Frankenbrony 16 May 6, 2012 Share May 6, 2012 I still can't quite believe that I am joining this particular fanbase. I'm 25 years old, male, and not the type of person who would ordinarily be into candy colored little ponies who go to princess weddings in a magical place called Canterlot, or learn valuable lessons about how to get along with their little sisters. Usually, I like John Wayne movies, Star Trek, and things that blow up. It all started when I noticed that among my internet aquantances there seemed to be a group of otherwise normal people that were huge fans of this show. Instantly, I thought of my childhood days when little boys played with army guys and little girls played with My Little Pony dolls. I thought "OK, this must either be a joke or these guys are on drugs." But there was a thread on one of my regular forums about MLP that just wouldn't go away, and eventually my curiosity got the better of me. I decided to make a psychological experiment and see exactly what was going on in the minds of these so-called Bronies. How the heck could a healthy adult man (or woman for that matter) be so involved in a "little girl" show? It puzzled me for days, until I realized the only way to find out was to become a Brony myself. At first there was some trepidation, and nausea. The first night of my experiment, I could only get myself to watch about 5 minutes of the show before giving it up. Then the second night I watched a full episode (Look Before you Sleep), which didn't help things a whole lot but did make me appreciate some aspects of the show from an artistic standpoint. I have admired the work of these people ever since the days of Dexter's Lab and the Powerpuff Girls, and I knew that the show had potential. On the third night of my project, I watched Wedding at Canterlot. For the first 10 minutes of the show, I was still in the "Why am I watching this?" mindset. By the end of part 2, I was well on my way to being a Brony. By night 4, I had watched the Return of Harmony, and had gone from forcing myself to watch the show to not being able to stop. The odd thing is, I have gotten to the point where the plot isn't so much my focus as the charactes. Sure, I love it when the ponies are fighting awesome villains or otherwise catering to us grown-up geeks, but it seems like even the standard kids show plots have such well written characters that the plot doesn't matter. It's like those episodes of Star Trek TNG that weren't quite as imaginative, but were still good because of who was in it. The Ponies can be in the midst of the most silly cartoon like situation, and then suddenly they'll hit you from nowhere with something amazing and powerful that makes you almost want to cry. Somehow the show can speak to a little kid on a little kid's level, and yet speak to us adults more subtly on a much deeper level. You start caring about these little ponies because, somehow, they are so accurately human. Only with more humanity than the average human. And that's not to mention the amazing talent of the fan base. I have discovered a love for Brony music, and am starting to get into the fan fiction a little bit. So my experiment, in some ways, was a sucess. In other ways, I feel like Dr. Frankenstein when his project turned into a monster. Which is why I call myself Frankenbrony.

NavelColt 22,883 May 7, 2012 Share May 7, 2012 *Tips sunglasses* Well then, you are one of the many skeptics who have begun to realize why this following is as big as it is. Glad to see it. Welcome to the board, and please enjoy yourself. Apart from the downtime BS we've been having lately, this place is great: Active, friendly, and altogether well-accomplished, from what I've seen in my short time here.
