DHX might choose to do away with the royal sisters, or they might not. Who knows? But IF (I repeat, IF) they did decide to, what would be the best way do you think they would try to go about it?

 

In my own opinion, they'd try to pull a nice, serene, disipate into magic dust or nature, upon the wind scene, much like Master Oogway did, in Kung Fu Panda 2

Followed by a transition where Tri tries to cope with the loss, and begins to realize that the royal sisters are still alive in her own heart and actions, giving us a Lion King "e lives in you" -like scene

Then, finally, possibly trying to pull off a Cardcaptor Sakura twist, with the sisters having forseen and manipulated the events up to their passing, but having further trials for Twilight, so they store their previous memories in a future incarnation who continues to test the mane 6 and manipulate events, like Clow Reed /Eriol did

Given Celestia's treatment sense season 5, she might as well be written off the show.

I would expect Celestia and Luna to step down as rulers of Equestria in order for Twilight to take over, and the two of them would become traveling nomads still raising the sun and the moon.
