she ordered, eyeing Echo and the other stallion guard.  "Follow me back to town."

"Uh, ok."  He followed her away from the castle, but turned back for a moment.  At least I got to meet a bat pony, he reasoned with himself.  Never met one of them before.  Too bad we couldn't talk more.  Maybe I'll see her around Ponyville.

Sakuya grunted, interrupting his thoughts.  "Look, I have to get back to Canterlot on the next train.  There is a message waiting for you when you get home."

"You're not staying?" he asked, confused.  He'd always liked Sakuya, and had made it a goal to make her laugh.  But his brother's shadow seemed to always follow her, keeping him at a distance.

"No," she replied.  "Ennex wanted me to, but I have duties back at the office.  Besides," she looked around, "I prefer the city to out here.  Just try to stay out of trouble, ok?"

"Sure!  No prob," he said, glancing back at the palace again.

"And stay away from that bat-pony," she ordered.  "She's a guard, and we don't need to keep bailing you out.  Got it?"

"Sure, sure," he conceded, head hanging low.  "Fine," Sakuya said, "well, later."  Turning down a different path, she headed towards the train station, while Random turned to head into Ponyville.  Think I'll go to Sugarcube Corner, get some breakfast, he thought....

Echo made her way back to her post. Something was off about how quickly he was released, why he was. He was someone's pawn, who probably didn't know how to hurt a fly but was good enough to spy. She left her spear and took her knife, then began to secretly stalk them.

She heard the conversation an She gasped, scribbling down notes in her mind. She made her way back to castle to make her report!

Random made his way down the streets of Ponyville, just trotting along and smiling to anypony around him.  In the distance, he could hear a train whistle.  Guess that's Sakuya, heading home, he thought, again disappointed she didn't stay longer.  Oh, stop it, he told himself, she belongs to you brother, remember?  He shook the thought away, and focused at the task at hand, which was acquiring breakfast.  After a few more minutes, he came to Sugarcube Corner.  "Maybe I'll have some lemon muffins!" he said, pushing open the door.  The place wasn't that full, and he took a seat an an empty table....

After submitting her report to the guard depot, she walked out and saw the very edge of Sakuya leaving. She gently took flight and followed her, suspicious now. Something about a brother and it was confirmed that Random was an agent, albeit he didn't want to kill or do anything bad. She flew after Sakuya until they reached the outskirts of town, where she called, "Halt! I have some questions for you on behalf of the royal guard of Twilight Sparkle!"

Startled by the arrival of the bat-pony guard, Sakuya stumbled.  "Questions?" she asked, "What questions?"  She eyed the armored mare in front of her.  "What would a Royal Guard want we me?"  Random, what have you stirred up here? she asked herself.  What does Ennex have you doing around Twilight's palace?  While she was her boss's top assistant, it didn't mean he told her everything.  Secrecy was part of the job, and since she was legally employed by his family-controlled business, there was nothing that she could be convicted of.  At least, nothing that anypony new about....

Trotting up to her, she sat down beside her, "Upon investiagtion, it was discovered you were mentioning another party involved with the spy, Random Act. Would you like to impart information on his identity, or would you like to follow me back to the castle and have the informtion forced out of you?" She growled, "I'm fine with either option."

Oh, you have GOT to be kidding me! Sakuya shouted in her mind.  This little guard is trying to intimidate me?!  Intimidation was part of her job description, and a skill she'd used many times against 'business rivals'.  Her eyes narrowed.  Calm down, she told herself, she's fishing for info, she doesn't have anything.  "Look," she began, slowly and firmly, her voice full of confidence, "I don't know what Random was up to.  All I know is my boss is Random's twin brother, and he sent me here to bail him out."  She gave the guard a stern look.  "If you want to travel to Canterlot to confirm that, be my guest.  But somepony might wonder why a lowly guard is investigating one of Equestria's wealthiest businesses."  Deciding to take control of the situation, she turned her back on the guard.  "Now, if you don't mind, I have a train to catch."  With confidence, she trotted off towards the station...

She looked to her and nodded, "Fine..." She weighed her options: go with a mare whom she barely knew and possibly get hurt or end up in the middle of the city with no money or support, or go back to the castle and report the suspicious behavior. She went with the latter and left her alone, "Good day to you then, have a nice trip back."

He finished off his third lemon muffin, washing it down with a gulp of apple juice.  "Ahhh," Random sighed, enjoying the flavor.  A nice glass of apple juice was his favorite drink in the morning.  He and Ennex were raised on it, their father believing it was a better wake-up beverage then coffee or anything else with caffeine.  With a few more gulps, he finished the glass, and almost instantly, an pink blue appeared at his side.

"Need another?" asked Pinkie Pie.

"Yes please," Random answered, placing thee glass onto a tray that was strapped onto her head.  He laughed, and turned to watch the ponies outside going about their business....

Echo made her way back to the town, when her stomach growled. As she was technically now off duty (her shift ended when the sun arose), she had missed her evening meal and she felt extremely hungry. She made her way over to the SugarCube Corner and walked inside. She didn't notice Random and walked up to Pinkie, 'Hello Pinkie, the usual, three chocolate chip muffins please." She dropped the necessary bits down for her.

The sound of somepony entering the shop caught his attention, and as Random turned, his jaw nearly hit the floor.  It's her! his thought screamed.  What's she doing here?  Come to arrest me again?  But as he watched, it was clear she was there for her own meal, and didn't notice him.  He started to get up, but then Sakuya's words came to mind.  "...stay away from that bat-pony... we don't need to keep bailing you out."  He sighed, but decided to ignore the warning.  My brother isn't here.  Besides, how could joining her for breakfast do any harm?  Decision made, he stepped up behind her.  "Uh, hello again," he stammered, rubbing the back of his head with his left foreleg....

Gasping, she yelped and almost dropped her little bag. She turned around and gave a little sigh, "Oh... hello." She walked over to him and sat down, "I'm sorry about last night... I'm sorry." She wasn't sure why she was apologizng, infact she should do the oppostie. She sighed a little bit.

"Hey, it's no biggie," he said, trying to calm her down.  "I mean, I shouldn't have been out there anyway.  And you were just doing your job."  He grinned.  "And it isn't the first time I've gotten into trouble.  That's why Sakuya was annoyed.  She's been sent to bail me out a few times over the years."  He sighed.  "I came here, to Ponyville, to stay out of my brother's mane.  But I keep drawing him in somehow....

She blinked a bit and the pieces started to fall together. She sighed, "I'm sorry that I went ahead nad judged you like that. It wasn't really nice of me..." She leaned in, "Yeah, I'm echo. I uh.. apolgoize again for doing all of that to you. Can we... well maybe be friends?"

His ears perked up.  "Friends?" he asked.  "Sure!  I love making new friends!"  He reached out a hoof.  "My name's Random Action."  He laughed.  "Duh, you already know that!  Sorry, I forgot all about it."  Pinkie arrived with a fresh glass of juice, gave them a smile, and hopped off.  He took a drink, then continued.  "So, Echo huh?  I like it, it suits you."  He grinned...

"Echo Locata. But I normally just go by Echo, my last name is a little werid." She blushed a bit, "It was about echolocation, that's how I found you last night." She smiled and took a muffin, biting into it, "Actually, I emit waves from my mouth and if they bounce of something moving, then I can literally tell exactly where you are."

"Echolocation, huh?" Random said, "Sounds pretty cool.  Is it just used to see at night, or can you make music or something?"  He grinned.  "Cause that would be something, like being a DJ!  I mean, you already have the mane for it!"  Suddenly, he gulped.  "Sorry, just your mane reminds me of this awesome DJ my brother and I like to go see.  Though, we haven't gone together in a few years..."  His voice trailed off, head looked down at the table, before shooting back up, eyes wide.  "I know!  Let's go see her show tonight!  Supposed to be a duet with some cello player or something.  Mixed with electronic music.  I know," he held up a hoof, "it sounds like an odd mix.  But trust me, you'll love it!"  He winked at her.  "Wad-ya say?"
