Starswirl- unicorn or qulin?

If Starswirl ever showed up in actual character, would he be a simple unicorn or would he be a Quilin? I know he's depicted as a unicorn in history books and such, but that could be chalked up to varying artistic interprtation of the book's illustrators, since he existed so long ago, and record of his actual appearance, beyond his recognizable wardrobe may have been lost. Its so hard for me not to think of Starswirl as, say Clow Reed http://cardcaptorsakura.wikia.com/wiki/Clow_Reedan equally talented magician who was on top of the magic charts, meddled with alternate dimensions, and had an eastern theme about him and his magic.

But what do you guys think? Should Starswirl be revealed as a quilin, or yet another OP unicorn that we've seen so many times before already?

Well, based on the Journal of the Two Sisters (the actual book itself), unicorns were around alongside Starswirl, in fact unicorns originally raised the sun (I think that was actually mentioned in the show sometime too).

I mean, they can easily retcon that, but I don't see any reason for them too. Everything we know about Starswirl implies he was a unicorn, and Celestia and Luna both did know him personally, so I'm pretty sure he is a unicorn.

it wouldn't be retconning if he was a qirin and had ONE HORN. He'd still technically be a UNI CORN. Just not so much a western looking one.

This is the part where I admit I have no idea what a qilin is..  :adorkable:

*looks it up*

That's a, umm, very unique creature and far from what I had in mind. Although, they're constantly referred to as giraffes in all of the sources I'm viewing, which seems a bit odd for a character like Starswirl. Unless I'm looking at a completely different creature which I may very well be.

they look mre like horses or dragon horses, rather than giraffes, in eastern art.

But again, artistic interpretation.

For all we know, mlp qilins may be an ascension even above Super Sayain allicorns

He's been seen in the comics, and he's a Unicorn there. I know people are going to argue about the canonocity of that, but I'm pretty sure it's been stated their considered canon until the show contradicts them. Personally I'd prefer them try to stick with things that happen in the comics when possible.

Even then, all sources in the show itself point to him being a Unicorn, so that's probably what he is. The idea of a Qulin is pretty cool though, so I wouldn't mind seeing it used for a different character.

honestly, I forgot that he appeared in Reflections arc and Fiendship is Magic, outside of storybook/flashbacks. Crap. And I do cosider comics canon.

Well....as I said in my former post, it could be shown as a state higher than an alicorn, maybe, and because hs' s Starswirl, only he's ever achieved it. Wouldn't be retconning him as a unicorn, if he ascended offscreen to alicorn, and then to qilin....

That could work, but maybe setting up a state above Alicorn's is a bit much?

Perhaps instead of a state above Alicorns, it could instead be simply a different kind of Ascension, one that is equal to but different than the Alicorns, both perhaps having different advantages over each other.

You mean a Qilin? They are often depicted differently. Sometimes they are shown as almost a type of horse, but sometimes they are shown as more of a dragon-like creature. Most often they are depicted with fire all over their body. Just like our modern version of the unicorn, they are a good omen and represent prosperity.

Fun fact: Interestingly, in traditional lore, the unicorn is actually not good and is depicted as dangerous.
