Luna, Nyx, dreams, and hierarchy

I'm actually surprised that, in spite of Luna being the most popular princess of the fandom, that few seem to want (or even know the origin of) her dream abilities explored. In FIENDship is Magic #4, the Nyx were introduced as creatures living on the moon, and being victims of Nightmare Moon's trickery to learn their techniques. Questin is, did they reach her ALL of their techniques? After all, ancient decree of theirs says that only Nyx can craft the dreams of ponies....But we clearly see Luna- not necessarily crafting dreams, but dream walking, being able to link the dreams of an entire town of ponies, and giving will to living nightmares to enter the waking world (which seems like something NMM would do).

Perhaps even more interesting is the dialogue presented by the Nyx. A knowledgeable one by the name of Gaiman explains that the Nyx have had a connection with ponies since the time that history allows. And that they were ENTRUSTED to create the dreams of ponies.

Why dreams of ponies, specifically? And WHO, or WHAT were they entrusted by? Gaiman seems to imply that whoever or whatever the Nyx answer to in their line of work is probably older than the royal sisters, if their relationship with ponies goes back to the analysis of history. And surely, it couldn't have been the ToH, if ponies had only begun to discover it's existence and be guided/influenced by it around the era of Starswirl.

There's still a lot to explore about this topic, of course. Question is- will the comics continue to delve into such things, or will the series?

The only Nyx I'm familiar with is in Past Sins by Pen Stroke (& various sequels) over at Fimfiction.  I suspect most that, like myself, most fans haven't read the comics.  It is my understanding that the EQ moon is both livable & inhabited & that Luna/Nightmare Moon had many adventures there during her 1,000 year time out

Of course, the show hasn't had anything between Luna's exile & her return. The only things canon are that the capitol used to be in The Castle of the Two Sisters, during Luna's exile it was moved to Canterlot, and a lot of stuff was abandoned there, including The Elements of Harmony (thought to be broken) and some pretty dangerous books (hidden).

Past that, IMO it is wide open for Head Canons.

maybe you should familiarize yourself with the IDW comic Nyx, which are actually official Canon. The comics actually give glimpse of what happened between Luna's exile and her return. But,of course, much more still needs to be explained, especially about the Nyx who are responsible for Luna's learned abilities.

Hi, it seems that this discussion belongs more in Comics and Books, so it has been moved there.
