pegapony 193 September 30, 2017 Share September 30, 2017 I have a question about all the ponies names and how they sound to you. I´m not english speaking, I speak Swedish all day long here. So when it comes to the names of the ponies I must have some advice from you that speak English all day long and can relate to those name much easier. The pony names are the same over her, so you don´t translate them, yay they sound pretty cool in our ears. But if you translate the names, come on, that´s a different story. For instance take Pinkipie, whow, hold your horses, translate that straight to Swedish and I bet my frinds would beat me up if I said I liked the name of such a creature. And hold your hat : Flutter Shy.... I mean come on.... You just can´t translate THAT into other than silly sounding names localy. For many years ago on the radio (think it was G3 time) they had a competition, where people should guess if a name they said, bellonged to a MLP or a Porn star. Then two people called in to the show and the one with 3 ponys first correct won. Very Funny, I mean people not into MLPs had no clue. So ok for English speaking ponys this tread is maybe dumb and strainge, but for us other it may make sense ?
Snow Frostflame 3,568 September 30, 2017 Share September 30, 2017 Their names don't sound any better even if you do understand/speak English. To me they come off as typical girly horse names they came up with and reused throughout the generations. Though their names also reflect their personalities and character a bit. But yeah they sound as ridiculous to you as they do to us.
Once In A Blue Moon 896 September 30, 2017 Share September 30, 2017 (edited) I'm not sure that familiarity with the English language or English-speaking cultures* is that much more insightful. The naming 'traditions' of Equestria seem, to me at least, like that of another culture - with an emphasis on the purpose and interests of the person (as bestowed by the writers' advanced knowledge of the character.) That the names seem 'girly' I think relates more to the characters than it does to the naming convention. *which themselves have varying naming traditions, depending on what other cultures influenced them - you're going to have a lot more Spanish influence in the US than in the UK, whilst Canada will have more French influence even in areas other that Quebec.
