Why is Starlight Glimmer OP or overpowered in some episodes?

Why is Starlight Glimmer in some Op or overpowered in some episodes like she can make a spell with seemingly no effort at all she bend time if she tried too and yet somehow she can not even beat a half mole thing in season 7 episode 17 in My Little Pony: Friendship Is Magic.

The time travel spell was mostly clever use of preexisting infrastructure (the Map and Starswirl's spell) to do most of the work.  A lot of her other spells don't seem like they'd be particularly energy intensive; and being smart enough to put together new spells on the fly is a totally different skill than being able to fight.  Blasting with horn lasers doesn't seem to be very effective against large monsters (see Slice of Life for more examples), and that seems to be most of what unicorns do in a fight.

Actually, it was explained that she needed Star Swirl's scroll in conjunction with the Map for her time-travel spell (not exactly what I'd call "seemingly no effort at all").

 

Likewise, the "half mole thing in season 7 episode 17" explicitly had some kind of immunity to magic (even Superman has his Kryptonite, after all).
