cider float 2,539 February 12, 2016 Share February 12, 2016 (edited) You know how there are many female ponies vs. male ponies? If you look at the buffaloes on the other hand they all are male as I'm assuming since they all look exactly like the chief. Little Strongheart is the only female buffalo. I suppose the same can be said about the dragons that have no females so far. Since Spike was hatched from an egg it can be theorized there are female dragons just not shown. Griffons on the other hand has an equal divide in female and male.. Edited February 12, 2016 by cider float
ShadOBabe 19,027 February 12, 2016 Share February 12, 2016 (edited) These aren't the best examples. Any of those big buffalo could actually be female. They all just get that big. Little Strongheart is just young or stunted. The dragons are just a small clique of teens out of a gathering of hundreds. Human beings hang out in groups of the same gender too, but it doesn't say anything about the ratio of our whole species. And I think the griffons are actually pretty even. I saw tons of females in the background and two of the griffons at the Equestria games were female too. Lastly, I think ponies have a pretty even ratio of males to females. It was a lot more mares in the background in the early seasons, but they've been fixing at lot of details like that. Here's a screencap from Slice of Life, and if I did the counting correct, there's actually more stallions than mares here. I say that he's just a runt but people still think he isn't fully grown, I would put him at the age near those teenage dragons. Far as I'm concerned Little Strongheart is of the same age as the mane six making her fully grown since it's the norm that shows would usually have friends put in similar age or close enough age groups. Also she is called "Little" Strongheart. Also Slice of Life is just one big joke that tries to stuff as much bronydom into it anyway so not really relevant. If you're talking about characters central-wise once again those ponies are put there in for the laughs and are not the main focus of the show in total. Vixor 80 February 12, 2016 Share February 12, 2016 (edited) Background pony crowds are filled with clones and are completely unusable for determining just about anything. I'm pretty sure the gender ratio is even, and we just don't always see it because the crowds are so inconsistent and have so many clones that you couldn't hope to get an accurate picture. And the ponies are primarily monogamous, which certainly lends heavy credence to it being even. The buffaloes and dragons surely do too, but it's likely DHX didn't bother to develop female art assets or find female voice actors for them, when Spike is the only dragon that's a major character, and buffaloes are something we don't get to see much, it's not really too much of a stretch to assume they just didn't put in that many details in that regard. And Shad also makes a good point with it being potentially difficult to determine the gender of the buffaloes just by looking at them in a crowd, and that actually applies even easier to the dragons, since the vast majority of them we didn't get to see up close. Either way, the show is targeted at little girls primarily, and this means they have a bigger focus on female characters to some extent, which skews perceptions, but that doesn't mean for a second that there's somehow actually more females in Equestria itself. Again, I'm just pretty sure the ratio is even. I often give this picture as an example of how bad the clone issues are. DHX copy/pastes the crowds to save time, rather than hand-placing every single pony, that's just a fact. The results vary, but you could probably count the number of unique background pony crowds in that picture on your fingers. Has it gotten better over the seasons? Well, yes, it seems to vary from episode to episode, but it's still a significant mess pretty often, and I don't think you'll be getting anything approaching usable census data from it anytime soon.
