My very second attempt at vectoring. Tips welcome!

Well, I just recently decided to give vector drawing a try and I think I like it. Anyways, this is my very second attempt. I did this free hoof in Serif Drawplus SE. I did look at a reference image to help me a little, but other than that it was all me and my mouse.

Here is a rough version done in Drawplus:

And here is the version cleaned up using the GIMP. I would like to know how to get it to look like this without having to send it over to gimp, I guess I need to just practice more on the tools that Drawplus has.

Anyways, as you can see I am still very new to this stuff, so any useful tips and hints would be appreciated.

(For me, the body seems the easiest to do, then the head, and for the life of me the mane and tail get me lost...)

Thank you.

I really don't know much about vectoring for me I just draw it in photoshop but all I can say is just keep it up you will get it eventually. P.S those look great

Thank you for the encouragement!

Im the complete opposite xD

I use the curve option to make the mane and tail. There are plenty of videos that show you how to do it on YouTube. When I make the mane and tail I just observe closely a reference and copy it in the desired angle, trying to get the right volume, curves, sizes of lines, etc. I imagine how it would look from the perspective of a base and do it. Also, you did a pretty good job in this one.

Well, since I am doing this in a vector program, everything is curves :P . But yeah, a little more practice is needed.

Oh and now I have attempt number 3!

And this one is a COMMISSION! (Well, unpaid, but done as a request)

The next thing to work on is the eyes, I think those will be the biggest trouble for me...

Whatcha think?

Changed the eyes a little...

I'd say you're on the right track. I'm not familiar with the software you use here but if there is a way to

just the lines width throughout the stroke it can do a lot to help with making the piece more dynamic

and natural looking. That would be the one major 'flaw' i'd say you could work on. But for starting out

you are doing darn fine.

Also tails are created with devils magic. I hate doing tails. Manes sometimes too, but tales... every time.

I think you are doing great for your vector art. Your definitely making improvements as I scroll through here.

Things I would suggest:

-As said above me, if you could change the line to a stroke of the brush it would look alot more natural.

-On the mane and tail, a good tip to keep in mind is always think big. Make large curves for the mane and tail. The more fluffier the better and cuter xD

-The eyes don't actually look that bad, I think it would look better if the eyes were more oval vertically instead of horizontally like you have

I am unsure on how Drawplus works but I myself use gimp for my vectors. Maybe that program might help you better. Its a free program as well. Other than those things you are doing great. Keep it up  :grin2:
